AIBU pet sitting

First time posting so please be gentle with me!

I have some neighbours who live two streets over in a small ish, modern housing estate. We got to know them a few years ago as their twin girls are slightly younger than my daughter (she's now 10 and they are 9). I also have a 16 year old son.

We've become close friends, gone on days out etc and we talk most days. She's had a rough year with both of her in laws dying and so I've tried to be there for her.

I've also been having a rough few months, I've been having investigations for cancer and as part of my treatment I've just been put into chemical menopause. I only work part time but I'm exhausted, I hate taking time off sick so I've been going to work but I've shared with her how exhausted I've been and how stressed I am.

Her and her husband both work in education and told me a couple of weeks ago they were taking their kids out of school early to go on holiday as their holidays don't line up this year. I was shocked as they do still have the majority of the holidays all together as a family.

Several years ago they asked my son to look after their animals when they went away for a couple of days. He was 13 and readily agreed for the money. The problem is they have a lot of animals. 5 cats, 4 rabbits and a lizard, we have none. Over the years they've continued to ask and because my son can be a bit flakey and reluctant to do it it's ended up with my daughter and me doing it. She loves if but she's a child so it ends up her saying hello to them all and me actually feeding them.

I suspected when she told me about the holiday she was expecting me to ask about the animals but I didn't. Yesterday she asked me outright if I would look after them. She said if I didn't want to she had talked to both my kids and they'd agreed to do it (I'm not sure if that's true and my daughter is only 10 so of course she'd say yes). I asked for how long expecting a week tops, but they're going away for 16 days! She usually expects them to be fed morning and evening

I immediately said that I wasn't sure, there would be some days I couldn't cover because we had end of term school events and wouldn't always be back that early, especially once we've done bedtime.

She always seems to think it "takes 5 minutes" but in reality it takes ages. The cats live outside when they're away and don't seem to like that so I have to stop them going in the house or chase them out of they get past me. She doesn't want them in the house in case they bring back mice etc. I'm absolutely on my arse at the moment and I've taken a few days off just to try and keep going this week which she knows.

When I told her there were days I couldn't do her response was on those days just feed them morning or evening. I pushed back a bit and said there were definitely several days I couldn't do, is there anyone else she could ask. I explained it was too much for me along with our own family stuff and the time they were away was so long. I eventually grew some kind of spine and said I'd do a week but not the whole lots. She seemed to be annoyed but eventually she's sorted out a rota of her parents and her direct neighbours to cover the first week with me doing the rest. She kept saying that my kids had agreed weeks ago but they're kids and I'm also not sure this is true.

I messaged her earlier asking if she was excited for her holiday and she replied they went able to got till Monday now as her parents aren't back from their break until then and she has no one for the animals. I really felt like she was wanting me to offer but I didn't, but now I feel terrible.

The thing is me and dh have no family anymore and no help. One of the reasons we wouldn't get a pet is that we wouldn't be able to afford someone to look after them when we went away. She has always had multiple family members do their childcare and we've always done pet care for her. She's my really good friend but I'm starting to wonder if I'm just in her life as a cheap pet sitter. She will usually bring me back a present but obviously she's saving a lot on getting an actual pet sitter in. But then I feel really guilty and feel like I should do whatever to help. I don't know if I'm just being jealous because they have a lot more than we do and there's no way I can afford a holiday, let alone to go for so long.

So AIBU for not wanting to pet sit for over two weeks?

That's way too much of a commitment. Too many pets. Too much for a young lad to look after. (AND for you!)

Tell her to get a proper/professional sitter! You shouldn't have said yes to one week really, but you can always change your mind. Stop letting her boss you about!

.

outerspacepotato · 18/07/2026 19:28

Have you cleared pet sitting this many animals with your docs? I don't know if you're on anything that could suppress your immune system, but that might be a no can do for you currently.

I hope your tests come back clear.

ShetlandishMum · 18/07/2026 19:29

No!
I would tell her no.
Your children can't commit to it and you don't want to do it.
She is way out of line.

EmpressaurusKitty · 18/07/2026 19:31

She’s being completely U.

If I didn’t have a reciprocal arrangement with my neighbour I’d pay for an adult pet sitter.

mondaytosunday · 18/07/2026 19:31

Wow she doesn’t let the cats in? Right there I couldn’t do it because of how she’s treating her animals!
I either get Trustedhousesitters.com though now my dogs have padded away and I’ve just got the cats a lad up the road comes twice a day. She needs to take care of her pets properly.

HappiestSleeping · 18/07/2026 19:36

Also, if you are accepting any money for doing this, it becomes a commercial entity and you need insurance. She sounds exactly like the sort of person that would have you in court if anything went wrong even though you were trying to help her out.

PrettyLittleRose · 18/07/2026 19:37

What @HappiestSleeping said!

PinkyFlamingo · 18/07/2026 19:42

She needs to actually pay and put the cats in a cattery. She's expecting far far too much.

jellyfish798 · 18/07/2026 19:50

She's expecting way too much. Having that many animals with v different needs she shouldn't be relying on kids! I can't understand her. I am literally planning my pet sitting which I'll need next year when I get married/honeymoon. Responsible owners need to be organised and respect ppl's right to say no. By now, she should have built up a working relationship with one, maybe even 2 or 3 professional pet sitters so that she has plenty of cover. They're not your pets and you have a lot on - don't feel bad for her lack of planning xx

SunnyRedSnail · 18/07/2026 21:44

She is taking the p*ss!!

