To hate people chucking balls around in pools?

Just pondering from my sunbed!

No issues with inflatables but I really hate people throwing balls about in pools. It feels really antisocial. I got clocked in the face by some kids chucking one about earlier and it knocked my sunglasses off, my 4yo got walloped in the back of head with one earlier with grown-ups as part of the game and was a bit upset,

Fortunately it turns out they are actually banned in this pool so once a lifeguard who actually cared turned up, it stopped, but I felt quite annoyed about it because it takes up huge swathes of the pool that you can’t go in lest you get whacked in the face or just be in the middle of someone else’s game.

I would never do it. If you do, do you consider the fact other people might get hit by the ball or that you’re taking up a lot of space?

it's either playing rugby IN the pool (ball game with a rugby ball, it's not quiet or splash free😂)
or a more organised rugby game where you score by jumping IN the pool.

Neither are suitable. They're not dangerous, just would ruin the peace of anyone not involved in the chaos.

Sounds great fun! I would enjoy seeing kids playing that on holiday.

I don't think I said swimmers can swim on land, did I? I think I've made my point pretty clear but please correct me if I'm wrong. Hotel pools are not only for swimming.

they're not for ball games either? Hotels have started banning balls I heard how it sounds and inflatables because people didn't show common sense.

Understood, but I think that's a shame and a case of those without any common sense ruining it for everyone else. It's perfectly possible to play a ball game sensibly.

Our dc have a rule they are allowed to throw balls until others come into the pool. We have been fortunate to have circumstances with not a lot of others sharing the pool though, for various reasons. After that, they are allowed dive toys or a ring used for floating not throwing.

I don't think that is too draconian.

Far too permissive. I would shepherd my DC away from any family as antisocial as this. Peeing in the pool isn't okay just because you're the only one in it at the time.

Ball-tossers and pool-pissers are one and the same. Degrading public spaces for their own selfish enjoyment.

Sake, Chill out, join in. People are having fun.

Is it fun when the ball hits someone and can be quite painful?

hugasaurus · 10/07/2026 16:20

Update: Good lifeguard is gone, crap one is back so the ball has returned. It hit another woman in the face while she was helping her daughter get into her rubber ring, this woman is now my idol as without missing a beat she took the ball and absolutely lobbed it out of the pool and down a steep bank into the undergrowth. The boys are trying to work out how they get it back, who I’m guessing is their gran is throwing daggers at this woman and I want to buy her a drink!

What do you expect your child do to when they're 8, 9, 10? Swim sedate lengths? stand around in contemplation? My kids like to throw a ball back and forth - it keeps them amused. We only do it back and forth between two people taking a small strip of pool, only a small ball and have never hit anybody with it. IMO it's not more 'antisocial' than jumping in or most other ways kids enjoy pools.

But as you’ve just described, some people (like you) have consideration for others.
A couple of little kids throwing a ball round with proper supervision is a lot different from a load of loutish (probably half drunk) adults getting a rowdy game of water polo going

AdultHumanEmail · 10/07/2026 15:34

I will dare to say it: the swimming pool is for swimming. If you are not there to swim, you are a hindrance to those who wish to use a pool for its intended purpose. You wouldn't throw a ball around at the opera, or at a restaurant, or at a spa - why should a swimming pool be any different?

If it is your own swimming pool, then go right ahead and fill it with dog muck and knives for all I care. But in public? Swim, or get out of the way.

At a indoor pool in the uk which is set up for lane swimming, sure. They are for swimming.

But hotel pools are not set up for grannies doing 50 lengths of head out of the water breaststroke. They are there for people to jump into, float around on and have, y'know, fun.

Anyone who is moaning about a pool at a hotel in the sun being used for that has not chosen their holiday destination carefully enough.

hugasaurus · 10/07/2026 18:45

No more to report, pool adventures all over for the day, but am heartened that the zeitgeist seems to be with my crotchety ways! Off to find something sharp to take with me poolside tomorrow… (just for the ball, don’t worry!)

You are not being unreasonable! Totally selfish and it puts you on edge cause you’re always waiting to either get hit or be expected to pass the ball back. F* off somewhere else !

DecoratingDiva · 11/07/2026 08:49

This is one of those polarising things, you are either team “I think it’s fun and don’t give a shit about other people” or team “oh god I hate those people”.

I am one of the latter.

There is always someone who thinks their boisterous games in the pool or picnic area are great and doesn’t understand why the others being pushed aside or hit by balls & elbows might be considered a problem. Same with the bbq crowd who don’t get why being downwind of their hellish smoke in a public space may be a problem.

You can’t win though, all you can really do is remove yourself from the space

mamajong · 11/07/2026 10:02

The kids and I love to play volley or catch in the pool. Obviously not in places its not allowed but we are an active sporty family and its fun! We always invite others to join us and many do so its proven a great way to make new friends on holiday. We are respectful of others, wary of babies and sunbathers etc as much as possible but why do you think you can dictate how people enjoy the space.

