To hate people chucking balls around in pools?

Just pondering from my sunbed!

No issues with inflatables but I really hate people throwing balls about in pools. It feels really antisocial. I got clocked in the face by some kids chucking one about earlier and it knocked my sunglasses off, my 4yo got walloped in the back of head with one earlier with grown-ups as part of the game and was a bit upset,

Fortunately it turns out they are actually banned in this pool so once a lifeguard who actually cared turned up, it stopped, but I felt quite annoyed about it because it takes up huge swathes of the pool that you can’t go in lest you get whacked in the face or just be in the middle of someone else’s game.

I would never do it. If you do, do you consider the fact other people might get hit by the ball or that you’re taking up a lot of space?

The irony of thinking you have the moral right of everything and then posting something as rude and patronising as that 🤣

Sounded pretty sensible to me...

what moral right? Because I have enough common sense to realise that other people don't like getting one of the balls from your "active and sporty" family in the face?

Do you really think they find it amusing or charming?😂 Do you honestly believe your "sportive and active" family trying to take over a pool is a positive to anyone else?

Who's rude here, surely not me.

hugasaurus · 11/07/2026 13:23

I’m the rude one apparently but I am hopeful I can regain some karmic balance by not hitting anyone in the face with a ball and causing a public nuisance. Off to pool this afternoon, will channel legend lady should a ball come my way and yeet it into the abyss.

Im just back from holiday and lost count of the amount of times there were entitled numpties playing ball games across a busy pool oblivious to the problems they were causing hitting people and disrupting others use of the pool. My daughter pointed out it was always young men doing it and just another example of their entitled behaviour and feeling they can manspread into any public area regardless of effect on others.

I wasn't replying to you, nor calling you rude, nor am I the one who described my family as active and sporty.

It's not even the slightest bit sensible to go through life believing that anyone who disagrees with you must just not give a shit about other people. That's very blinkered thinking.

that's not what the debate is about.

Having a negative impact on others can be nothing else than selfish.

Right, but I was talking about OP's last comment, and someone else saying it was sensible. It might be an idea to stop inserting yourself into others' interactions if you're not following.

I get that but you keep replying to me as though I was talking to you, when I wasn't. It's going to cause confusion.

yes, people like you are the reasons why hotels have to write rules because people can't use commons sense,

If the hotel didnt want ball games they would say no ball games and we would adhere to that because we know how to follow rules.

Oh you are probably right, that's why we see more and more completely baffling "rules" because people have no idea how to respect others or need to be told in black and white what is obvious for everybody else.
Just because it's not expressly forbiden has never meant it is PERMITTED, just that until CF arrive, it wasn't necessary to state the obvious.

i find miserable fun police types like you annoying but you are not banned so we have to put up with you.
banned from using the pool you are trying to claim at yours? 😂😂😂

What you spectacularly fail to understand is that YOUR way to use the space is preventing everyone else to use a public or shared space, mine is not.

I look forward to enjoy my time in the middle of a pool, and if it ruins your ball game because I am in the way, that's sad for you 😂 Maybe I am not from such an "active sporty" family myself😂

We obviously go on very different holidays (thank god 🙏) because where i go the rules aren't really baffling at all, different pools are designed for different people to use and everyone is happy. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

As I have already said, we often get other families and kids wanting to join in and have made loads of friends on holiday this way so clearly not annoying everyone. I have already said but will say again it doesnt bother me in the slightest if someone gets in the middle of a game, its hardly a serious thing we just laugh about it together and have fun, a concept thar seems wasted on you.

That said if you intentionally get in the middle of a game to try to be annoying (waste of time as literally no one cares 🤣) and then get hit by a stray ball...oh well! 🤣

You make so many assumptions about people having fun on holiday, we dont think we are 'special' at all and we dont ruin anyone's fun, I dont spend anytime wondering if people are looking at us and thinking we are this or that, I am just a mum having fun on holiday and including anyone who wants to join in, and respecting the rights of everyone else to use the pool however they want to.

I doubt that hotels make rules because of me, I expect they make rules to recognise that everyone likes to do different things on holiday, so they work hard to provide spaces where everyone can relax and have fun.

On our last holiday there was an over 16 infinity pool where no toys or kids were allowed, and it was lovely and peaceful there. There was an under 10s family pool, a waterslide pool, an indoor swimming lane pool and an outdoor fun pool with waves where shock horror ball games were encouraged - the hotel even provided water guns, balls and inflatables so clearly that was the intended use of the pool.

