To hate people chucking balls around in pools?

Just pondering from my sunbed!

No issues with inflatables but I really hate people throwing balls about in pools. It feels really antisocial. I got clocked in the face by some kids chucking one about earlier and it knocked my sunglasses off, my 4yo got walloped in the back of head with one earlier with grown-ups as part of the game and was a bit upset,

Fortunately it turns out they are actually banned in this pool so once a lifeguard who actually cared turned up, it stopped, but I felt quite annoyed about it because it takes up huge swathes of the pool that you can’t go in lest you get whacked in the face or just be in the middle of someone else’s game.

I would never do it. If you do, do you consider the fact other people might get hit by the ball or that you’re taking up a lot of space?

Strapping in Grin

Not sure strapping in is necessary, YANBU to be allowed by balls when they’re not allowed at the pool. If other pools allow it (presumably not as close to sunbeds) then that is not unreasonable.

Sake, Chill out, join in. People are having fun.

hugasaurus · 10/07/2026 12:31

Yes I suppose but I get annoyed in any situation it’s happening, whether allowed or not! Just so happens it’s not allowed here but we’ve been places where it is allowed and I’ve felt the same.

I just feel it makes the pool worse for every other person and is just a rubbish thing to do. In the sea or something where space isn’t an issue fine, but in a pool with lots of other people in it and around it, it feels like a bit of a selfish activity.

It doesn’t make it worse for every other person though, obviously some people enjoy it and others don’t care. It makes it less enjoyable for you, and that’s your problem if at a pool that allows it. Different people like different things, I think lying on a sunbed next to a pool looks bloody miserable but loads of people enjoy that.

Not my idea of fun though. I want to enjoy my time without being clobbered by a ball or soaked by others chucking 'toys' about. Your idea of fun doesn't trump mine

If the pool allows balls and you don’t like that, choose a sun bed further from the pool.

Doseofreality · 10/07/2026 12:34

If you want to take over a pool throwing a ball around, get your own villa and private pool.
That’s my opinion as someone who is not a selfish dick.

Not selfish, but people can only have fun near you in the way you prefer 😅 alternatively if you aren’t tolerant of other people in public spaces then get your own villa and private pool.

Rothburypixie · 10/07/2026 12:36

Move your sun bed further back or get a villa.

Woodfiresareamazing2 · 10/07/2026 12:37

I'm with you, @hugasaurus .

I hate it too.

I think it's really antisocial, as is blaring loud music at the pool or beach, but at least you don't get physically injured by the music. (Having said that, I have tinnitus which IS affected by loud music).

I see it as thoughtless people putting their own enjoyment above anyone else's.

hugasaurus · 10/07/2026 12:37

I guess but me lying reading a book on a sunbed doesn’t really impact other people in any way, which is the point I think? There’s lots of stuff I don’t think would be fun on holiday but it’s not really any concern of mine when it doesn’t affect me.

We were in the pool when the ball throwing was going on and four people ended up basically taking up half of the pool (and the shallower end) as they were lobbing the ball between them and obviously no one else wanted to stand in the middle of it in case they got hit (I got clobbered with it as I entered into the shallow end with DD2 and we were trying to move out of the area).

Anyway I’m off back in as they’ve gone but will check back with interest Grin

Anything that has an impact on other people should be banned

It's really not that hard! And the world would be such a better place

Yeah but that’s different because balls are not allowed at that pool, so people playing with the ball there was obviously unreasonable.

SqueakyFromme · 10/07/2026 12:39

I don’t like to think of balls in pools either 🤢

bungobungobungo · 10/07/2026 12:41

Just returned from holiday where there were a few instances of this, mainly throwing to each other in quite a respectful way. It did mean that others were prevented from using the pool while these couples or families were playing. And yes there were notices saying not allowed but it was Greece so….

Oh no, we've got the long MN list of things we're not allowed to do in our gardens, and now we're starting one of what we're not allowed to do in hotel pools! 😭

I do always opt for a villa and private pool. Hotel pools are grim.

maddiemookins16mum · 10/07/2026 12:45

I hate it. It's normally blokes who are totally oblivious to the fact most people within 20 feet of them are on high altert of being struck by their ball. Knobsters.

So why are you moaning? It doesn’t even apply to you. Just being miserable for the sake of it.

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/07/2026 12:46

Ex lifeguard here. Rough ball games in busy pools are totally unacceptable. Where I worked (leisure centre) we allowed ball games if the pool was quiet and the play was reasonably gentle. Nect time, complain the lifeguard if they don’t put a stop to the ball games.

TheChaffinch · 10/07/2026 12:46

One day your four year old will want to play with a ball in the pool.
Fond memories of hours playing with my DC with one of those bouncing Waboba balls. Small soft balls designed for water.
Obviously not if not allowed but presumably you chose a family hotel where people want to have fun in the pool.

Goodness, I really rattled your cage, didnt I? Being rude and personal is usually a sign you have run out of arguments.

Have a good day throwing your ball about or your toys out of the pram
