Naive to protect the Good Friday Agreement?

the poster said “in some respects”. Not sure why you think that means with respect to the GFA.

An woman thinking that leaving the ECHR is a good idea is no friend of women.

And I am darkly laughing at somebody praising the situation in India. Which has a hideous record of rape and sexual assault and is a country where many women are no longer safe.

Why does Irish peace have to allow foreigners to come here?

DH got a job. I followed.

So you came here as a jobless immigrant and now you want to stop other people coming into the country. The worst kind of hypocrite. I am embarrassed for you. Why don’t you go back to India? And embrace the fabulous human rights there?

My parents came here as immigrants from SE Asia in the 60s, as the British government was recruiting and paid them to come and work here in the NHS. They would never say that other people shouldn’t now come.

Ukrainians are more culturally compatible. And it's only women and kids coming. Men are still fighting.

So you think people who are like us should have more rights than people who aren't?

Sounds suspiciously like some sort of apartheid notion to me.

They can be enshrined in domestic legislation.

And we can also deport illegals and control our borders

Yes but a major reason why any of these would be included in a statute is because of the ECHR. It underpins the values that everything else stands on.

That's a horrible thing about the country. Obviously depends where you go. I'd never venture to the north.

There's a young female German YouTuber who absolutely adores India and has said what amazing time she's had.

But it shows that the nation can just refuse and deny asylum claims and maintain that entry is only a right for citizens alone.

We never claimed access to any public funds or welfare. My DH worked.

And what did you contribute to the country you came to? I don’t actually care really. But non-working immigrants who don’t want other immigrants to enter the country because they are a drain on resources etc make me cringe at the hypocrisy.

I think people who are more culturally similar should be prioritised in immigration. Helps for societal integration.

Do you think Indians are culturally similar to people in the UK then?

I was a SAHM. Raised my lovely kids. We never took a penny of welfare. Now my kids are grown, I work and enjoy what I do.

Middletoleft · 17/07/2026 08:14

No but its remit needs to be looked at.

To all those wittering on about immigration you might consider looking at why there is the amount of immigration that there is ie the root causes of people movement across the globe to begin with. Then look at the effects of Brexit on Europe.

As always, be careful about what you wish for. Brexit has been such a joy hasn't it.

AutumnHazel · 17/07/2026 08:15

The reason these are in statute is because the democratically elected government of the day aligned with the EHCR and chose to do so. Given the Givernments we have had in the UK, it’s preposterous to think that we wouldn’t have had any legislation giving us rights had we not had the ECHR, and that we would be an authoritarian hell-hole as a result. Look at Canada and Australia - they have no EHCR and still have human rights!

I think they make a good attempt to assimilate. They tend to work hard, study well and be in high earning professions.

But I'd totally understand if people wanted the numbers reduced.

Indian Hindus and Sikhs tend to integrate better than Pakistani Muslims. Obviously you can’t overgeneralise, and plenty of Muslims integrate well, but that seems to be the general tendency.

its a fallacy to believe that all cultures integrate equally well.

DH got a job. I followed.

So you sent someone ahead, they got themselves established and then you wanted to be together? Reunited as a family.

But you can't stretch to understanding why people leaving war would want to do the exact same thing as you've done.

Make it make sense!

Lavender14 · 17/07/2026 08:23

Daafdjdnd · 17/07/2026 07:44

Why does Irish peace have to allow foreigners to come here?

Because again it protects us from war... and at the moment anyway Northern Ireland is part of the UK so affected by policies and decisions made by the UK.

"We never took a penny of welfare."

Are you saying your children were privately educated and have never seen an NHS dentist, optician, gp, health visitor? Visited a public library?

I wanted to say this as well. But was worried I'd get flamed

I ain't stupid sunshine.

I admit that I rushed into this thread and didn't read the whole thing. It was a domestic judge applying the ECHR legislation. This case didn't result and escalate to the Strasbourg court (which is the ECtHR). But the domestic judge applied the ECHR and let these people in. If the ECHR is repealed and replaced, this could be prevented

PP: "I ain't stupid".

PP then goes on to demonstrate that they have no idea what the ECHR is, and no idea about which UK statutory law was used in a UK court to decide a case relating to the UK.

As we are not in Europe any more, we should be able to do like Australia does and refuse most people. This is a small island that is full up.

Which continent are we part of now then? Do you think Brexit moved us to a different location. The EU and ECHR are different things

For those saying that we could enshrine a version in UK law are missing the point that another government could change that law. The rights will be on a shakier foundation.

Dickheads like Farage are using the issues around immigration to convince people to vote against their own best interests. He's a charlatan. He's not on your side. He's a multimillionaire city trader who's only interest is enriching himself and his mates.

The Home office allowed us, we funded ourselves and never relied on the taxpayer.

MaturingCheeseball · 17/07/2026 08:30

So, those in favour of the ruling, please answer whether you think this country is now duty bound to accept all family reunification of any number of people who have immigrated here.

It was noted that the 18 family members in this case did not speak English, could not be accommodated by their sponsor, and included elderly people. So that’s at least four houses needed, plus interpreters, benefits (including pension credit), schooling and healthcare.

The difference is that, based on her comments, @Daafdjdnd believes that the UK Government should have the right to determine who comes to live here. They allowed her, but equally should have had the right not to allow her had they chosen.

And reform can just come in and leave the echr.. nothing stopping them
