To hate people chucking balls around in pools?

Just pondering from my sunbed!

No issues with inflatables but I really hate people throwing balls about in pools. It feels really antisocial. I got clocked in the face by some kids chucking one about earlier and it knocked my sunglasses off, my 4yo got walloped in the back of head with one earlier with grown-ups as part of the game and was a bit upset,

Fortunately it turns out they are actually banned in this pool so once a lifeguard who actually cared turned up, it stopped, but I felt quite annoyed about it because it takes up huge swathes of the pool that you can’t go in lest you get whacked in the face or just be in the middle of someone else’s game.

I would never do it. If you do, do you consider the fact other people might get hit by the ball or that you’re taking up a lot of space?

I'm with you. I can guarantee that if a ball is flying around, it'll hit me. I hate them. No need for them in a pool. The water should be enough to amuse yourself.

Pistachiocake · 10/07/2026 14:37

No-people with certain disabilities could really suffer. Eg someone who had had an eye OP but is cleared to swim might be fine if left to swim in peace, but not with splashing right next to them! I taught my kids never to jump/splash people from a very young age-people with certain types of hearing implants could find they won't work if they get wet (again, as with the eye op, normal swimming is fine). So even my kids understand that you don't risk making a disability far worse with selfish and entitled behaviour.
Even Kevin in Home Alone 2 had the manners to ask before making a big splash, potentially upsetting other pool users!

But to be fair, you're trying to stop the ball-throwers enjoying the pool, too. People have different ideas of what constitutes fun. I agree with the PP who said that of course if there's a "no ball games" rule then they shouldn't do it, but generally speaking I don't see why one person's preference for quiet, sedate swimming should automatically take precedence over another person's preference for ball games.

Ball games can happen on dry land.

Swimming is limited to the pool.

ZanyPoet · 10/07/2026 14:32

because someone quiet enjoyment is having no impact on the other one?

It has nothing to do with preference, but everything to do with what makes a difference for others.

Yes, but if we start thinking like that then nobody would be allowed to do anything. No ball games in parks because the ball might hit a parent trying to teach their child how to ride a bike. No outdoor theatres or music events because the noise might disturb someone trying to quietly read a book in the next field. No dogs off lead in the woods because the barking might upset some children having a picnic. It could just go on and on. When we share spaces, we have to accept that we won't always get our way.

It's just about giving some consideration and room to other people.

If you're hogging the space, you're probably the arsehole.

That's right, but the reverse is not true. I.e. just because swimming can only be done in the pool, that doesn't mean that the pool is only for swimming.

I completely agree. Taking up the whole pool is arseholery. But I disagree that playing ball games in a pool is always unreasonable.

So predictable the way threads like this always attract cries of 'miserable' from people who prioritise their 'right to fun' over the comfort of other people. 🙄

OonaStubbs · 10/07/2026 14:49

Public swimming pools are no place for balls, they should be banned.

No, but if the pool is busy and small, then people who want to play ballgames should let the people who want to swim, swim.

Because they can get out of the pool and play their game somewhere else.

RoseOliviaAu · 10/07/2026 14:52

Unfortunately it’s incredibly fun! I spent 4 hours playing pool volleyball last month and it was the highlight of the trip.

You hate balls leaving the pool and hitting you in the face, that’s a different thing.

Sure, or take turns. So that the people who want to play e.g. pool volleyball can also get a turn.

Dunno, North Korea? 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 Not the kind of world I want to live in.

I'm sure some people would like to live in a world full of energy drinks, vaping, and hardcore pornography. I personally prefer a little bit of order.

It's not really fair in terms of turns though, is it?

Taking turns means swimmers not being able to do the thing they want at all half the time
versus
ball players being able to do the thing they want to do all the time but not quite as wet as they want to be half the time. 😂

I think swimmers should get priority.

I am genuinely not following why it wouldn't be fair to take turns. It's not for swimmers to tell ball players that they should view playing on land as exactly the same as playing in water (it's not, it's a completely different game) - if the pool is genuinely so small that sectioning off areas isn't possible, then turn taking is literally the only fair way left.

Right, but you're not the only person in the world, so different wants often need to be balanced. No idea what energy drinks have got to do with anything though, sorry 😂

not really, parks are big enough that a ball game doesn't impact others.
Ball game in the picnic area on the other hand? Not ok

No outdoor theatres or music events
hosted in places known for these events? Not the same as a sudden music event in a quiet town square?

Otherwise that means I can just let my kids play water rugby in and around the pool? That is their peak idea of enjoyment. If everybody can enjoy themselves, why not, and by definition it can ONLY be done around a pool, so surely that's ok?

while players can play with balls on land - and really don't need a pool, unless it's water polo?😂

The SWIMMING pool is designed for.. people to be in the water, I won't dare saying "swimming". Play with your ball away from people's face, and go in the pool to cool down. It's not that hard.

Well no, parks come in lots of different sizes. As do town squares and woods and swimming pools. When we are forced into sharing those spaces, we sometimes need to accept that others may use them differently from us. We still have to be courteous to others, as I've said: I said that taking up the entire thing would be unreasonable, and I said that people should follow whatever rules are in place. I think it goes without saying that nobody should hurt anyone or act dangerously. But a ball game in a pool is not inherently unreasonable, again, as long as it's not taking up the whole thing, being played dangerously, etc etc. I've no idea what water rugby is, sorry.

I will dare to say it: the swimming pool is for swimming. If you are not there to swim, you are a hindrance to those who wish to use a pool for its intended purpose. You wouldn't throw a ball around at the opera, or at a restaurant, or at a spa - why should a swimming pool be any different?

If it is your own swimming pool, then go right ahead and fill it with dog muck and knives for all I care. But in public? Swim, or get out of the way.

I don't think I said swimmers can swim on land, did I? I think I've made my point pretty clear but please correct me if I'm wrong. Hotel pools are not only for swimming.

it's either playing rugby IN the pool (ball game with a rugby ball, it's not quiet or splash free😂)
or a more organised rugby game where you score by jumping IN the pool.

Neither are suitable. They're not dangerous, just would ruin the peace of anyone not involved in the chaos.

YANBU just another example of inconsiderate people with no manners. Same with people blaring
music , vaping in your face etc
