To hate people chucking balls around in pools?

Just pondering from my sunbed!

No issues with inflatables but I really hate people throwing balls about in pools. It feels really antisocial. I got clocked in the face by some kids chucking one about earlier and it knocked my sunglasses off, my 4yo got walloped in the back of head with one earlier with grown-ups as part of the game and was a bit upset,

Fortunately it turns out they are actually banned in this pool so once a lifeguard who actually cared turned up, it stopped, but I felt quite annoyed about it because it takes up huge swathes of the pool that you can’t go in lest you get whacked in the face or just be in the middle of someone else’s game.

I would never do it. If you do, do you consider the fact other people might get hit by the ball or that you’re taking up a lot of space?

Inconsiderate ball thrower alert. 🙄

Yanbu op. Some people are just selfish cunts.

SugarPlumHippo · 10/07/2026 12:50

It's on a par with people playing cricket on the beach. They could move to a quieter part, but no - they play near others (ie. me). So even if the ball doesn't actually hit me or the kids, i'm nervous it will so am on high alert. which is not what i want to spend my time doing!

i'm not averse to pool games per se, but boisterous ones with no regard for other pool users really pisses me off.

Ellensapple · 10/07/2026 12:50

I do get what you are saying but we’ve had many a great game of Marco Polo in our day with randomners from all over the continent so I’ve mixed feelings. I would never do it if it was interfering with other people enjoyment though. It has been more for villa pools where everyone sharing the pool has gotten on board or when the littlies are having a nap and the teens get a turn.

AdultHumanEmail · 10/07/2026 12:52

You are well within your rights to be annoyed. The pool is for swimming. Ball sports are for the park.

When I go to my local lido (where footballs are banned, mind you!) I take my locker key with me on my wrist. If a ball hits, splashes, or lands too close to me - I will whip the key out and pop the ball. It is a quick lesson that the local youths won't forget in a hurry...

museumum · 10/07/2026 12:52

What do you expect your child do to when they're 8, 9, 10? Swim sedate lengths? stand around in contemplation? My kids like to throw a ball back and forth - it keeps them amused. We only do it back and forth between two people taking a small strip of pool, only a small ball and have never hit anybody with it. IMO it's not more 'antisocial' than jumping in or most other ways kids enjoy pools.

Boreded · 10/07/2026 12:55

I don’t think balls are the problem, selfish people are.

my husband and son always get a ball for in the pool, but they take themselves to the quietest point of the pool where nobody else is. They also don’t launch the ball where it can hit people, cause big splashes, or overshoot the pool and get to the sunbeds.

If mine were in the pool with you and playing with a ball I would be very surprised if it bothered you as they are considerate of those around them. It sounds like a lot of the posters here have an issue with idiots with balls, not the balls themselves.

Mine would have quoted yours but we cross posted.

Tableforjoan · 10/07/2026 12:58

I don’t mind as long as they are doing it out of the way. I don’t like it when people are doing it over your heads.

Also keep the ball in the pool in your area not at other people.

Pools are a funny thing though. Because if your not playing balls or swimming lengths then your just kinda stood bobbing around pretty pointless.

Miserable

bet you say that until YOU are being inconvenienced by other people 😂

Mygardenshedisfallingdown · 10/07/2026 13:03

The heat is making a lot of people grumpy.

basiically · 10/07/2026 13:03

Move from the pool then.
Why go somewhere when you know kids and familys are going to be there having fun.

Just go book somewhere thats adults only or a private villa/ getaway.

Monty36 · 10/07/2026 13:04

If your individual pool, fine. A communal pool, no.
It Is an old fashioned thing. Consideration for other people.
Often in short supply.

i don't allow mine to throw balls.

I take them to pools with slides, and/ or pools who have activities scheduled etc.

That said, if I see kids throwing a ball at each other in one corner when there's plenty of space for everybody else, I let them be, it's when they chuck things at people they become a nuisance.

or in another word, I am a lazy parent and I leave before I can be call out about not supervising and parenting my own children 😂

category12 · 10/07/2026 13:14

Depends on the size of the pool, how busy it is and the general demographic.

If it's a busy or small pool, it's not fair to take up loads of space so you can play a game between a few people.

If there's small kids, then they're almost inevitably going to get smashed in the face. Which makes the players arseholes.

If people are trying to swim, then it's also unfair to dominate the pool. Stick to a small area of it.

It's just about being respectful of other people's fun as well as your own.

Yes, that is exactly what I expect from (well-behaved) children. The swimming pool is for swimming. If you cannot control your unruly DC, then I suggest you go somewhere that it is appropriate to throw a ball in the water. My local leisure centre hosts water polo at 8pm on a Wednesday - perhaps that would be of interest? Otherwise perhaps leave them at home until they understand their civic responsibility to others.

Sake, Chill out, join in. People are having fun.

Isnt that point? you cant chill out if you are being hit in the face periodically with a ball....

It's a hotel pool, not an Olympic training centre. Unclench, life is nicer that way.

KrazyKatty · 10/07/2026 13:32

Ugh, holidays with the great unwashed. No thanks!

Floppyearedlab · 10/07/2026 13:33

It’s selfish
You have to stand way apart to play like this and then anyone in the middle is in the firing line. Especially when people have poor aim.

DisappearingGirl · 10/07/2026 13:37

Yeah I think it just needs people to use a bit of consideration and common sense.

If you are gently throwing a ball a short distance to a small child, it's not likely to bother anyone.

If you're a group of 4 or 5 adults lobbing a ball hard and taking up a quarter of a busy pool, this really annoys me.

SharkEatsDonkeyTails · 10/07/2026 13:39

I think balls are fun and should be fine but only when people are careful with them, so not throwing them hard and far enough to hit someone in the face.

if it's a hotel pool, they are generally not that big, so of course it's a dick move to throw a ball around and bother everybody else.

maddiemookins16mum · 10/07/2026 13:44

Just wanted to add that the type of ball makes a huge difference so a foam or blow up beach ball is not nearly as bad as a hard ball.
