The mother and her 3 kids were already in the UK. The court ruled that her 18 additional family members can come because the 3 kids are having"mental health issues" that their family members are trapped in Gaza.

What gives them any right to come here? I missed my mum a lot when we migrated here from India. Did that give my mum a right to come here as well?

Why didn’t you stay with her in India then, if she wasn’t in any danger? Genuine question

I admit I rushed into it (I'm actually on holiday).

A sovereign parliament can and should have been able to repeal and replace this law and prevent others from using this to come to here in the future. Are you saying we should keep to the ECHR and have more come in this way?

Edited

How come all the other signatories aren’t allowing unfettered immigration if its all about the ECHR?

Goodness. Do you need help understanding the concept of humanity, Nige?

The responsibility of the UK government is to UK citizens.

As I mentioned before about India, their own supreme court said "India is not a dharamshala to host refugees from all over the world".

Can you point to where I've said I'm a democrat?

Calling someone stupid is freedom of opinion, doll. A democratic right. "You people" have completely f**ked my country for decades to come because of your willed ignorance, your refusal to learn and understand even basic facts, your misplaced "we're special" exceptionalism and, yes, your blinkered stupidity. "You people" are too craven to admit you didn't know what you were doing in 2016 and as a consequence have screwed yourselves and everyone else - while simultaneously endlessly whining that there's no money, and the NHS doesn't work and why do I have to pay more tax and it's not fair.

Had you listened to the "liberal elite", the country would be £300bn (and counting) richer. Thousands of jobs would still exist. Thousands of British companies would still be operating. That money would be going into services and infrastructure to improve your life. That money would be used to keep your taxes low. But you didn't listen. And you "got" the sovereignty you always had. And as a result you and everyone you know is poorer and the infrastructure you rely on is creaking at the seams . And still you whine about a situation you wanted to happen.

And now "you people" are stamping your little feet and whining about the ECHR. You haven't bothered to learn the facts, you're not listening to informed opinion, you don't know what you're doing. The definition of madness is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different outcome. The definition of stupidity is the section of the English public that repeatedly calls for actions that will make their lives worse, and their country a laughing stock - and then complains when what they called for comes to pass and their lives become worse.

So, exercising my democratic rights, I'm free to call "you people" what I think you are. You're stupid. Grow up and deal with it. And for f's sake, stop whining.

Thank you for admitting that you do not support democracy and do support the enlightened despotism of the “liberal elite” to save the British people from themselves.

I actually voted “Remain” and believe Brexit was a major error…but by failing to grasp nuance and separating the world into the “virtuous” liberals like you, and “deplorable” idiots like everyone who disagrees, you display the contempt which is leading to the collapse of the liberal world order you wish to preserve.

Should Reform win the next General Election (I don’t plan on voting for them), it’s the condescending arrogance of those like you on the “left” that will have turbo-charged that victory.

Whatdidyoujustcallme · 16/07/2026 23:51

Fuck me, for God’s sake - there is a difference between an ‘illegal’ and an asylum seeker. Not having a passport doesn’t make you ‘illegal’. Entering the UK without a visa is not illegal. If they are claiming asylum. People saying leave the ECHR are actually saying ‘do not recognise or accept asylum seekers’.

  1. to claim asylum you have to be on the soil of the country you wish to seek asylum
  2. Brexit ended our membership of ‘first safe country’ which effectively took away our ability to push back asylum seekers as well as anyone trying to enter the country illegally
  3. if you think places like Gaza, Ethiopia, Syria etc have UK Consulates to apply for a UK visa, think again
  4. if you think it is standard in every country for most adults to have a passport, think again. Fuck, a vast amount of Americans don’t have a passport/have never left the US.

Surely you know this? These aren’t complex facts, they’re basic information about entering other countries. I refuse to believe that people are that ignorant, and I therefore can only assume it is their xenophobia enabling them to forget the facts.

The best argument for keeping the ECHR isn’t that it stops future Governments from eroding our human rights, because it clearly doesn’t do that, as such a future Government can remove us from the ECHR and erode our human rights regardless!

