AIBU unreasonable to be mildly irritated/ amused by the people who comment “congratulations again” on social media posts? Like, look at me, I’m in the inner circle and already knew this important information?!

OP posts:

I’ve responded to news I’ve already known with “I’m so happy for you” or something that compounds what I’ve already said to them in private, but doesn’t make me look like a dick to people who have just found out. You don’t need to explicitly spell it out that you already knew.

I honestly think it's deeply weird that you're approaching this as 'Must not make those on the outer ring of X's life feel their exclusion, so must hide my previous insider knowledge of a key event like her pregnancy/anal fissure/ overseas transfer.'

I’m disabled so most of my world is online. And I’m a cantankerous, menopausal old grump. The internet isn’t just for the toxically positive. 🤷🏻‍♀️

then fair enough, only reasonable comment I have seen so far 😂

I also advise reddit, there are plenty of things to express your grump there too.

How would it be strange or rude to not respond to a sm post when you’ve already been told in person?

It wouldn’t be in the least bit rude
only to those who are always looking to be offended

Christ alive, surely you’d have to be pretty damn bitter to take offence so utterly harmless and trivial?

Poppycorn123 · 19/07/2026 16:45

Definitely smug. So happy I knew before all these other peasants vibe 🤣

rainbowunicorn · 19/07/2026 16:48

Good God. The things people on here get themselves offended about. 🙄

“Exclusion”? I think that’s over-egging the pudding somewhat!

People today seem to think they have a right to know the ins and outs, and if they don’t that somehow relegates their importance. I don’t expect to know that someone I worked with five years ago is pregnant. Don’t get me wrong, it’s lovely news and I’m happy for them but it doesn’t affect my life. But when people word their response to explicitly indicate that they already knew, it’s because they don’t want people to think that they didn’t already know. That would make them feel unimportant. So they are compelled to reply in such a way to make it clear that they are a big part of this news. (I believe the youngsters call this “main character energy”)

It just comes across as a bit pathetic. So if someone close to me announced news that I already knew, I’d either not reply at all, or reply in a way that didn’t make it clear I already knew, because I wouldn’t want to look like I was saying “Look at me, I’m special because I already knew and you plebs didn’t”. It’s nothing to do with upsetting anyone else, I just wouldn’t want to look like a self-obsessed dick.

Poppycorn123 · 19/07/2026 16:58

Yep MrsPapillon I would never say it, just react to the post and that's it..more than enough. There's just no need to be smug.

How the heck do you have such insight in to the motivations and thoughts of these “people” @MrsPapillon ?

It’s not “people” as much as “social media behaviour”. I don’t have to delve, it jumps out. Maybe it’s an age thing? My generation was raised to not draw attention to ourselves so it’s quite jarring when people act self-importantly or show-offy.

And I say “not people” because I know a number of people who are perfectly normal don’t behave like this in real life, but their SM is utterly cringeworthy.

Hankunamatata · 19/07/2026 17:07

Eh. You see a post of friend celebrating something. Of course you congratulate them again online, seems ride to me not to

VividDeer · 19/07/2026 17:14

I thought you mean it was their second marriage. That would sting a bit..
Otherwise move on

You aren’t surrounded by pleasant people if you seem to have so many show-offs self obsessed people in your friendship group.

How old are you?

Heronwatcher · 19/07/2026 17:21

On a scale of “things that annoy me” I think this is probably around number 3672.

I also suspect it’s because people want to acknowledge it on social media but don’t know how to do so without looking batshit when the person being congratulated knows that they already knew. It’s a weird social media quirk that no one quite knows how to deal with. If people don’t say this then it looks like the person in question has e.g announced their pregnancy/ house move/ new job to their own mother on social media!

I absolutely don’t read this as a statement of superiority. I think that’s a bit paranoid.

Who said they were my friends? The main culprits are my cousin’s partner, the DD of a close friend, an ex-colleague, and the mother of one of DS’s old school friends. I’m in my 50s.

Do people genuinely have that much free time on their hand that they make note and become offended if someone knew something they didn't? WHY would you even care?

Are we back to accuse people of being "clique" because people get miffed if they dont' feel that they have got the top status with everyone?

No wonder we have so many MIL from hell around 😂

Yup.

You talked as though this was many “people” who were self absorbed and highly sensitive to take offence. Indicating multiple people that you knew fairly well to have this conclusion of them

I always just do a little inward eye roll. Yes, it’s a bit pathetic (so much on SM is). Ignore the VIPs who are telling you that you’re wrong to even notice it. They’re obviously the types in question who MUST show their superiority at having heard previously that Emily from behind the bar in The Dog & Duck is with child. God forbid anyone was labouring under the misapprehension that they too had just discovered this groundbreaking news on facebook too.

Or maybe they just thought that it seemed weird to say congratulations again, if they already said it?

For those of you properly pissed off at this, you might benefit from considering that it’s refreshing to focus on assuming positive intent.

Approaching interactions with grace rather than suspicion absolutely lowers stress and fosters a much more positive life to inhabit.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 19/07/2026 17:33

Yabu. It is not that deep.
