AIBU to hope the USA crash out the World Cup because of this FIFA corruption?

I'm no fan of Trump, but until this red card nonsense I hoped the USA would do well. I always think it's good when the tournament hosts do well.
But now it's come out that Trump personally called FIFA to get the red card removed? Absolute joke. It’s blatant corruption. I really hope Belgium absolutely humiliate them.

I think whether it should have been a red card isn't the main point. There are plenty of decisions that could be challenged. That's just the nature of the game.

I really hope Belgium give the yanks a battering
and the crowd jeer every American touch of the ball

I’m not sure that is entirely fair to the team though. Or Balogun. Presumably, it had nothing to do with them. I almost hesitate to say it but it’s not really the Orange one’s fault either - we all know what he’s like, and he can ask but he should have been told a firm no.
This is all on FIFA, surely? And yes to hoping that the team have integrity and do not play him.

eta: if they do though, they deserve all they get.

Edited

I take your point, although if the player had any honour he would refuse to play.

He can't influence a corrupt dictator or the head of FIFA but he can choose his own actions.

Going "on strike" would help a little bit to mend the tattered and destroyed reputation of the US in general.

Wauwinet · 06/07/2026 17:40

Americans don’t really care about football and most of them didn’t seem to know that they had a team in the World Cup. They know that they won’t win, don’t expect to win, and they don’t think that they will beat Belgium but are pleased with how far their team went. I live in the States and watching Americans happily cheer on all of the teams has been really lovely to see.

I don’t think nastiness towards them is called for. It is, after all, merely a game.

AggroPotato · 06/07/2026 17:42

Hard agree.

GO BELGIUM! 🇧🇪

SpottyAlpaca · 06/07/2026 17:43

YANBU. I hope Belgium win 5-0 tonight.

This case demonstrates yet again that FIFA is institutionally corrupt from top to bottom. When Sepp Blatter, of all people, is occupying the moral high ground & criticising the cancellation of Balogun’s red card it shows how bad things are.

A minor illness would be the most diplomatic solution I suppose, though not exactly satisfactory.

Agree Wauwinet. It has been a really lovely time - untouched by trump - with fans from all over the world getting on really well with locals (I'm in Boston and it was a lovefest with the Scots) and everyone feeling good about how far US got etc. while laughing at the idea of us winning it.

I have yet to see evidence that the US team asked for Trump to corruptly ask FIFA to do anything - and the NYT is reporting on this a lot - and the reaction here from americans has been universally condemnatory of trump - and fifa. And lets not forget Trump could have done his worst and nothing would have happened if FIFA wasn't horribly corrupt so boo them if you are also booing the americans (and presumably the portuguese).

Cobrakainerd · 06/07/2026 17:46

Ref and officials will have been bought off. Trump wants the cup, he will be determined to get it by hook or crook.

If people are angry at America it is because they are angry with Americans because of the man they voted into power.

Who is causing chaos in the world. Who has made billions personally on crypto. Something no President arguably should be able to do. With Crypto you cannot see who you are getting money to and from. Very worrying indeed. And who has made money on knowing when he will lift tariffs and when not.

FIFA are known to be corrupt. The corruption happened in Qatar.

People are angry against corruption.

There are too many Americans to be angry at them all ! But it is a form of feedback they may want to reflect on.

WildLeader · 06/07/2026 17:47

This is undermining all football. It’s outrageous.

I too hope the coach benches this guy. Team USA needs to be expelled from international competition.

ExtraOnions · 06/07/2026 17:48

They need booing whenever they touch the ball

CosyDenimShark · 06/07/2026 17:49

I hope Belgium thrash them with a hat trick from Trossard!
If I was Balogun, I would refuse to play, I'd be so embarrassed!
It's a disgrace.

DontBuyAnotherBook · 06/07/2026 17:49

I have a feeling that player will score unfortunately.

CoastalCalm · 06/07/2026 17:49

No I totally agree

ModernV · 06/07/2026 17:50

I don't get all the hate and vitriol directed at the team. They personally weren't involved with the decision and off course their manager will play the best team he can (as would any coach in this position). Hate Trump, Fifa, go for it but the players?

Winefride · 06/07/2026 17:51

Yes, because all teams should "crash out" because all sports are rigged and corrupt. Sorry to break it to you. No need to single out Americans.

NemoNerd · 06/07/2026 17:52

Imagine Balogan plays a pivotal part in winning against Belgium and (probably) France… two matches he should have missed… there will be an OUTCRY. I cannot imagine France agreeing to play USA when the rules have been broken in USA’s favour already,

I really don’t understand why FIFA thought why they’d get away with this. The fans will go beserk, and rightly so.

It totally changes the dynamics of World Cup game strategy if teams know it’s possible to do a dirty tackle in an important match and get away with it. So now what - will we have to revisit all the red cards awarded and question why those players werent allowed to play the next two matches after all?

Trump got involved when no politician should get involved. Politics doesn't belong to football. It certainly confirms the well held opinion that FIFA are corrupt.

It's not nastiness against them, it's against the blatant corruption. Like I said before this drama I wanted them to do well. Trump said in front of the media that he called in about the red card and had the decision overturned. That's not how it is supposed to work.

I actually think the USA could beat Belgium. Belgium have great players, although many past their best and they often underperform. I put a small bet on the USA to win before all this drama, so I guess I win either way😂

He gets involved because he's probably invested just like the Royal Family and various celebrities. That should be the big "clue" that the game is rigged.

That’s a fair point. I can’t imagine Pochettino would have asked Trump to do this. If the American team do get booed in Seattle tonight, the boos will be for Trump (who is a disgrace to a great country) & Infantino (who is a corrupt crook), not the players.

fashionqueen0123 · 06/07/2026 17:55

How was this allowed to happen!!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 06/07/2026 17:55

Trump didn’t understand that after a player receives a red card, they are banned for the next match. He said it wasn’t fair if your best player cannot play! It’s unbelievably crass and, frankly, nothing to do with him. Eufa are furious and Belgium too. Infantino is awful but will get back into FIFA leadership unopposed. The punishment is clear to all but maybe KC3 could have a word with infantino about Jarell? You never know!
I don’t think this is anything to do with Poch or the American players who obviously didn’t ask for special treatment. They understand the rules.

Well, do some research. Billionaires don't invest to lose.