Rather, it is that it provides a balance on Parliament, and provides a check against it from inadvertently passing legislation undermining human rights. The ECHR only has value where the Government of the day values the role of the ECHR to do this.

Keeping the ECHR in order to prevent a future Reform Government from eroding human rights, is a bit like trying to protect your valuables by locking a safe with a key, and then giving that safe to a burglar along with the key…. and then expecting that the burglar won’t use the key to open the safe!

Edited

But it stops governments who aren't prepared to leave the ECHR entirely from picking and choosing which of its particular rights they will uphold.

It essentially forces an all or nothing and most of the electorate would not support withdrawal.

Not a bigot, certainly not a racist. Right wing? Yes and I won't be letting you shame me. I'm an adult with agency. If you want to start bleating about quoting you, be consistent. You've mentioned me on an unrelated thread after your post here.

Daafdjdnd · 17/07/2026 00:15

Entering the UK without a visa is a criminal offence under UK domestic law, even for individuals who intend to claim asylum.

Harm to whom? - I don't care for your accusations, including talk of violation for posting with you on a lighthearted football thread. I've seen how you like to accuse others have having the last word. I am more than happy to give it to you.

How have we benefited from taking all these people in?

How do we benefit from not controlling our borders?

We also have to ask and answer the question of whether removing the ECHR will be the magic bullet some think it is in controlling said borders because I'm personally not 100% convinced

Limecar · 17/07/2026 00:31

SuffolkSun really hates the English.

This escalating hate is why I'm leaving. It's disturbing. There are millions here from all over the world and seething hatred for the English is rife. It's scary.

I think also leaving the refugee convention is needed as well. It's the implementation of that that's also causing issues. It was made for a different time.

The largest number of Gazan refugees are in Jordan. Syria and Lebanon also take large numbers. The number coming here is tiny.

According to the Telegraph, the ruling was made under section 6 of the British Human Right Act, which says no public body can breach your human rights. And in fact, it is entirely possible for the BHRA to differ from the ECHR, with justification.

Curiously, I can only find this report on very right leaning media outlets, and there is no record of the judgment on the U.K. courts decision website. Perhaps someone else can find a link to the judgement for more detail.

Look how these countries changed though. They went from prosperous to failed in a matter of decades because they were destabilised.

AutumnHazel · 17/07/2026 07:01

placemats · 16/07/2026 21:51

How are you defining British people?

In this context, simply as adult citizens of the UK who can vote in elections.

AutumnHazel · 17/07/2026 07:10

RodneyKitten · 17/07/2026 06:58

Look how these countries changed though. They went from prosperous to failed in a matter of decades because they were destabilised.

Excellent point.

If we did open our doors to all Gazans, then logically we’d have to do the same to every other person facing war or strife, we would be deluged with millions of people, society would break down, and we’d quickly become the war zone that people would be fleeing from!

I’m not a fan of Reform, but the naivety and suicidal empathy of the “Left” in wanting open borders is far more scary. That really would destroy the country.

AutumnHazel · 17/07/2026 07:20

And what is this nonsense that we would lose all our human rights if we left the ECHR… Legislation that protects are human rights would still exist!

Do you think the likes of Canada, Australia and NZ are akin to North Korea simply because they’re not in the ECHR?

Reaching for such hyperbole in arguing in favour of the ECHR just makes you look ridiculous, and gives ammunition to those who are arguing against it.

It’s a bit like arguing against the death penalty with the argument that we shouldn’t reintroduce it, because then the Government could just kill anyone they liked.

How is the ‘first safe country’ misinformation still going? Do you think other EU countries send everyone back to the first country and all asylum seekers are in Italy, Greece and Spain?

Given the geopolitical division of these nations was driven by British imperialism it is very much our problem

What is your preferred outcome in terms of how many Gazans we take?

I appreciate and value the protection ECHR gives us, on the other hand I do think it’s outdated and naive in some respect in today’s world.

How can one person be allowed to bring in a family of 18?
