To think 30 is middle

And the denial within society isn’t helpful

OP posts:
Monty36 · 14/07/2026 15:20

40 + is middle aged. If most people die around 80 ish.

40 is where you cannot believe you are no longer 30 something. No longer in a younger age bracket. But heading towards the older ones.
40 is when you realise you might have another promotion in you. Possibly. When you still don’t realise how quickly it will feel before you are 50.
And when older parents start to be a worry on the horizon.

40 is where you still have some energy. But start the menopause. And 25 feels a lifetime ago.

Delphiniumandlupins · 14/07/2026 15:29

OP has a 22/23 year old daughter whom she regards as 'young' but in 7 years time she'll be middle aged?

Another2Cats · 14/07/2026 15:36

tartyflette · 14/07/2026 14:57

Well, strictly going by the actual numbers, middle age would be around 35-38. Perhaps almost 40 for women.
A healthy woman aged around 40 today could expect to live to around 80, barring accidents or disease. And averages are always skewed by people dying prematurely.

I agree with your general point but the figures are actually a bit higher than that.

According to the ONS, a 40 year old woman today can expect to live to around 87 on average. So middle age is going to be around 44.

The equivalent for men is 84, so middle age would be 42.

HoldingTheDoor · 14/07/2026 15:18

Not you again. You always post the weirdest age related threads and have done for years and I have no idea why.

What’s weird is that OP must be way older than 30 and so if she thinks 30 is middle aged, then what does that make her!

Hotandpointy · 14/07/2026 15:49

Nope, 40s and 50s are middle aged these days, I’m thoroughly middle aged at 45.

Dragonscaledaisy · 14/07/2026 15:52

Middle age? I consider 0-29 is 'young' age, 30-59 is 'middle' age, 69 upwards 'older' age.

Londonnight · 14/07/2026 15:58

I'm over 60. By your reckoning if 30 is middle aged then I should be dead by now!!

Pistachiocake · 14/07/2026 16:03

In some areas, a lot of people die in their 60s, but it's not the average across the UK.
If you mean between youth and age related aches, maybe, though some people are amazingly fit and healthy in their 80s.
If you're talking about the fact it's when people have married and started to have kids/when life stops being about putting yourself first, depends on the person,
A lot of people say when you have your first kid, whether you're 15 or 50 you become middle-aged, because life is always about putting them first now.

wheresmeaircon · 14/07/2026 16:05

I knew MNs is weird & they don’t see 60 as old but 30 isn’t middle aged. Life expectancy is 80

MyGirlJ · 14/07/2026 16:06

You're still harping on about this?!

Daffodilsinthespring · 14/07/2026 16:08

Middle aged is ten years older Oder than I am currently. I’m in my prime at 57. Dd is 30 and she’s young. My parents are over 90. They are getting on a bit now.

ApplebyArrows · 14/07/2026 16:10

Well even if it is, your daughter will then also be middle-aged in just a few years, so what's the big deal?

XenoBitch · 14/07/2026 16:12

Are you the same OP who posted about her 22 year old DD dating a "middle aged man" who was 29, about to turn 30?

Doggymummar · 14/07/2026 16:21

FFS you can tell the kids are off

OldrNWisr · 14/07/2026 16:23

Don’t be silly

Edited

Yes.

RaininSummer · 14/07/2026 16:25

Thirty is still pretty young I think. Definitely not a middle aged mindset or lifestyle for most people of that age regardless of whether people die at sixty which, on the whole, they done I think after fifty is when people tend to seem middle aged.

Choice4567 · 14/07/2026 16:26

Also place marking to find out what 30 is the middle of! I’m going with 30 is the middle number of cakes eaten in a week

CasperGutman · 14/07/2026 16:27

In my head most people can expect to live to be 80 or thereabouts, and "middle aged" relates to adulthood only, so I ignore everything up to 19. You're a young adult in your 20s and 30s, middle aged in your 40s and 50s, then whatever we want to call the other bit when in your sixties and seventies.

HappilyDivorced89 · 14/07/2026 16:27

For goodness sakes op, let your ADULT daughter date whoever she wants. If it turns out to be a big mistake, she'll figure that out for herself.

I repeat what I said on your original thread - Cambridge Dictionary defines middle aged as:
Middle-aged is the period of adult life roughly between the ages of 40 and 65. It is the stage when an individual is no longer considered young but has not yet reached old age.

I'm 37 and I don't consider myself middle aged...yet.

Pinkgin00 · 14/07/2026 16:27

Are you the same poster who started a thread, horrified that her 20 something year old daughter was dating a "middle aged man" ( age 29...) Everyone had said you are ridiculous and 29/30 isn't middle ages, so you have started another thread?

LeticiaMorales · 14/07/2026 16:28

Choice4567 · 14/07/2026 16:26

🤣 dunno, but this OP has got a bit of a bee in their bonnet!

TheIdlerReturns · 14/07/2026 16:28

I'm guessing from your user name that you're meaning age. These days 60 is probably middle-aged. The goal posts keep moving. What is society in denial about?

SweetnsourNZ · 14/07/2026 16:29

I think menopause is probably a good indication of middle aged for women so late 40s early 50s. I do realise that some women go through it earlier for different reasons without being middle aged.
I wouldn't consider anyone under 70 as elderly these days either.

SummerInSun · 14/07/2026 16:29

I decided I was finally a proper grown up at age 30. Now I look back and think I was still an infant!
