Watermelon is a nuisance and a let down

Thats right. I said it

A nuisance and a let down

Too heavy to carry easily when shopping

Too unweildy to handle without looking like Stan Laurel (one for the young 'uns there)

Once home, dont really have a chopping board big enough to have enough space

Water everywhere, all over the chopping board and spilling over onto the worktops

Then the thing is tasteless

Then I cant fit the leftovers in the fridge properly

And I bought the smallest one I could find.

I love watermelon. I'll eat the seeds and everything.

mum2jakie · 12/07/2026 17:25

I fancy a watermelon now!

MrsMitford3 · 12/07/2026 17:26

I think a lot of supermarket watermelons in the uk are horrible but there is a fruit and veg stall in my town at the weekend and honestly it is the most delicious watermelon ever-so so lovely in the heat.
And just eat the seeds!!

Blueberries0761 · 12/07/2026 17:26

Chilled pineapple is just as refreshing but tastier imo. I can't be bothered chopping a fresh one though in this heat, so I'm buying already sliced/cubed pineapple. Grapes and strawberries too, so long as they're kept very cold.

Watermelon salad with onion, cucumber, feta and mint. Prosciutto, salami, or anything you fancy mixed in.

Glittertwins · 12/07/2026 17:33

We did the Jamie Oliver recipe with vodka poured into it over a period of time. It’s probably the only time I’ve liked watermelon as others have said - it’s a tasteless faff!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 12/07/2026 17:12

I disagree, I think my diet is at least 50% watermelon at the moment!

I think I can beat that, we have worked our way through about 4 this week and Ive eating very little else

However, it is still a let down and a nuisance.

I have the honey dew ones as well and also the sugar matisse whatever that is, that goes down a treat but too sweet to have with my olives and feta.

Watermelon seems less sweet than other melons. I’ve been buying the huge ones from Waitrose, they’re glorious. So refreshing when eaten straight from the fridge.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 12/07/2026 17:21

I'm meh on watermelon. Sometimes I just fancy a slice, dusted with ground ginger, but then I eat the seeds as well because I can't be bothered with the faff. I will probably get a watermelon plant growing in my stomach, won't I?

They're definitely nicer abroad.

Ive been eating the seeds, I cant be bothered to remove them, too much faff like someone said.

Also I never have fruit chilled, I cannot stand cold food.

Go to a Turkish supermarket where they sell melon halves and quarters.
I've never been let down with those.

If you do buy supermarket melon, you want one with a large yellow sunspot and webbing on.
Those will be sweet and juicy.

wheresthesnowgone · 12/07/2026 17:40

I buy trays of ready cut wedges of watermelon from the supermarket - about 6 wedges. Who has space to store and deal with a whole watermelon?

kate6754 · 12/07/2026 17:41

A light sprinkling of salt on watermelon is delish. Not for people with high blood pressure!

outerspacepotato · 12/07/2026 17:42

Watermelon is a gift of the gods.

Serve sprinkled with Tajín.

For those who drink alcohol, let soak in tequila for a while.

Disturbia81 · 12/07/2026 17:43

I’ve only had a few decent watermelon and that was in the Med, freshly grown and sold from a street vendor. So sweet!
otherwise I’d rather have honeydew

Exactly, every time Ive opened the fridge this week I have this massive thing lolling about ready to jump out at me and land on my toes.

I have a soft spot for watermelon as it was the only thing my mum could stomach when going through chemo. I remember once I couldn’t find one anywhere for her so stopped at a posh fruit and veg shop and bought a watermelon for £7!

HoraceCope · 12/07/2026 17:45

far too big,
gets wasted, always
the only solution is to spend a fortune on slices!

Well exactly, someting must have happened to my tummy this week because I really just cant stomach any foods properly so am living on this stuff because its the wettest thing I can find but its really just a let down.

they are delicious though

GlomOfNit · 12/07/2026 17:46

I find that watermelons bought in the UK have got a lot better, actually! Most supermarkets do mini ones which are portable and you can finish them in one sitting. The feta and watermelon salad thing (which isn't REMOTELY Greek, I have Greek friends who laugh at this) is good - I like putting lots of chopped mint, black olives and chunks of cucumber in.

GlomOfNit · 12/07/2026 17:47

But yy, a bigger one is a right old PITA to have in the fridge, sticky juice everywhere and taking up half a shelf. Grin

Elsvieta · 12/07/2026 17:47

Tastes nasty, smells worse. Buy tinned mango and peach and put in the fridge.

Notverylikely · 12/07/2026 17:48

Strong agree! A complete waste of time. Looks pretty but hardly any flavour (and I don’t much like what flavour there is).

professionalcommentreader · 12/07/2026 17:49

Love it, I use the ice cream scope though to take its innards out.

RaraRachael · 12/07/2026 17:50

I hate it. Watery and tasteless
