To love it when colleagues bring their dogs to work and want them to do it more often?

I work in a factory and people sometimes bring their dogs in (not on the factory floor of course but in the office side or other rooms where they can safely be - today there's two in the women's shower room) and I love it so much as do many others. But I suppose there's a chance there's some people in the building that don't like dogs/scared of them/are allergic so don't like it, though no one has complained yet.

Most of the factory is on holiday this month so I am strongly encouraging people to bring dogs in while its quiet and less people to potentially be bothered, so I can get some canine cuddles when I need a break from work.

I'm allergic so would hate this. Also had a family member been bitten by a dog and required hospital treatment.

ProfessorGarlick · Today 07:57

I don't mind dogs but I really hate them being brought in to work so I'd be one of the silent people annoyed at this but not saying anything.

I'm glad I don't work there! Dogs in a shower room?!

MidnightPatrol · Today 07:58

I enjoy visiting dogs too OP!

Always very happy to see a dog in the office.

Sartre · Today 07:58

I don’t know how I’d feel about this. Some dogs are ok but I don’t like the smell and I absolutely hate jumpy dogs.

SummitWrong · Today 07:58

Love a dog day in the office. We have regular canine visitors. I leave mine at home because he likes to bark at the big boss

olympicsrock · Today 08:00

No thanks !

JustKeepSwimmingJust · Today 08:00

I hate it, and when junior would have been too intimidated to point out that I’m mildly allergic and rather scared.

yanbu to enjoy it, but in most workplaces, yabu to encourage it

Quite. Beyond ridiculous.

Is that fair on the dogs though to be in a noisy factory all day with strangers at them and not be able to run around just so adults can have "canine cuddles"

Agreed.

It's not fair on staff who don't like or want animals in the workplace, and it's not fair on the animals.

ovals · Today 08:06

I’d be over the moon but many wouldn’t.

Agreed. I’d be one of the people silently seething at your intolerable selfishness.

When DH was overseas he actively encouraged colleagues to bring in their dogs. Always said it was the one of the things that kept him going as he missed our dogs so much 😊 when they went out for external meetings they’d leave the dogs in the office in the aircon. And for parties and events he encouraged them as well as lots of their contacts loved dogs.

We have an office cat. I hate it. Pisses all over the office and doesn’t even deal with the mice

MN is full of posters with issue with dogs. My experience is totally different. Whether work, new friends, pubs, etc... my experience has always been that people love dogs even when they don't have one themselves.

I'm always very conscious that people have a right not to like and want dogs around them, but ever single time I've enquired with absolute openness to people voicing their discomfort about my dog, I get the absolute opposite.

I have one friend scared of dogs following her being bitten by one as a child. So understandable. Even she tries really hard with her friends' dog and is now happy to be around and pet mine. She says it has helped her a lot dealing with her fear.

HouseHouseHouse7 · Today 08:08

I love dogs and grew up with dogs in the household but I feel that this plan would be so difficult for colleagues who are allergic or nervous.
I think that everyone would need to agree (without feeling coerced) and it would have to be clear in future job descriptions that the place is dog-friendly so that candidates l can decide whether to apply.

RaraRachael · Today 08:09

I hate dogs being everywhere. I don't dislike dogs but don't want them in every shop and cafe I go into.

My boss used to bring her dog in and took it as a personal insult if some of us didn't make a fuss over it.

There were even some players at Wimbledon complaining that they couldn't bring their dogs. It's a tennis tournament not a dog show FFS.

I love dogs.

I just don't want them in the workplace.

closureatlast · Today 08:10

Just why??

Elbowpatch · Today 08:11

No thanks. I can only imagine the slobber in this weather.

Although in Turkey it seems very common to have cats wandering around the workplace.

backformoreofthesame · Today 08:11

1/3 of households have dogs
imagine if they all came in - the dog fights the could result

and people who don’t like dogs often don’t speak out because it’s seen as weak or strange

Theeyeballsinthesky · Today 08:11

why stop at dogs? How about people bring in their cats? Why not gerbils, rabbits, tortoises? Pet tarantulas perhaps?

or perhaps we could agree as adults that pets don't belong on offices

Mycatmax · Today 08:12

I love it too. I wfh all the time now as employer closed our regional offices after COVID. When they were open we were able to bring dogs in and it was so nice.

I don't love dogs. I tolerate them when I have to. I have no interest in them, having "canine cuddles" or interacting with them in any way. The job of a responsible owner is to respect that and keep their animal out of my personal space. And to train their animal so it can be left at home (or paying for someone to look after it) rather than being taken into the showers at work, ffs.

Our GP used to have a lovely dog in his clinic. Loved it. Those that didnt went to the other dogless GPs.
Nothing makes me happier than a friendly office dog. I have been bitten a few times by dogs as a child so am wary of a few types of dog. But a well trained friendly dog is a thing of joy.
Sadly Im really allergic to cats though so have to avoid cats in cafes.
