To love it when colleagues bring their dogs to work and want them to do it more often?

I work in a factory and people sometimes bring their dogs in (not on the factory floor of course but in the office side or other rooms where they can safely be - today there's two in the women's shower room) and I love it so much as do many others. But I suppose there's a chance there's some people in the building that don't like dogs/scared of them/are allergic so don't like it, though no one has complained yet.

Most of the factory is on holiday this month so I am strongly encouraging people to bring dogs in while its quiet and less people to potentially be bothered, so I can get some canine cuddles when I need a break from work.

Nope, it’s a workplace not Doggy Day Care - this is another annoying hangover from Covid. However…cats are another story.

sleepwouldbenice · Yesterday 11:41

I adore dogs!!
But no, too distracting plus not everyone likes dogs and some are allergic?

HappyAsASandboy · Yesterday 11:57

I don’t mind dogs really, but I wouldn’t like them to be in my work building. Hair, smell, distraction ….. just not necessary IMO.

I also don’t like dogs in cafes, libraries, shops …. leave them at home or outside!

Terfarina · Yesterday 14:18

Extra work for cleaners, potential risk to people mowing lawns outside of getting splattered in poo. Some people look after their dos well, others stink. They always seem to want to sniff crotches and owners rarely seem to get that not everyone wants to be covered in their slobber and hair. No thanks.

Cue the MN dog haters!

MN is full of posters with issue with dogs. My experience is totally different. Whether work, new friends, pubs, etc... my experience has always been that people love dogs even when they don't have one themselves.

I'm always very conscious that people have a right not to like and want dogs around them, but ever single time I've enquired with absolute openness to people voicing their discomfort about my dog, I get the absolute opposite.

I have one friend scared of dogs following her being bitten by one as a child. So understandable. Even she tries really hard with her friends' dog and is now happy to be around and pet mine. She says it has helped her a lot dealing with her fear.

I've always hated dogs. I'm not scared of them and not allergic. Just can't stand the smell and the slobber and when they jump up it's fucking infuriating. And then the idiot owner says he's just friendly that's all🙄 well I'm not friendly, especially to dogs so keep it the fuck away from me. I don't get how dog owners can't understand that not everyone loves their fur baby🙄

LostInTheDream · Yesterday 14:56

I would absolutely love this.

But I think in a large office situation it would be hard to manage and I think would need a designated floor.

I think in offices where employers struggle to get people to attend in person then this would be a good motivator, whether it's because doggy daycare is expensive or you just really want to see some sweet dogs

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · Yesterday 15:05

I'd rather have a cat lying across my keyboard.

DeathMetalMum · Yesterday 15:06

No thanks. Not appropriate at all in the workplace. Just like you wouldn't bring your DC into work and leave them in the shower room.

DeathMetalMum · Yesterday 15:08

Everyone saying cue the MN dog haters. You do realise everyone likes different things. It's not just on Mumsnet that people don't like dogs.

People would probably like dogs more if owner's didn't push them in everyone's faces all the time and trained them to keep away from other people.

Cue the MN dog haters!

if you like dogs or not is irrelevant
it completely inappropriate for a workplace environment

FunkyFringe · Yesterday 15:27

I can’t think of anything worse. I’d refuse to come in.

Spidey66 · Yesterday 15:34

I’d love it!

I don't love dogs. I tolerate them when I have to. I have no interest in them, having "canine cuddles" or interacting with them in any way. The job of a responsible owner is to respect that and keep their animal out of my personal space. And to train their animal so it can be left at home (or paying for someone to look after it) rather than being taken into the showers at work, ffs.

This! Absolutely this with millions of brass bells on. Having dogs is a lifestyle choice which should not be inflicted on those who don't want it.

Not sure if it was the same for everyone but it was made clear to me at the interview stage that it's a dog friendly workplace as the boss's dogs were at the interview and I was asked if I'm OK with dogs as they are there every day the boss is there. Assuming this is the same for everyone else that comes for an interview then they know what they're getting into it if they take the job.

If the dogs are non-negotiable then it should be made clear in the job advert, not at interview stage. By that point applicants have potentially spent hours of time on the application and interview prep, and money on an outfit/travel/time off work - so what can they possibly say when put on the spot like that? It’s not fair at all.

BiteSizedLife · Yesterday 15:54

@OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon was this abroad? I thought in the UK dogs were not permitted in supermarkets? or do you mean farm shops?

I also think that online with strangers it is easier to be honest. If you have a real life friend who is obsessed with her animal you just steer the conversation in another direction rather than being brutally honest and telling her that you strongly dislike her barky, smelly, poorly-trained "furbaby".

Pistachiocake · Yesterday 15:59

I'd love it. And it's less smelly than when people bring babies in, especially when they don't change them.
Actually, would only love toilet trained dogs!

Who the fuck wants to encounter a dog in the shower facility? Bonkers.

No thanks !

Yes please

SerafinasGoose · Yesterday 16:03

I'm sick and tired of dogs being brought absolutely everywhere. People do have allegies, and not everyone likes them.

I say this as someone who has been fond of dogs all my life (though I'm really more of a cat and horse person). But the attitude of some owners, particularly since COVID, has become ridiculous.

There's really no need for them to be taken everywhere. Workplaces, shops and restaurant are not places for dogs.

Monty36 · Yesterday 16:08

Thankfully for the first time in a long time I saw a hotel who said that they were not dog friendly. Hurrah ! I don’t want to stay at a kennel.
They used to be but have had to withdraw this option.
I don’t hate dogs ( dislike some very large or very scary ones), but I don’t want them everywhere.
We will be booking with this hotel.

No one actually uses the showers, we just use the room to dry washing (work clothes)sometimes

My (tiny) dog has always been an office dog, since he was a puppy. He stays by my side, follows me in meetings and doesn't bark. On the rare occasions I didn't have him with me, my colleagues were not happy.
It's very common in my industry, in London. There are other dogs in our co-working space and it's just lovely, no drama at all.

YankSplaining · Yesterday 16:44

I’m not surprised no one’s complained yet. No one wants to be cast as the big baddie who “hates” dogs.

I wouldn’t want a dog brought into a workplace unnecessarily. I don’t dislike dogs, but I’m not particularly fond of them, and I wouldn’t like the social pressure of being expected to respond positively. “Have you seen so-and-so’s dog? Oh, you should – he’s just right in that room! Such a sweetheart!”
