I'm sick to death already of seeing Andy Burnham and hearing his voice. And he isnt even PM yet. Come back Keir Starmer. All is forgiven. I dont know how I'm going to suffer 3 or four more years of him in charge. Playing the part of the working class hero who is going to save the country. Give me strength.

I was actually interested in your opinion, not just a soundbite.
I was interested in what you consider to be socialism, whether you're thinking of democratic socialism, or a social democracy (the most likely form it would take in the UK) or if you have extreme forms in mind like in communist countries?
And what makes you frightened of the sort of socialism that we could perhaps have in the UK, which would be the type we see in countries like Sweden?

Yes - he has said that the 80’s were where it all went wrong and suggested we should look to the 70’s. Sorry if I didn’t make it clear. He’s blaming thatcher while looking at the 70’s with rose tinted glasses

Give the bloke a chance FFS. We really need some fresh ideas in politics. Burnham might well be the right man for the job. He’s done a great job in Manchester.

Margaret Thatcher was elected at the end of the seventies and she pretty much called the shots when Argentina tried their hand.

I just wanted Starmer to be left in peace to do the job he was elected to do. After the revolving door of Tory PMs I really don't understand why Labour have changed their leader like this, and to someone who wasn't even an MP. I'd understand it if we were in an election year and Starmer's ratings were poor, but we weren't. I really judge the disloyalty of the people who ousted him.

However, there also seems to be a habit of building someone up only to smack them down again. So let's give him a chance and look at the good.

rural/urban
service/industry
poor public transport/good public transport
etc

if you just the country in two you won’t fix anything. And you certainly won’t fix anything by just making Manchester London version 2

I personally think, give him a chance before deciding. For reference, I am a high earner who has always voted Tory (I like my local MP). All the politicians seem awful at the minute, so why not…

Did it really go wrong? She did give opportunities to people. Maybe a little misguided. Should have followed up with more social housing available after people were able to buy. But there must be a lot of people that have become really better off in the 80s.
We can’t predict what happens in the future, wars etc. inflation is always there because that is life. If your economy grows then there is inflation.
Property booms hurt everyone. I lived in a country that is was so bad that I had to move to another one to be able to buy a house and commute to back to the country I can’t afford to live in to work.
However, the country I work in gives automatic pay rises when inflation starts getting too high. Now the companies here aren’t happy, it is a legal obligation.

Burnham has said that he may ‘need to ask us for a little bit more’, which sounds like paying more tax will be optional. 🙄

So clearly the country has iffy finances. If tax needs to go up it’s because we’re currently not living within our means.

He’s also declared his intention to set up a No 10 office in Manchester. He’ll commute weekly, as no doubt will a lot of No 10 staff. Whilst in Manchester they’ll need to be given board & lodging if the need to stay away from home (London) is one imposed by the employer. Or he’ll hire people in both locations, which saves on fares & breakfast but doubles the wages bill.

Clearly I’m not PM material (nor indeed MP material) because I can’t make that add up.

If you need to raise more in tax to pay for what you’re already doing, why on earth would you add expenditure of multi millions more per year on an identikit office in the midlands*??

*Manchester is not ‘the north’. Look at a map. 🙄

Grow up OP. People like you are the reason we’re no longer a serious country, and change prime ministers like we’re changing our underwear.

I shudder to think what it's going to mean to those of us in Scotland. We hit the higher tax rate band a bit lower than those in the rest of the UK and we also pay an extra 2 per cent. (I got my state pension last month and that's been enough to push me into the higher rate here. I know - very much a first-world problem.)

Can we not stop the constant criticism of politicians.

The problem here is we haven’t voted for him. We haven’t been able to listen to his agenda and make a decision on whether we want him as prime minister or not. I also appreciate the Tories tried this and look where that went….
