To love it when colleagues bring their dogs to work and want them to do it more often?

I work in a factory and people sometimes bring their dogs in (not on the factory floor of course but in the office side or other rooms where they can safely be - today there's two in the women's shower room) and I love it so much as do many others. But I suppose there's a chance there's some people in the building that don't like dogs/scared of them/are allergic so don't like it, though no one has complained yet.

Most of the factory is on holiday this month so I am strongly encouraging people to bring dogs in while its quiet and less people to potentially be bothered, so I can get some canine cuddles when I need a break from work.

But that’s not manufacturing…

OK, and?

Hoppinggreen · Yesterday 10:39

I would love it but I appreciate not everybody would and it could be a distraction when you are supposed to be working
Also in a factory there might be H&S considerations
And I doubt Ddog would enjoy it much either

I didn't think op was talking about assistance dogs?

I’m just highlighting the fact that it’s impossible to avoid dogs in the workplace 🤷‍♀️

I was a bit sick in my mouth at ”canine cuddles”.

Not that keen on dogs at work but tolerable if they don’t bark. But keeping them in a shower room all day doesn’t seem very nice for them either.

They're not in there all day, been outside for a run about a few times, to one of the break rooms when we're having our breaks, and hopefully they can go in the room with the woman that likes taking care of visiting dogs.

Canine cuddles is very cringe but I love dogs so much but don't have my own to cuddle.

I am allergic to dogs and they set my asthma off so I wouldn’t like this

The dogs aren't usually alone, they're usually either in the office side or in a closed room with a woman that loves looking after dogs but she isn't able to this morning which is why they are in the showers.

This is what I mean - no one to look after your dogs, put them in the women's showers!! Where the hell is that logic coming from? It serves not the dogs nor the women. People need to leave them at home and pay a dogwalker ffs.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · Yesterday 10:44

No.

I have 3 dogs, and would only consider taking them to work in a dog related job i.e. pet shop / dog groomers / animal rescue.

CitizenZ · Yesterday 10:44

I love dogs. In my ideal world they would be everywhere all the time. They're far better than people.

I envisioned food for some reason 😜

Hah no! I imagine that would break food hygiene rules!

I would complain I'm scared of dogs and would be on edge all day I would hate it. Though I know lots of people who wouldn't want to complain incase it caused problems for them.

I think the big problem is who polices who's dog is well behaved enough. I know people with dogs who bark a lot and say oh he's just saying hello or jump all over you and say oh he just loves cuddles. Whereas other people have dogs who will happily sit by his side all day. Will it become management job to police it or do you leave it down to no ones complaining it must be fine?

My mums tiny dog is super friendly and small so she feels it's fine for her to walk up to anyone as the dog is tiny and just wants petted it would be very awkward to say why you don't want her there as technically she's not causing a problem but I find it annoying having her stare at me for attention all the time.

Ahoa · Yesterday 10:48

I like dogs, but there are inappropriate places for them to be, in the shower of a factory is definitely inappropriate. My GP often has his dog in which again why, get some proper dog care that isn’t the workplace.
it’s unfair on people who don’t like them.

Magicpaintbrush · Yesterday 10:49

I would love this - but appreciate that others wouldn't.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · Yesterday 10:51

and I don't like dogs in supermarkets !

all pretense of the dog being an actual working animal go out the window these days, so many customers just blatantly bring the dog in - either on a lead ( or in a dog buggy - I don't mind the dog buggy or on the owners knee in a wheelchair which I don't mind either as the dog is not on the floor)
or even worse in the supermarkets trolly !!!

If I wasn't OK with dogs I wouldn't have taken the job though, so that's better than the dogs being a surprise after you've taken the job and quit your previous one.

You’ve answered your own question.

People are made aware of the dogs before they accept the job and so there isn’t going to be any complaints.

Less than 1% of the population have an assistance dog. I have been working for 35 years now and never come across one. OF COURSE if someone has a medical need that trumps my allergies. We'd need to have a conversation - I'd move offices or offset days in or something - but I would never, ever suggest the dog shouldn't come to their workplace. That would be hugely wrong.

That is vastly different from someone leaving their poor dog in a shower room at work for 8 hours. I can't even see how this is beneficial for the dogs themselves.

How can I get an office job that consists of looking after other people's dogs please ?

MrsVBS · Yesterday 11:19

Why do people who like dogs always assume everyone else does too. I couldn’t think of anything worse going to work and having dogs there.

Jumbaree · Yesterday 11:20

I’d be really cheesed off to have applied for a job only later to find at interview that its a dog friendly office. Any weird proclivities should be on the advert to give a heads up to people thinking of applying.

By the way the office is dog friendly.
By the way the office listens to Steps greatest hits all day long
By the way we all cross dress on Fridays.

that sort of thing.

Slightyamusedandsilly · Yesterday 11:23

LOVE dogs at work. I'm always happy to see an animal (note, NOT reptiles). Much more so than people.

paltandsepper · Yesterday 11:23

I'd love this too. I used to work somewhere it happened occasionally, and I used to voluteer with kids in care and they all always wanted me to take my dogs to visits. Smile
I WFH now, so not happening unless my own dog counts!

RhosynCymru · Yesterday 11:31

One of my managers joked that we should have a permanent “therapy “ dog at our workplace as we all seem dog obsessed!

Assistance dogs and guide dogs fine. But general dogs no. Not in the workplace. Unless your employer is some sort of doggy environment.
And you know it before you join.Bringing in a dog friendly workplace by trying to influence it to be so is something else.

That's fair, putting in the job advert that dog's are present would be a good idea. Though most people haven't come to work here after seeing an advert but through word of mouth - people that work here recommend it to friends who then call and ask if there's any jobs available.

I was brought up with dogs, some of them very happy working dogs but can’t stand them now - can’t go anywhere but dogs are there, and the expectation that everyone will ooo and aaah over it as if it’s a new baby.
Thrres something missing from a lot of people’s lives. Have a dog to love but it’s your dog, keep it to yourself.
