A nuisance and a let down

Too heavy to carry easily when shopping

Too unweildy to handle without looking like Stan Laurel (one for the young 'uns there)

Once home, dont really have a chopping board big enough to have enough space

Water everywhere, all over the chopping board and spilling over onto the worktops

Then the thing is tasteless

Then I cant fit the leftovers in the fridge properly

And I bought the smallest one I could find.

Baby watermelons are the bomb. Especially the seedless variety. But also, watermelons don't ripen off the vine like cantaloupe does and honeydew sometimes does. So if your watermelon was tasteless, it was picked too soon.

I live in California near an area famous for 'heirloom' melon production. I guess they're rarer than hen's teeth in the UK but if you ever get the chance, try a ripe Sharlyn melon. When they're fully ripe they taste of honey, vanilla, pineapple, and coconut. Scoop out the seeds and fill the hollow with either vanilla ice cream or a nice sherbet. Food of the Gods on a hot summer day.

All of which are lovely, refreshing summer snacks. Still a full tier below watermelon though.

The watermelon, you have to faff around adding copious feta, olives, the right dressing, blah blah blah. Plus clear up the puddle thats run down your kitchen cabinets and all over the floor

Ive been eating watermelon for years. God knows why. For the water really. Im afraid this isnt a 'bad' one, its just 'watermelon'

Standard watermelon. Even when we've been in Spain I hvaent really enjoyed them that much

I cant drink copious amount of liquid so I have to eat liquidy foods so I go for the watermelon but thats not to say I enjoy as such.

I much prefer honeydew melon. Find water melon relatively tasteless.

You're all buying the crappy watermelon from Tesco if you think it has no flavour.

Go to a little shop and get one of this bag long ones, much nicer.

Watermelon in the UK can be lacking in flavour I admit, but it’s much improved with a generous squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice and a pinch of sea salt. The perfect heatwave snack.

I mean despite my watermelon ambivalence, I do admire that.

I wouldnt do it myself. I buy my cocktails pre mixed for example. Just drinking a negroni. Straight out the bottle. Delish. No chopping or measuring needed.

You eat the seeds (you can actually buy them on their own from some places).
Watermelon is amazing! And the tastiest birthday cake, with yoghurt and pistachio seeds on top.

My DD loves them, I am not enamoured .
I'll try getting one from the Turkish Supermarket near me I think.

Our guinea-pigs used to devour them , they'd have a slice of the rind with a centimetre of the flesh left on. Perfect hot weather snack for them ( but only in small amounts )

My kids absolutely love it, but I think it’s absolutely minging.

Shame, as it’s so pretty to look at. Like it should taste of tropical fruits, candy floss and ice lollies. But it just tastes like stale water and leaves. 😆

I got one in the week, from Lidl. Can't be arsed with them myself, it was 5 kilos. Daughter halved it on the equator and scoffed one half, then moaned that she was too full.

We were in Kazakhstan and they sell them at the roadside, honestly, you can barely lift them. They're about 3 times the size of the biggest ones you see here.

Watermelon has to be eaten when river or sea is just a step away so all the juices get washed off🤣.

They chop a lot of water melon into long chunks at the care home I visit and they pass it around to the residents three or four times a day in this heat to eat like lollies to help keep them hydrated. I like it when someone has prepared it for me.

Watermelon is the turnip of fruit. Always appears on hotel buffet in Spain because it's so cheap they can't give the stuff away.
No taste, just water. So, so many better alternatives, most of which aren't melons.

Watermelon is delicious eaten with blue cheese. Otherwise I'm not that fussed about it. The local world foods shops round here sell quarters of it which makes life a lot easier, though they're quarters of truly massive ones so usually about 20 inches long!

I have just remembered that we, as a family, first discovered melon in the 1970s when the supermarket started to sell honeydew melons halved and wrapped in plastic.

Mum used to buy it for a weekend treat and she and I loved it but my Dad wouldn't touch it. He said he had been given loads of melon as a soldier in WW2 and couldn't stand it. He was in North Africa for some of the war so I bet he was given watermelon and assumed all melon would be like that. I can see where he was coming from but it's a shame he wouldn't give other varieties a chance.

It doesn’t really taste nice in the UK I think . I’ve lived overseas for a little while now and will need to readjust my expectations when I’m back to fruit being wrapped in plastic , costing a fortune and tasting largely underwhelming.
