AIBU to think King Charles comes across as a really crap dad?

I mean really, this is just pathetic. No one is believing that KC couldn’t find a spare bed for his son. AIBU to think that as the parent KC needs to get a grip and grow up instead of just fuelling the drama?

Buckingham Palace says Prince Harry will not stay at palace

Royal sources say the Duke of Sussex had not responded to the offer of accommodation at a Royal residence by the deadline last week.

Maybe he should have got a plane to take Archie and Lilibet to see Grandpa?

Or to Balmoral to see the late Queen during what everyone could see was likely to be her last summer.

lollygiggler · 06/07/2026 18:16

Harry wants the palace. I’m sure if he picked the phone up and said “hi Dad, I’m in the area on Tuesday, any chance I can bunk in your spare room?” then I’m sure Charlie would say yes. I mean, Camilla might have to move the pile of washing waiting to be put away off the spare bed and ask Charlie to move his junk he’s dumped in there, but isn’t that what all families do?

Admittedly, by the end of the week Camilla might be on mumsnet asking AIBU to want my ungrateful houseguest to leave …

How come William doesn't behave like this?
Harry is an adult.
He makes his own choices.
I have no idea why people infantilise him.

I always thought William was lucky to partner with someone from a more stable family so young. Have seen people IRL from dysfunctional setups meet their spouse as teens/young adults and really benefit from having some better adult role models around them.

How short memories are. Harry and Megan outshown Wills and Kate 10 fold until WKs team got on the offensive. Now there's a rift not least due to racism and it's Harry and Megan's fault!

Seriously, this was contrived. KC should seek to heal the rife. He's the head of the family, that's his job. End of.

So YANBU @mintleavesandthyme

I think there’s a lot of racism in this too.

Of course he’s a crap dad… just like the Queen was a crap mum. He became a crap dad the day he decided to have children with a woman he didn’t love whilst still carrying on with his fancy piece…which in turn came about because the queen wouldn’t let him marry who he loved. They are all very damaged people which shows in their actions. Maybe the next generation will be better but that life will still leave scars.

Nah. It’s all a PR stunt by Harry. I feel sorry for his poor dad.

What does he gain from such a stunt?

You’re quite happy with £200million going to the king so he can live in luxury though?

Where's the £200 million from? The "income" the King receives from the Govt is actually the Sovereign Grant and it doesn't go into his pocket. It's currently around £137m and that money funds the Monarchy as an entirety – all upkeep of palaces, Royal parks, official royal duties, royal travel, staff payroll etc. The Royal Family in turn brings £1.7-£2.5 billion into the UK economy every year, so I'd say that's a pretty good deal for us. The King meanwhile receives a private income of £25m from the Duchy of Cornwall's business interests, so not directly from the taxpayer.

As far as I can see, Prince Harry does nothing to contribute to the UK economy now he's in the States. Certainly doesn't pay taxes here like his dad and brother do.

Another victim card for the American press and fans

I find it utterly incredible that a middle aged man, supposedly mature enough to be an officer in the army, run a charity, father children and organise a whole athletic competition, can't seem to be bothered to reply to an email confirming acceptance of accommodation.
Why does he have to act like a petulant child so often.

Maybe it's because that didn't happen. The gutter press isn't exactly known for telling the truth. They hate H&M and have whipped up the public to hate them as well.

IonianNerveGrip · 06/07/2026 18:21

mintleavesandthyme · 06/07/2026 18:18

What does he gain from such a stunt?

He doesn't seem to gain anything from any of this. I don't know why he wouldn't just give the required notice, make things easiest for all parties.

palron · 06/07/2026 18:22

Charles had no problem going to the States to see that arsehole Trump recently. And I know that was as HOS. A little diversion could have been arranged to see the Montecito family somewhere on that side of the pond. And don't tell me the logistics would have been insurmountable. KC3 is a flipping BILLIONAIRE. No point being one of them if you can't do what you want, when you want.

But it looks like he doesn't/didn't want, or is not allowed by other family members.

Please explain where there is racism in Harry not staying at Buckingham Palace.

Oh god, the delusion!

landlordhell · 06/07/2026 18:23

I think KC could make more effort. Why hasn’t he been out to visit H&M? Surely he can house them for the visit! Really bad.

The BBC is the gutter press now??

SereneFinch · 06/07/2026 18:23

Why does someone have to be the villain and someone the victim? Maybe, just maybe, there is fault on both sides and justification on both sides. As is the case for most people .

Racism is structural and pervasive. I’m not about to give you a human geography and cultural history essay. Go and educate yourself

Harry was offered accommodation at Buckingham Palace.
No member of the Royal Family is currently living at Buckingham Palace.
If someone were to stay there, arrangements about security, housekeeping, catering, other staff as required, would need to be made.
Therefore Harry, quite reasonably, was asked to confirm whether he wanted to stay there and who if anyone would be accompanying him.
He didn't confirm, and it's now too late to make the necessary arrangements.
None of which has anything to do with the King's parenting skills.

So why offer him Buckingham Palace of all places?

palron · 06/07/2026 18:25

Something must be happening with AMW. Deflection, look - over there! Maybe he's moving to a nicer house in Norfolk with full security and loads of money courtesy of his big brother while all this shite with H is going on.

SpidersAreShitheads · 06/07/2026 18:25

mintleavesandthyme · 06/07/2026 18:16

I think there’s a lot of racism in this too.

Oh give over.

This always seems to be the default accusation when anyone criticises Meghan. It's such horseshit - and actually really trivialises genuine racism.

I think there are cultural differences between the UK and the US. Nothing to do with skin colour. And I'm sure there's an element on this in why Meghan comes over so poorly in the eyes of many. We might share a language but communication styles are very different between the two nations. Meghan's word salads often come across as self-absorbed and pretentious.

But she was roundly welcomed at the start - ignoring the gutter press who are just vile to everyone sooner or later. Meghan has brought all of the criticism on herself with her shitty behaviour.

Harry is equally as bad, or worse. It's hard to know which of them is driving all of this drama.

The pair of them could do so much good while leading the quiet life that they apparently craved. But no, it's always a bloody drama and it's never, ever their fault.

Tableforjoan · 06/07/2026 18:26

mintleavesandthyme · 06/07/2026 18:18

What does he gain from such a stunt?

Same as any person who sells their souls to the press.

It keeps him in the papers which keeps up interest in him. It also remind people he is not just harry but is prince harry son of a king.

So he makes him worth money from the gigs he does get.

If he wanted to come he could. He could answer before a deadline. He doesn’t need to share his whole schedule but he does because he wants to.

The king himself manages to go to places and we don’t know about it till after and many places he goes we will never hear of. If a king can do that harry can do that. He doesn’t want to.

sandalbed · 06/07/2026 18:26

It’s all so ridiculous & petty, so what if he was late to confirm just make the best of it. Shows how dysfunctional they all are.

Passingthrough123 · 06/07/2026 18:28

HumberSquid · 06/07/2026 18:25

So why offer him Buckingham Palace of all places?

Because there was no way they were going to have him poking around Windsor or Kensington Palace.

Why does someone have to be the villain and someone the victim? Maybe, just maybe, there is fault on both sides and justification on both sides. As is the case for most people .

This is far too sensible!

HelenaWilson · 06/07/2026 18:28

So why offer him Buckingham Palace of all places?

What should they have offered him? Presumably he wanted to be in London.

And whatever was offered, the same issues would apply - security, vetting for anyone he wanted to bring with him, housekeeping etc.