I dont give a damn about you and your judgy views tbh, you come across as very 'extra' and if anyone thinks they are 'special' in this conversation it isnt me! 🤣🤣

You do you, love and I'll do the same. Hopefully we never encounter one another on holiday, we dont spund like each other's cup of tea and that's ok - variety is the spice of life.

that's a lot to say and a lot of feelings about my post if you don't "give a damn about me" 😂

I doubt it will give you any manners or respect for others, but we never know. Maybe it will and it will help the poor sods stuck in the same resort as you, who knows.

🤣🤣 I feel slightly bad that this actually made me laugh. Are you always this judgemental and rude to strangers or am I just 'special' 😉

I am responding to you on a thread, its ok to have different views, you know.

You dont know me, I have great manners and great holidays, I dont feel miserable or unhappy on my holidays at all as I am completely comfortable living and letting live. The other 'poor sods' I meet on holidays have become friends that have translated into connections post holiday too, so i think they're ok 😂

I feel sorry for you that you are so invested in others following rules that you think should exist but dont actually, that it ruins your enjoyment of your holiday.

There are plenty of quieter resorts where ball games aren't encouraged, or villas or resorts with quieter pools. I genuinely hope you manage to book one of those so your holiday isnt ruined by people following the rules and having fun on their holiday. Have a great weekend, happy to agree to disagree now.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 11/07/2026 15:17

Depends. We've been on holiday where balls have been allowed and an entire pool full of people were all playing catch with a yahoo? Ball. It was great, broke the ice, kids and adults made friends. Same pool same ball diffrent day a group of huge pissed up Canadians took it too far, whacked dd in the back of her head hard. That was the end of that.

ZanyPoet · 11/07/2026 16:28

I love how it goes from the OP being in your normal hotel pool annoyed by balls thrown into people's face

to some posters playing balls in pools where the hotels specifically asked them to play with balls because 😂😂

We all know that rude CF are always right, otherwise they wouldn't be the rude inconvenience they are would they? Shame when they ruin other people's holiday, sporty or "non-sporty" 😂😂

Lilypad789 · 11/07/2026 19:53

I hadn’t actually thought about it before. It is a bit anti social I suppose. Then again, I just think it’s part and parcel of a family holiday in a family resort so if it’s not for you then maybe a villa / quieter resort is a better idea next time.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 12/07/2026 06:08

I’m with you @hugasaurus
we are in a hotel with a pool and I find it really antisocial to be constantly slamming a ball about.
Why do fully grown adults feel the need?
This is the first time we have been on a package holiday for years, we usually go to our villa in Turkey but fancied a change. Maybe I’m just used to the peace and quiet but I find others very selfish when they don’t think of others around them.

WonderingWanda · 12/07/2026 06:10

I agree op, it can sometimes be a bit antisocial. Especially when a group decide to spread to all corners of the pool and lob a rugby ball at each other so you feel like you can't swim about.

Ineffable23 · 12/07/2026 06:18

I don't understand why people seem to have lost the ability to recognise that you should consider others before you do things.

Playing ball in a pool where there's no one else about? Not inconsiderate, carry on. Playing ball in a massive pool where there's loads of room and the balls can be avoided with reasonable ease? Also fine. Playing ball in a pool where it's taking up a big chunk of the pool and splashing other people and you keep going outside your zone so people are at risk of being hit? Dick move, don't do it.

You can repeat the same process for playing loud music in your house, or why it's unacceptable to set out a large picnic rug on a tube train etc etc.

Editing: maybe they never had that ability but I do think this is getting worse as we move to a more individualistic society.

Overthehillmum63 · 12/07/2026 06:29

Absolutely agree. If you want to chuck a ball around get out the pool!

itsgettingweird · 12/07/2026 06:29

ToKittyornottoKitty · 10/07/2026 12:36

Not selfish, but people can only have fun near you in the way you prefer 😅 alternatively if you aren’t tolerant of other people in public spaces then get your own villa and private pool.

But where do we draw the line with this?

Some people’s idea of fun might be throwing paint around in the pedestrian area of a shopping centre.

Does their idea of fun trump others opinions here?

personally I have no problem with balls if they are inflatable ones or a soft one (thinner plastic football) and it’s being used for volleyball for example. But I’ve been at pools whereby you have 4/6 large blokes spread out and lobbing tennis balls towards each other as hard as possible and that creates danger.

it’s easier to say no balls than police the type of game. I actually thinknifnpeoplensomemsone personal sensible responsibility for how they played around others we’d need less rules.
