A nuisance and a let down

Too heavy to carry easily when shopping

Too unweildy to handle without looking like Stan Laurel (one for the young 'uns there)

Once home, dont really have a chopping board big enough to have enough space

Water everywhere, all over the chopping board and spilling over onto the worktops

Then the thing is tasteless

Then I cant fit the leftovers in the fridge properly

And I bought the smallest one I could find.

Me too! I always thought watermelons were mostly nice because they were refreshing as mostly water. But bought one whilst weve been in Spain and it was so sweet and delicious! Almost worth lugging home in 32c heat!

I love it but loads always goes to waste and the watery mess is annoying. It's the only fruit I revert to buying chopped in a little pot from supermarkets but it never tastes as good and is a huge rip off.

Yes exactly. The best I had this week was my usual salad with it, black olives and feta, with seeds and herbs etc. I left it in tupperware in the sun on my desk, didnt have time for lunch, so took it home and later that evening had it for my tea, I think it had managed to ferment itself and mixed with the olive juices it tasted like wine. That was ok. It didnt let me down that day.

If you freeze the excess watermelon, it makes great daiquiris.

Just white rum, a squeeze of lime, a dash of icing sugar (or sugar syrup) and frozen chunks of watermelon.

I like watermelon but I do agree with you. I bought one a couple of week’s ago and even though I cut it and sliced up one half I couldn’t fit it all in the fridge. I ended up throwing one half away because it got mankey too quickly in the heat.

Ah what I'd do for a watermelon now (it's winter where I am so not in season)

I usually buy them in halves or quarters. I live alone so there is only so much you can eat in a few days. The bonus of that is, is that you can see how ripe it is that way. We only get the huge oval ones though.

When it's hot and we have a crowd, we get home from the shop with it, it gets thrown into the swimming pool to keep cool and it's perfect place for storage 😂 its really not unusual to swim with the watermelon bobbing about with you.

Then someone is allocated the job with a big knife and to go outside and chop the whole thing up. Never in the kitchen as it's too messy. Into cubes and into a few containers. Then nibbled on as and when.

Keep some of the rind and make watermelon candy with it after.

I quite like it but only served to me in slices on holiday, I can never be arsed to buy the mostly depressing ones we get in the UK.

And it smells so bad!!!!!!

We also get melon seed oil.

Such an underrated product. Not for eating but in cosmetics, for your hair etc. When it's dry in winter I use it on my face at night. It sinks in beautifully Or any dry patches or dry hair it works wonders for.

Oh my, that's a blast from the past! I think that's in his Naked Chef days when he was still a young single chap. I remember watching that on TV and thinking he was a young cheeky chap who had great ideas. Makes me feel old to think I watch him now and he's definitely middle-aged, father of five. Is it five?

Our greengrocers sell it in big chunks - eg a quarter of a watermelon - by weight. It means you can get as much as you’ve got fridge space for, and it’s generally taken from v large ones which are usually tastier. And I just eat all the pips.

Supermarket watermelons are often awful. Very bland.

Buy one of the really large ones from an international food shop, and those taste amazing. Often, they sell half sizes which lets you see how ripe it is inside. Really, you want them to be a darker red.

Yes!!!

I'm not saying a watermelon can't be dressed up with other things to make it appealing in hot weather. But for actual taste you can't beat a Galia or, better still, a Charentais.

I love watermelon, so refreshing. I grow Sugar Baby which are small sweet water melons. I also grow cantaloupe. Now my mouth is watering.

I buy ready chopped in a plastic container, all supermarkets do that and they last a few days. I love it and it's very nutritious.

Other tyoes of melon are good for you too, cantaloupe has more flavour but watermelon is lovely, crunchy and so juicy. Try a melon medley.

DD11 loves them. She's learnt to carry them in the shop, chop them at home and wrap them to freeze them in the freezer. Takes away all the bother for me 🤣

Sounds like you got a bad one if its so watery and tasteless.

You can get smaller ones too that are easier to handle. Perhaps might be a good idea to try that next time.

Vodka watermelon obvs wasn’t a thing when you were a teenager. Its sole purpose in life is to absorb alcohol and get teenagers ridiculously drunk. I don’t recommend. Even the smell of it makes me want to heave, more than 30 years later

The watermelon I buy from my local Turkish shop are always juicy and sweet.
No problem carrying - they put them in bags or offer halves/quarters for sale.
No problem storing - I slice them up and put in fridge.
YABU.