If its not allowed fine, but where it is allowed you have a choice not to go there if it bothers you. So many fun police these days!

Humblebumbley · 11/07/2026 10:03

I think that kind of rough play with a ball where it’s being thrown hard and with several people taking up space is rude.

When on holiday recently there were a few different sets of people throwing a ball between them, some kids some adults, and it didn’t bother me in the slightest whether I was in the pool or reading. But none took up a huge amount of space, were loud or throwing it hard enough to hurt anybody. Worst thing was chucking it back to them a few times if it got stuck under my sun lounger.

Maybe you were just unlucky with some particularly inconsiderate people at your pool

DogBagKite · 11/07/2026 10:12

It is just an odd thing to do all round. You can play catch standing in a field. You don't need to be in the water stopping people swimming. You can't swim standing in a field. Go play ball games in an appropriate place!

no you are really not 😂that's not what an "active sporty family" is, what you describe is just being a selfish inconsiderate pain in the neck

you have a choice not to go there if it bothers you
No one shouldn't HAVE to keep away from the pool designed for families and everybody because of you, that's the key point.

"Active families" like you also tend to get really annoyed when people dare standing or swimming in the middle of their "game", which tells you all you need to know.

Sitting down on a football pitch in the middle of a football match is a dick move. Floating around or swimming in a swimming pool... you'd think that's what they're designed for?😂

Yes we are an active, sporty family - i think i would know 🤣 This is not limited solely to playing games in the swimming pool 🤣

I dont get at all annoyed by other people using the pool for all of it's designated uses so thats another incorrect assumption 🙄

Of course we dont sit down in the middle of a football.pitch thats a completely different thing - what we are talking about here is a holiday leisure pool where ball games ARE PERMITTED.

If the hotel didnt want ball games they would say no ball games and we would adhere to that because we know how to follow rules.

We tend to stay in hotels with multiple pools on holiday and only play in those where ball games ARE ALLOWED. Often there are adult only pools and pools for younger kids and guess what? We dont go in those.

Personally i find miserable fun police types like you annoying but you are not banned so we have to put up with you. Its pretty lame how you think that because you dont like the rules you think we should all use the space the way YOU think it should be used. Yet I am the selfish one here? 🤣🤣🤣 hilarious!

hugasaurus · 11/07/2026 12:09

Been reflecting on this a bit more and I think one of the things I find so annoying is that you’re always on alert when in the pool and there’s a ball wanging around the place. I’m always conscious of it whistling past my head, I’m always kind of mentally checking where they are chucking it, adjusting so I’m not in the line of fire, flinching when it sails towards my face, etc. It takes up space not just physically but in the back of your mind too.

Anyway despite being a somewhat active and sporty family ourselves, I won’t inflict the scourge of balls on anyone! I do believe you can have enough fun without making other people’s experience worse. I don’t let my kids shout and scream or disturb people or anything like that so I won’t let them chuck a ball around and risk hitting people with it or take up a disproportionate amount of space in a shared pool.

In some ways I do feel envious of people who don’t seem to care about or really consider their impact on their people, it must be an easier way to live in many ways, but I just can’t reconcile it with my own values!

I’ve not gone to pool today as out elsewhere but I didn’t see the boys manage to retrieve their ball yesterday after legend lady lobbed it into the steep undergrowth so here’s hoping!

yes, people like you are the reasons why hotels have to write rules because people can't use commons sense,

If the hotel didnt want ball games they would say no ball games and we would adhere to that because we know how to follow rules.

Oh you are probably right, that's why we see more and more completely baffling "rules" because people have no idea how to respect others or need to be told in black and white what is obvious for everybody else.
Just because it's not expressly forbiden has never meant it is PERMITTED, just that until CF arrive, it wasn't necessary to state the obvious.

i find miserable fun police types like you annoying but you are not banned so we have to put up with you.
banned from using the pool you are trying to claim at yours? 😂😂😂

What you spectacularly fail to understand is that YOUR way to use the space is preventing everyone else to use a public or shared space, mine is not.

I look forward to enjoy my time in the middle of a pool, and if it ruins your ball game because I am in the way, that's sad for you 😂 Maybe I am not from such an "active sporty" family myself😂

ZanyPoet · 11/07/2026 12:54

What is sad is that one idiotic family is enough to ruin the enjoyment for everybody else. You have multi pools, busy resorts, everybody gets on with it, kids splash a bit but everybody enjoy themselves, when suddenly the "special" family arrives and becomes a loud and unpleasant nuisance.

I think that above selfishness and complete lack of social concept, they genuinely believe everybody is looking at them and admire them 😂😂

We should all become ball-chucking lady, only way to get peace back!