You cannot ask a 10 year old to take on such a responsibility! She should have asked you, and not your kids!!

My 15 year old looks after our neighbours pets when they're away. They pay him VERY well as they understand how demanding pets are, plus its also morning and night, so if we are busy we need to make sure the pets are sorted!!

MyPerkyGoldFish · 18/07/2026 22:06

Thanks it's nice to hear other opinions. I think the critical voice inside my head says I'm being mean to think this and that I should just do it because she's asked. Obviously I'm terrible at saying no.

Just out of interest, how much do people think is reasonable to pay for this? She's previously given my son/me £30 and a bar of chocolate for looking after them for a week. I've no idea what these things cost as never had pets as an adult and although we had a cat as a child we could never afford to go on holiday

I think I'll do the week this time as I've said I will but I definitely will be trying to distance myself a bit from it.

It's also the worry, last time we did it (a week) one of her cats wandered off and didn't come back for 5 days. I really worried that it was my fault.

I pay the catsitter £30 a day... just saying.

When I last used a paid cat sitter it was £10 per half hour visit.

Hibernatingsloth · 18/07/2026 22:42

£30 and a bar of chocolate to look after 5 cats, 4 rabbits and lizards for a week???

OP, I haven't boarded my cats for nearly a decade, but when I did it cost around £16 a day for 2 cats...a DECADE ago!!!

You're being used, OP, she's definitely taking advantage.
And as for 5 cats being locked out of the house for the duration of her fortnight's holiday so they don't bring wildlife inside.. how completely irresponsible and unfair to the cats!
What if one was run over/disappeared while she was away???

Squirrelintree · 18/07/2026 22:56

She should pay a professional pet sitter, especially with that many animals with different needs. Our catsitter charges about £22 for two half hour visits a day and this is a cost that is factored into holidays.

Glidinglikeaswan · 18/07/2026 23:05

£15 per visit for three cats and two sheep here. Probably more for so many animals. And of course her cat wandered off, it was locked out of its home - that's appalling treatment. Most people would leave the cats locked in the house with litter trays (more work for pet sitter...)

Summersongroses · 18/07/2026 23:15

I pay £13 a visit for my 1 cat so it is £26 per day. Plus I always leave flowers or a bottle of wine in addition (from the cat) to say thanks. Your friend is incredibly cheeky in my opinion and you shouldn’t ever be afraid to say it’s too much for you.

My son gets paid £3 a day to let the pet out in the morning and to bed at night but we are next door so no travel time and it takes 2 minutes as the food/water is already sorted. So £21 for 28 minutes work.

They should be paying you £10 a day with that many animals.

hattie43 · 19/07/2026 07:49

Sorry that was me who clicked YABU when it should have been YANBU . Friend needs to pay for a pet sitter . She’s asking too much . I bet she asked your kids knowing they’d find it difficult to turn her down , otherwise why not ask you to begin with . 16 days is a long time .

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 19/07/2026 08:03

I can't get over locking the poor cats out for over 2 weeks. What if there was a storm or awful weather? What if they wandered off or got ill or hit by a car?
She's irresponsible and a terrible friend expecting that for £30.

Say no. I think she's super cheap and not a great pet owner.

The lizard will also need special care and are the rabbits shut in cages or just out too?

Moonnstarz · 19/07/2026 08:48

So many irresponsible pet owners on here. Surely when you book a holiday you then immediately arrange proper care for your pets. It is cheeky to expect neighbours to do it for a week, let alone 16 days!
If they couldn't go away when they wanted that is on them.

DahliaDelights · 19/07/2026 12:14

One thing you ABSOLUTELY must do is to tell her directly that she is not to ask your children to petsit again ever, until they move out and arw adults. Your kids aren't her petsitters, they are children, they aren't old enough to make a commitment to pet sit. She is unreasonable to ask them and thats the end of it. She is not to do it again at all.

Get mad, get angry, get annoyed. This woman is taking advantage of you and your children, then she is using your own guilt into manipulating you to do what she wants. You should be the angry one, not her.

Liverpool52 · 19/07/2026 12:34

Is it me or has there been a rise in recent years of cheeky fuckers who get pets but aren't willing to accept the full cost of having pets. Great if you have a friendly neighbour who can feed/sit etc but the default should be you expect to pay.

Tamtim · 19/07/2026 12:42

You’ve told her you’re exhausted, yet she’s asked you anyway. You’re the cheap and easy option for her with no thought towards you and your current situation. A ten year old cannot agree to look after animals. Your 16 year old could but he’s not reliable. She needs to have a better solution that doesn’t negatively impact you.

Shinyandnew1 · 19/07/2026 13:02

I paid a friend’s daughter to come in twice a day for a week last year and paid £150.

She shouldn’t be talking about this with your children and telling you they e agreed. £30 is crap as well. I’d have said it was too much and I couldn’t do it at all.
