I'm sick to death already of seeing Andy Burnham and hearing his voice. And he isnt even PM yet. Come back Keir Starmer. All is forgiven. I dont know how I'm going to suffer 3 or four more years of him in charge. Playing the part of the working class hero who is going to save the country. Give me strength.

He is ideologically blind. He has set out his stall with his divisive intro. His objective is to snare as much money from the great wealth transfer as he can.

My in laws in Germany are always shocked by our taxes as they always thought the UK was a low tax country but when they compare they are higher.

The snobbery and prejudice on here towards those with a northern accent is shocking. Get off your high horses and take the time to actually listen to the man instead of judging his accent. I’d imagine Andy Burnham knows he is no longer working class but he does know the struggle to succeed faced by those from disadvantaged backgrounds because he wasn’t brought up with a silver spoon hanging from his mouth. He’s advocating for a fairer housing market - for those whose parents aren’t able to hand them a big fat deposit, lowering bills by putting an end to profiteering from our natural resources, improving social care and making education work for all - not just academic study which isn’t a path for everyone. Argue against those policies if you will but stop with your clear prejudice and snobbery towards those of northern origin.

Alternative viewpoint - Starmer literally paid zero attention to his manifesto so no real expectations that this Mayor one day, MP the next & Prime Minister the day after (with zero objections from Labour stalwarts, despite previously being turned down twice as Leader of the Labour party) should.

With expectations that sky high before he is even officially PM, I have to say I feel sorry for him when he inevitably fails to deliver and the tide turns…

And this is why we no longer have a PM that lasts more than a couple of years no matter the quality of the job they do. As soon as anyone takes the position they are attacked from all sides kind of like a lot of positions in authority - coaches of national teams for example. It’s absolutely ridiculous and if we want to succeed as a country we need to give time and a chance for success. But people are dicks these days and are incapable of that apparently.

That’s exactly what I mean but sadly a lot people have the attention span or a goldfish and the critical faculties of a 5 year old.

We’ve become what Italy used to be. Unstable. Chopping and changing leaders. It’s something we used to take the piss out of them for. Now that’s us, a fundamentally unserious country.

Lets be honest he wouldnt have got within an inch of downing street had it been a GE. He wants to take us back to the dark grim days of the far left party we had in the 70s and very few of us want that. If he actually took notice of the local elections he would see what people wanted and it isnt a far left government.

I’ve lived in both. You have a far better quality of life in the North on a similar or lower income to someone in the South. There is so much bullshit about how Southerners earn much more. A select group of people working in the City earn a lot more. Everyone else does not. I saw a civil service job advertised for my professional qualification recently. £76k in London, £74k outside London. Do you really think £2k before tax covers the additional cost of living? In the area of Essex that I live there is no outer London weighting so a teacher would be on exactly the same pay grade as someone in the North. But the houses are 40-50% more than suburb of the large Northern city that I grew up in (and that’s expensive compared to some other parts of the North or the Midlands).

I think you'll find it was the young men she sent out there (at a time when she badly needed to boost her popularity) who did the standing up. 1000 of whom were injured or lost their lives. The median age was 22. Three of those killed were just 17 years old.
You might argue the conflict was necessary. But to frame it as an act of bravery on behalf of a woman who had neglected to prevent its escalation, failed to monitor the situation and protect the islanders at an earlier stage, and then sent young men to die to further her image as strong leader, and distract us from her failings with jingoism, is reductive, to say the least.

He's gonna take us back to the Winter of Discontent; Streets full of rubbish; rubbish services since everyone was on strike; massive unemployment, for those of us old enough to remember.

Won't be sorry to see the end of Never Here Keir or Rachel Thieves trying to mug pensioners. Good riddance!

That isn't snobbery; it's about competence and priorities.

If your goal is a fairer housing market, then every major development backed by public money should be delivering affordable and social housing. Too many haven't, and Manchester is still well short of the number of affordable homes it needs.

People are entitled to question whether taxpayers got the best value from those investments and whether stronger conditions should have been attached to the funding.

By all means defend his policies if you think they've worked, but don't dismiss legitimate criticism as prejudice. The debate should be about results (how contract are awarded) not accents.

I don't think its the socialists on MN who are laying into Burnham.

I think he's going to a breath of fresh air.
He's a fantastic communicator, aware of the concerns of the country and well aware of the struggles ahead.
He has a plan.
