AIBU to feel mildly irritated by 'congratulations again' comments online?

AIBU unreasonable to be mildly irritated/ amused by the people who comment “congratulations again” on social media posts? Like, look at me, I’m in the inner circle and already knew this important information?!

OP posts:

Oh dear @MrsPapillon you really do have a bleak view of society. No doubt built on the views and experiences of those around you. What a depressing way to live. To feel like you have to make it very clear to your Facebook friends that you don’t know news for fear that they will see you as self obsessed and show offy. You’re a woman in her fifties… have more self confidence in yourself!

On the contrary my dear @Butnotreally1, I’d counter that it’s the people who feel the need to advertise that they’re in the inner circle like your good self who are the ones who lack confidence, getting a silly ego boost from other people seeing that they knew first. Insanity.

JuneJuneHannah · Yesterday 12:19

I know exactly what you mean OP. There’s always that one desperate to make sure everyone knows they knew first, it’s so silly.

And for those saying stop using SM, people do irritating things in Tesco. Should I just stop doing food shops? Hmm

Oh dear. Such a bleak view of much and so many in“Society”. Depressing 💐

Butnotreally1 · Yesterday 14:08

Isn’t it sad that we now live in such a sad, pathetic vacuous society

do you share this view with your children @MrsPapillon ?

TB23 · Yesterday 14:26

So I don't get this at all. Comments are for the person making the original post, and if that person has already told the person commenting in some way, why would they pretend they don't know? I don't even read other people's comments.

Because (thankfully a minority) of some people seem to think that it’s show offy and self absorbed 😕

lebin · Yesterday 14:40

This grates on me too 😂 and when someone announces a pregnancy and you get a comment like “yay! the news is finally out!”

MajorProcrastination · Yesterday 14:44

Congratulations! I have honestly never thought about this in my life.

I gave a friend a card and bunch of flowers a couple of weeks ago at her house because she graduated with a degree in her 30s with 3 kids and has a fab new career ahead of her. I also clicked like on her photos this week which were of the graduation ceremony that took place this week and typed something positive which could easily have been "congrats again".

Should I now be worrying that some mumsnet misery is bitching about me for being performative just for being positive towards my friend?!

This one isn't anywhere near as irritating as "DM me hun" after checking in at hospital. or "they're all snakes out there" or whatever cryptic drama some people put out there. But saying congratulations online as well as in person takes seconds and isn't that deep and perhaps it's time for you to touch some grass and congratulate the people you like on positive milestones in their lives.

Congratulations again.

Morepositivemum · Yesterday 14:47

do you mean commenting on a post or starting a whole new post? I will comment congratulations again on a post because I like the person to know I’m happy for them even though I may have said it in person or by text. Just extra congratulations really! I agree you need to grab a book/ magazine or take a break from sm

You need to change your mindset.

Instead of irritation feel sorry for the people with so little self esteem they have to get it from SM by letting the world know they knew before them and making themselves feel important.

Personally I just smile and move on!

I think you need to change your mindset.

Instead of thinking the worst of people and assuming horrible, negative traits about them based on two to three words, scroll by. Or even better, assume they are genuinely delighted.

Yes. You and I share a similar world view.

And I am bloody thankful I have this view rather than the likes of @itsgettingweird and @MrsPapillon

JuneJuneHannah · Yesterday 15:12

I think people are taking this a bit too seriously. I’m sure OP eye rolls a bit internally then moves on with her day. She’s not spitting feathers.

BuildbyNumbere · Yesterday 15:15

Doesn’t really irritate me, but yes, they need everyone to know that they already knew!!

Maisey1991 · Yesterday 16:03

Honestly get a hobby if you are bothered by things like this 😩😩😩

Eh, she started a thread on the internet about it. That's not exactly the action of someone 'moving on with her day'.

TiredSENMummy · Yesterday 16:06

"Finally, the cat's out of the bag"
("I already knew this news, peasants")

Yeah it bugs me, but loads of things about SM do.
My favourite is when a mother is wishing her child happy birthday and it's 37 photos of the mother taking a selfie, with the kid just about viewable in the frame 🙄🤣

People start threads about all kinds of mundane things like whether you keep chocolate in the fridge or cupboard, or which way you wipe your arse. It doesn’t make it important, it’s just passing the time of day. Being mildly irritated by something doesn’t make you a nasty old bitch who has a horrible view of the world. There will be things that annoy you that I wouldn’t even notice too. It’s not a big deal! Lighten up.

I think they're demented too.

I mean, it seems as if a significant minority people on here have never actually met another person, or, if they did, they didn't actually talk to them.

incognito1991 · Yesterday 16:59

It’s the pregnancy announcement comments with ‘finally glad the secrets out’ like shut up it’s not about you 🤣

You see I’d read that… and if I thought anything (unlikely) I would think probably from a sister, bestie or close family and I’d just think “oh I remember how difficult keeping my sister’s pregnancy to myself for 13 weeks.,, I was ready to explode with the news’s, I guess that is how they feel”.

What I wouldn’t think is… show off!!!

aWeeCornishPastie · Yesterday 17:48

@Backtobroc🤣 quite

JoBrandsCleaner · Yesterday 18:15

A bit maybe like, ‘I knew this already!’
It’s a bit like, a friend of mine who I’ve just (on purpose) lost touch with and now keep thinking of all the pita things she said and did. One of them was years ago when my 10 year old was telling her I was pregnant all excited, she said to her, ‘I know, I’ve known for months’ 🙄 I only hadn’t told my daughter because we’d lost the one before

PansyZer · Yesterday 18:22

Lol, I actually know exactly what you mean OP. YANBU.

I know a few people like this. Any announcement they absolutely fall all over themselves to somehow publicly cram in that they knew the news already. It's so bizarre as it's rarely something you'd be impressed by them knowing. It's like this weird deep-seated desire to seem more connected and in the know than others. Probably some kind of social evolutionary thing about trying to remain in the social group!

If they already said congrats privately there's no real need to do it again... if they want to do it again, just say it. But there's a very noticeable element to people needing to ensure in a short response they emphasise that they already knew.

I think people saying you're being a bit nuts probably haven't come across people like this!

Totally agree OP. Smug and exclusionary.

Same. Wankers.

eastegg · Yesterday 22:43

Fascinating thread, how these questions divide MNers!

I’m with @MrsPapillon et al. You know the behaviour when you see it. It’s also obvious that calling it out will attract accusations of overthinking, being weird, bitter, easily offended or whatever. Probably by the people who are doing it in the first place!

I’m an overthinker and proud of it. Or as I like to call it, a thinker 😁.
