To be sick to death of Andy Burnham already

I'm sick to death already of seeing Andy Burnham and hearing his voice. And he isnt even PM yet. Come back Keir Starmer. All is forgiven. I dont know how I'm going to suffer 3 or four more years of him in charge. Playing the part of the working class hero who is going to save the country. Give me strength.

It really doesn’t. It’s consistently towards the bottom end of the academic rankings and you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks it’s a great college. It’s mostly fishing in the clearing pool. It’s exactly the sort of place you’d expect Burnham to scrape into.

😂😂😂😂😂😂
should let everyone know about this so even the most northern state educated thickoid can have an Oxbridge education on their CV

what you are sneering at us it’s use of contextual offers. And the horrors, a foundation year for applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds who ‘only’ achieved BBB

Isn't Fitz part of Cambridge though? I'm working class and went to the town comp, so I'm clearly not going to be very knowledgeable or bright, so I'm not sure.... Wink

Are you northern too though? I think these are the scraping the barrel entry requirements for Fitz

Sesma · 18/07/2026 19:33

Why does he go on about the 70s, he was just a child.

Emeraldforest · 18/07/2026 19:38

I'm a Southerner, not remotely well off, but delighted he wants more power for the North. Maybe we can shrink the North/South divide.

The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people's money.

That superficially attractive saying was Margaret Thatcher’s, whose policies really have not stood the test of time. You might recall Churchill’s observation that the inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings.

Either way, this is a capitalist country. Mutual systems of healthcare, education and so on do not change that. The top 1% own over 70% of wealth and that % of wealth is increasing, so you need have no fear of the dreaded socialism.

Thedogscollar · 18/07/2026 19:50

Andy Burnham has a proven track record in an executive roll. His time as Manchester mayor saw him responsible for the first London style franchised bus/tram network outside London.

He initiated a scheme for helping the homeless in Manchester with A bed every night scheme.
He was responsible for the devolution of health and social care budget to Greater Manchester. He spoke up for his region during the covid period gaining extra funding. Devolution of government is progressive giving more power to regions/cities.

He has experience of government after serving as both a Health Secretary and Shadow Home Secretary under a Labour government. He has been out of Westminster for a few years but he most definitely has experience to be our next PM.

Andy Burnham is an experienced politician with a vision for a fairer GB benefitting all. His plain speaking appeals to the voters who are fed up of the usual politics.

Being rude about his accent and where he attended university is water off a ducks back to him. He's here to do a job and I think he will do well. He most definitely has a plan which we will hear more about next week.

Gosh. Not heard that before. Except when the poster I was talking to said it word for word.

I am a bit Northern. 😱 I was born and raised in THE NORTH, but now live in the midlands. (Since late 1990s.) Still have a bit of a Yorkshire accent!

RobinStrike · 18/07/2026 19:51

Gloriia · 18/07/2026 19:17

No-one cares that he's Northern. It's his slimy way of getting in and his massive ego that is the issue.

If no one cares he’s northern why all the insults about his accent and claiming it’s fake? NOt part of the Eton and Oxford moneyed set like Cameron and Johnson and Osborne ? He is what he claims, a professional politician who comes from outside Wigan, with strong links to Blunkett . I agree he has a massive ego but he couldn’t have got to where he is if the PLP hadn’t wanted him. Now we just have to see what he can do.

Especially with the poor man's Ringo Starr accent. What a bloody bore. I thought Starmer would take some beating in that department.

Crikey

Myli1 · 18/07/2026 20:04

I like Andy. I thought he served us well in Manchester and he will be missed. I hope he can do as well for us as PM.

JudyBlumesBlubber · 18/07/2026 20:13

I know someone who grew up beside Burnham. It was the nicest street in a lovely large village near Warrington, the son of middle class parents. He went to great schools and then Cambridge. Andy has never had a job outside politics.

So this “man of the people” lark is a joke. He has never had to wait on a freezing bus for a shift at Greg’s or sit in an office being bullied by a rubbish manager for being 10 mins late dropping the kids to school.

But hey he s going to prioritise the North (Manchester) over the South, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so that’s all okay.

They’ll be gone from power in 2 years time. Hopefully he can’t do damage before then.

RobinStrike · 18/07/2026 20:20

@LuckyHazelFoxit’s not actually a Liverpool accent, it’s a Wool(lyback) accent as that’s where he grew up. As I said earlier it’s the standard accent anyone in the Wigan area in any professional or other job would have.
@JudyBlumesBlubberi don’t know he’s ever claimed to be anything he isn’t. He just understands local people and wants to represent them. I am sceptical he can do even half of what he says, but surely trying and achieving some of it is better than nothing? These Labour MPs are a new intake and less willing to follow the PM. They wanted him so we have to hope they will pass some decent legislation under him.

DollydaydreamTheThird · 18/07/2026 20:22

I fear the fact he is a northerner is more of a problem for most of you given that he isn't even in power yet, hasn't selected a cabinet and hasn't given much details about his policy yet apart from what he said in the speech on Friday. I think it is the media who are jumping all over this to be honest but it makes a change from things being all about right wing narcissistic dickheads like Farage and Trump. Labour is exciting again, who would have thought? 😂

He has little time and even less money. If he sticks to the current manifesto he’s finished. If he deviates too far from the current manifesto he’s finished. His time in office will be mostly spent in crisis management and trying to fend off political and personal attacks from all sides. I’m sure there will be some scandals along the way. The scope of his ambitions are laughable given the circumstances in which he finds himself. He might be able to get something done in one policy area and he probably needs to focus on what this will be. He’ll be nothing more than a footnote in history.

A coup is exactly what it is.

Military involvement - I must have missed that. Illegal seizure of power again I must have missed that. Or do you not know what the term means? Let me think…

Greenleavesandsunshine · 18/07/2026 20:36

Some of the rampant snobbery - what college at Cambridge? He has an accent? He was a councillor for where? On this thread is a reminder of how much the U.K. is still mired and dragged down by ignorant classism. Added, to that the people making these simplistic, snobbish claims have zero understanding of the U.K. constitution.
No wonder the country is in a mess when people make voting decisions on accent, ill conceived understanding of the constitution and outdated opinions on Cambridge colleges.

The Guardian is happy to use the term in a headline and several times in the article, about Labour leaders being deposed. Perhaps you’d better tell their reporters, subs and Editor how ignorant they are.

I think we all know what ‘coup’ means in the context. You’re not scoring any points here.

‘An hour of abuse’: Jeremy Corbyn on Labour coups, and whether he feels sorry for Starmer

Oh the Guardian said it - the horror! I must be wrong then if The Guardian said it.
ffs I am capable of understanding the term and making a judgement based on my own considerations not on what THE GUARDIAN said.
They are using the term in a hyperbolic way, not as a specific political term. Really, do you people need everything explaining really slowly?

Neither illegality nor military involvement are prerequisites for a coup as used in common parlance. For example, we often talk about boardroom coups in companies. Never seen a chief exec removed by marines.
