I'm sick to death already of seeing Andy Burnham and hearing his voice. And he isnt even PM yet. Come back Keir Starmer. All is forgiven. I dont know how I'm going to suffer 3 or four more years of him in charge. Playing the part of the working class hero who is going to save the country. Give me strength.

Burnham wouldn’t have been my choice for PM but I think the broad brush outline of his direction for the government sounds good. He hasn’t said any real policies yet and I don’t think he should until Monday. If there had been a competitive election then yes, but just taking over from Starmer I think talking about what he’s going to do before he’s PM would be humiliating for Starmer. I think having this number 10 north in Manchester sounds ridiculous, but the idea of the department is good, but it will have to be in London there’s no time or money to move everyone. I’m going to be optimistic until he proves me wrong.

I think mn can be pro higher taxes but the road has run out on that.

People who've worked with him in Manchester speak highly of his enthusiasm and energy. He deserves to be given a chance but that's something the right-wing press just will not do. The Daily Mail will attack any Labour PM on a daily basis and so many people believe everything they read in it.

I liked Keir Starmer too and I'm not crazy about the witch-hunt from the press that drove him out. He made some errors but did a lot of good stuff too, .. and remember Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage baying for us to go to war with Iran? KS handled Trump intelligently and kept us out of that disaster but got no credit for it.

He's well respected in Europe and I'd like to see AB offering KS a job as Foreign Secretary - that would be a great move but I think it's unlikely unfortunately.

They may have run out of road on most taxes, but confiscation of your life savings is next- or as the Left calls them: wealth taxes.

I don't think I mind him as a person but it feels like a massive bait and switch.

I don't see why anyone more to the centre would ever feel confident voting Labour with someone like Blair or Starmer in charge again, knowing that a coup could simply remove them and then a different branch of the Labour party would then be in charge. All that work to make Labour more electable wasted.

I know people further to the left won't believe this because they think they don't need to care about the centre, just persuade even more people further to the left of them to vote Labour, but that's really not what it takes to win elections in the UK.

This all feels like vanity and greed for glory. If AB really cared about the country and respected the electorate could he not have been happy to just to join the cabinet and join in?

I've noticed a concerted campaign in the media trying to terrify people with the prospect of property taxes.

I'm not too upset at the prospect of wealthy people being made to pay tax at the rate of 2% on their assets over 10 million pounds. (Ie the wealth tax only kicks in after the first 10 million)

Well I like him. But not quite sure what there isn’t to like yet given he hasn’t announced any policies.

He is catholic state school educated, and went to Cambridge. His two brothers are headteachers and he worked as a journalist for four years before going into politics as a researcher. So he did not go straight into politics.

Also that’s Andy Burnham’s actual accent, he’s not trying to copy Ringo Star.

Burnham has had one job outside politics - that was for 3 years after graduating (between 1991-1994) where was employed by a publishing company working on one of their trade magazines.

In 1994 he moved into politics (aged 24) and started by working as a researcher for Tessa Jowell. He's been in politics ever since.
