AIBU to hope the USA crash out the World Cup because of this FIFA corruption?

I'm no fan of Trump, but until this red card nonsense I hoped the USA would do well. I always think it's good when the tournament hosts do well.
But now it's come out that Trump personally called FIFA to get the red card removed? Absolute joke. It’s blatant corruption. I really hope Belgium absolutely humiliate them.

I think whether it should have been a red card isn't the main point. There are plenty of decisions that could be challenged. That's just the nature of the game.

Utter disgrace, hoping Belgium find the form they undoubtedly have and sweep
the US aside, though Donald’s probably already asked his pal to make sure the ref uses his red card against a few Belgian players, along with some from France, Argentina and the UK, just to make sure it’s all fair of course

geminicancerean · 06/07/2026 18:39

There’s nothing to stop the other teams from taking a stand, they could refuse to play or make a gesture of protest such as covering the visible FIFA logos with their training kit. Or a different gesture of protest. People used to do things like that in the past, everybody seems to roll over, take it and complain long after the event these days.

Before VAR apparently one of the best ways to wangle a match, apart from finding a willing bod to throw a game, get themselves sent off, injure another player etc was to bribe the linesman.
Everyone would look at the refs decisions but often ignored those of the linesman. And of course bet heavily on what would occur !
I guess that may have transferred to bribe the VAR man now.

If they win it’ll be forever tarnished so surely for them it’s not worth it?

In what world was USA ever going to win this World Cup? Have you watched any of the tournament?

Monty36 · 06/07/2026 18:43

I doubt the USA will win.
But if someone was wanting to gain money on the World Cup they might do it through bribes, betting and of course managing the price hike of tickets.

DontBuyAnotherBook · 06/07/2026 17:56

Maybe this is why America should not be hosting it. Half of them don't even understand the rules.

Whereas every single Russian and Qatari understands the rules perfectly.

MaidOfSteel · 06/07/2026 18:56

FIFA really have brought the game into disrepute. Infantino should hang his head in shame.

I’ll be cheering Belgium on very loudly.

Another thing. The US is hosting the next summer Olympic Games. I can’t bear to think about how they will be corrupted.

ilovesooty · 06/07/2026 19:09

The USA is planning to bid to host the 2038 WC.

FionasFarmyard · 06/07/2026 19:10

Best summing up “FIFA really have brought the game into disrepute” @MaidOfSteel

I don't think they were super popular choices either.

FruAashild · 06/07/2026 20:10

Trump is corrupt. FIFA is corrupt. And now they've put the US manager and Balogun (who lets not forget is actually British and only has the right to play for the US by an accident of birth) in an impossible situation. Balogun is the US's best player but letting him play puts him in a dreadful situation when he returns to Europe for next year's Ligue 1 in France. He'll be as unpopular as Beckham was after his WC98 red card. Poor man.

Whereas every single Russian and Qatari understands the rules perfectly.

Many people voiced their concerns about corruption for those choices as well.

But even those nations weren't doing it in plain sight during the tournament.

It's a shame for the USA players and their fans, they didn't ask for any of this. Blame Trump and FIFA.

I assume op that you'll be editing your op to Include Portugal now that you're aware?

I think it’s only a few minutes after you post that you are allowed to edit. I think the USA incident has more publicity as a head of state has admitted to interference while with Ronaldo it’s not so clear if pressure was applied or it was just a benefit to being a super star. People have pointed out that referees are more lenient on Messi for example. None of it is good and fair play should apply to all.

I doubt very much that they care!

midlifeattheoasis · 06/07/2026 21:14

I’m astonished it’s happened too. I also wouldn’t trust that the ref on USA’s hasn’t been bribed

midlifeattheoasis · 06/07/2026 21:28

The ref in USA’s next match I meant to say

I think people will definitely be watching the officiating closely.

Ref and officials will have been bought off. Trump wants the cup, he will be determined to get it by hook or crook.

If the ref in the Paraguay v France match is anything to go by, they have def had a massive brown envelope bung!

I’m sure FIFA will award the yanks the “inaugural Peace World Cup”.

Wauwinet · 06/07/2026 17:40

Americans don’t really care about football and most of them didn’t seem to know that they had a team in the World Cup. They know that they won’t win, don’t expect to win, and they don’t think that they will beat Belgium but are pleased with how far their team went. I live in the States and watching Americans happily cheer on all of the teams has been really lovely to see.

I don’t think nastiness towards them is called for. It is, after all, merely a game.

I doubt that anyone wants to see nastiness towards the US team.

It’s Trump (nuff sed) and the sheer blatant corruption of FIFA that we all have issues with.

TonTonMacoute · 06/07/2026 22:02

I think Trump has shat on his own WC from a great height.

I'm not really interested in football, but I think that there has been so much positive stuff that has come out of it - the Americans loving the fans, the fans making such a good impression and everyone having a great time.

Trump is so loathsome he has sullied it by this cheating, and it just shows how vile and corrupt the people who run sport are.

MySneakyLion · 06/07/2026 22:16

And yeah I hope Belgium absolutely hammer them.

TheHateIsNotGood · 06/07/2026 22:40

FIFA = FIXING IT FOR AMERICA but they're going Toulouse and Goodbye. I'm now a Belgium fan for at least 1 match.

My main thought is how are the England fans attending the match against Norway going to come up with a suitable pisstake to the 'Viking Rowing'. I suggest references to the Battle of Edington c.878, flags displaying a White Wyvern (a 2-legged dragon) and some 'battle horns'.

Vitrolinsanity · 06/07/2026 22:44

Come on the Belgians. Bury the cheating shitbags.
