AIBU unreasonable to be mildly irritated/ amused by the people who comment “congratulations again” on social media posts? Like, look at me, I’m in the inner circle and already knew this important information?!

OP posts:
tfu · 19/07/2026 13:00

I think a social media break may be a good thing for you if this sort of thing annoys you! Social media is mostly performative so just scroll on or stop using if it is irritating you

Cla7 · 19/07/2026 13:01

Well, if they’ve already said congrats in person and then they post congrats online, it looks like they might struggle with their short term memory. If they ignore the post then it’s why are they ignoring it. I think YABU and overthinking, they probably only think about congratulating the poster and not ‘I want to demonstrate something to Hackedoffinoldage ‘.

pinkyredrose · 19/07/2026 13:01

Congratulations on what?

WeatherOrNothing · 19/07/2026 13:02

atep away from SM op. To have this level of nitty gritty petty thoughts is just insane

SallyD00lally · 19/07/2026 13:03

Wouldn't enter my head to be even mildly irritated by this.

Imadeit · 19/07/2026 13:05

Nah I agree with you OP. Those people who post under a pregnancy announcement 'so glad the secret is finally out' make me cringe myself inside out 😂

Darragon · 19/07/2026 13:07

I don’t tend to do that but I can see why someone else might. Couldn’t get worked up about it.

NowIKnowHowToMakeHummus · 19/07/2026 13:12

Totally agree OP. Smug and exclusionary.

Sasha07 · 19/07/2026 13:15

Something I've never gave a second thought to, as the young'ens say, 'it's just not that deep.'

ofcolitas · 19/07/2026 13:19

Is it a second pregnancy? Perhaps thats what they mean when they say "congratulations again". Otherwise yes, it's very petty of them to make sure everyone knows they knew about the event before it was posted on facebook. I mean, they really don't need to congratulate them again if they already have.

But as others here have said, it's probably best to step away from social media if it erks you this much.

Turtles4543 · 19/07/2026 13:20

Yes I agree, you’ve got to know that they already knew

Krevlornswath · 19/07/2026 13:27

I couldn't care less personally. I don't usually even look at comments on posts most of the time, let alone scroll down. I can see how a person might view it all as a bit of deliberate flag to their proximity to the person but at the end of the day, if they found out before social media did then they obviously are closer to that person than someone who didn't anyway, so what does it matter.

I do think that there is a bit of a bizarre social media set of rules in existence with (some of) the chronically online, and certainly with influencers, whereby you have to be seen to be publicly supporting one another or it gets taken personally. It seems quite normal in that context to have already been told the news privately but still react publicly on a post in that way.

PeasandMozzarella · 19/07/2026 13:30

Take a much-needed digital detox, OP.

In fact, have one of those little lockable phone bags. I was at a stand-up comic gig last night, and we all had to put our phones into little locked phone bags that could only be re-opened on the way out by putting them on those things that remove security tags from clothes in shops. I suggest you get one.

plims · 19/07/2026 13:30

It appears you’re upset that someone got to know another person’s news before you did. Is it a shock that nobody could possibly tell everyone their news at the same time? As another poster said, it’s not that deep.

SeaAndSangria · 19/07/2026 13:34

Good grief
YABU
Step away from social media for a bit, "it's not that deep" as they say!

SeaAndSangria · 19/07/2026 13:34

Just noticed I'm not the first one to say "it's not that deep"
😁

Cluelessfirstimer · 19/07/2026 13:34

Social media is a show. People LOVE to put vague or suggestive comments and to show they are "in the know" or simply to get some attention.

"Here again" (while tagging themselves at a hospital)
You ok hun? DM
You've been through so much already
"Im so glad the secret is out of the bag!"

Etc etc...

I barely even notice those posts anymore. My brain just skips them.

Scroll on and enjoy your day.

redskyAtNigh · 19/07/2026 13:39

I suspect the people posting "congratulations again" feel that that's a better option than not posting anything, which might equally be scrutinised and wondered about. Which would be my preferred approach but then I don't care about social media or whether people are going to think I don't care that my close friend is pregnant (or whatever).

Posting just "congratulations" if you've already said "congratulations" is a bit odd.

itsgettingweird · 19/07/2026 13:42

You need to change your mindset.

Instead of irritation feel sorry for the people with so little self esteem they have to get it from SM by letting the world know they knew before them and making themselves feel important.

Personally I just smile and move on!

MonteStory · 19/07/2026 13:43

Oh my god yes. And I don’t agree that it’s a small thing - it’s representative of calculated exclusionary behaviour that some people revel in.

I had a colleague like this. Once me, her and another colleague who’d happened to meet up at the pub on the weekend (with a few others) were sitting in the staff room quietly working. A couple more staff, who didn’t go to the pub (not not invited, just didn’t live locally) came in and this woman IMMEDIATELY strikes up a conversation with me about ‘wasn’t that funny on Saturday when…’

I couldn’t believe she was so blatant. I mumbled agreement and left the room.

A year or so later I was on the receiving end when, again without any particular context or reason, says ‘oh Jane it’s going to thunder this weekend! It’ll be so loud in the caravan!’ ‘Jane’ looks akward and says ‘oh yes I saw that’ and tries to just get on with work. Colleague continues ‘it’s much louder in the caravan than in the house, will you look after me?’
I realised what she was doing and rolled my eyes at ‘Jane’ but she just kept going ‘what will we have for tea on Saturday Jane? Will Sarah and Carol bring some drinks?’ Jane was so uncomfortable to be very obviously talking about a little mini break I wasn’t invited to, she eventually said ‘let’s talk about this later’ and colleague apologised for talking about ‘our little holiday’ in front of me. Gave me the perfect opportunity to say “I couldn’t give a shiny shit, don’t stop being rude on my account”

AliceNotInChains · 19/07/2026 13:45

Or when someone posts big news on Facebook and someone comments “as you know from our call this morning I was so shocked to hear the news … “

fuck off

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 19/07/2026 13:47

Yes, really irritating.
There's someone on another site I use with nicknames, who makes a point of using the first names of her little clique, also annoying.

DogearedPaperbackWriter · 19/07/2026 13:52

There's a lot to be annoyed by on social media. This would rank extremely low on that list for me. I really don't think people are doing it to assert their superiority in some strange way—unless it's a specific person who is always trying to look special or 'in the know'. The average person? That's just how you phrase it when you've already congratulated someone for something but feel you ought to acknowledge it again.

Happyjoe · 19/07/2026 14:00

It's amazing what takes up people's brain space! I'd never had given this a thought tbh and cared even less.

MinnieCoops · 19/07/2026 14:04

Haha like the oh I’m so glad the secret is finally out! Weirdos.
