To really hate seeing bare chested men in the street?

It doesn't matter if they're in good shape or not, in fact they very well formed ones almost make it worse. It's not about whether it's nice to look at or not, but it feels uncomfortable, whether subconcious or not, it seems designed to demonstrate male dominance and is all a bit chest beating, like gorillas in the zoo!

I really don't see a bare chest as 'an expression of dominance' and neither do I think a male chest is 'repulsive'.

Obviously you're allowed to hate seeing it but I don't think the fact that you don't like seeing it is any reason for it not to be allowed. People don't have to conform to your personal preferences.

There are so, so many threads on Mumsnet where people basically complain that they have to look at other human bodies that they don't find personally pleasing. Right now we've got threads where people are furious about:

  • Having to see girls wearing skimpy shorts
  • People revealing their toes by wearing sandals in the office
  • The OP's own husband daring to wander round in his pants in his own home
  • Men taking shirts off in 35C heat
  • Neighbours and their friends 'prancing round in bikinis' in their own gardens

Also in recent weeks and months we've had people complaining about:

  • Sleeveless tops and 'not wanting to see people's armpits'
  • Bikinis in leisure centre pools because people 'don't want to see that'
  • Scrunch-bum leggings and crop tops in gyms
  • An OP's husband wearing a workout vest to the gym instead of a t-shirt

But honestly, so what if you don't like seeing certain types or parts of bodies? Other people aren't there to look a certain way for you and other people aren't responsible for your personal feelings of discomfort at the sight of certain body parts.

There is a massive double standard, by convention, regarding men being topless and women being topless, which is annoying, but probably not one we can reasonably solve, so in a society where men's chests are considered non-sexual by convention, it isn't remotely reasonable to insist that they cover up.

👍🏻👍🏻

I am not the sort of man that takes their top off willy nilly and I do think it looks uncouth in certain settings and especially indoors.

However I do run around Richmond Park without my top on and I am out of shape! So why do I do it ?

I kid you not I love it. There is something really liberating or freeing about it. Running in nature in the sun without some clammy top sticking to my skin is exhilarating. I am sure plenty of people look at me and think WTF but it really is so enjoyable I don't care.

When I do Parkrun I always run with a top on because of decorum and I guessed (correctly from this thread) that a lot of women do not appreciate it. I think its only fair in that situation to think of others but when I'm running in my own its a different story.

It's done to intimidate and dominate. It's never decent men who do this, it's always lairy 'lads'. Can you imagine your GP or your child's headmaster hanging around outside Wetherspoons with his top off?

😂 😂 😂

Madder than a box of frogs.

Magicpaintbrush · 29/06/2026 14:03

I don't like it. It feels, I don't know, arrogant or show-offy, which is maybe why people are construing it as aggressive/intimidating. Maybe it's a 'look at me' alpha male thing. Maybe they are thinking women will look at them and think 'Phwoar!' - I don't, and I don't know any women who would. Mars and Venus.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 29/06/2026 14:06

One in the supermarket last week in trainers and shirts. Terrible.

Rewis · 29/06/2026 14:22

I dislike it aswell. Even my partner walking around the house shirtless. Or las weekend my nephew being shirtless around. In not thrilled about women walking aroudn in bikinis eitherm

Blackcatahotcat · 29/06/2026 14:28

Just left Tesco and as I was driving out saw a bloke with no top on going towards the entrance. Have some respect ffs

Toveylove · 29/06/2026 11:42

I used to dislike it, because it’s vulgar. But honestly, now that I see women dressed in the Muslim way, with long clothes on and their heads tightly wrapped in the heat, I feel very very very in favour of Total Clothing Rights. It’s a terrible thing to be so oppressed that you have to hide yourself.

Let’s stay well away from body shaming.

I feel outraged when I see these women out with their husbands who are bare to the waist or wearing just a singlet. Usually she coping with the kids, too.

Longdarkcloud · 29/06/2026 15:03

Generally I think it’s particularly anti social when one is expected to be in close proximity such as a public place, store etc. Not so much in the outdoors where I am able to distance myself

countrygirl99 · 29/06/2026 11:20

And yet if someone posts complaining about teeny weeny shorts, PJs in Tesco, visible bras or whatever they get roundly told women have the right to wear whatever they want, wherever they want. Does this not apply to men as well?

This

So many leap to the defense of young girls with their arses hanging out, yet me arent allowed to wear what they want?

I think decent coverage all round would be better for us all!

BlueFahrenheit · 29/06/2026 15:51

Ohh. I don't mind if it's outside, but I prefer the sight in coastal environments.

A lovely toned man walking in my direction, yes please. It encourages my DH to exercise more often.

Jopo12 · 29/06/2026 15:57

I rather like seeing young fit men half naked! I can appreciate a well formed body!
If the body isn't well formed, or like most men, over-formed ;-) Then fair play to them, I wish I was allowed to do it.

Not keen on them being inside public establishments half dresss (pubs, shops etc) but I'm find with them wondering the streets like that.

Rubyslipperswitch · 29/06/2026 16:36

I think it is inappropriate for men to be topless in public spaces/shops/public transport.

I also think that of women and girls who go around with bikini tops and shorts that shows half of their bum.

TrishM80 · 29/06/2026 17:38

Thoughts and prayers to the women on this thread who are "intimidated" by bare male chests. May God give you the strength to unclutch those tightly-held pearls.

Legomania · 29/06/2026 18:10

SeaAndSangria · 29/06/2026 13:50

You can tell whether a man's a "lairy lad" or their profession just from what they're wearing or not wearing
You should have that as your superpower 🙄😁

I would put money on the fact that the office worker blokes I know would be almost as unlikely to wander round the street topless as they would be to strip off entirely

Erin1975 · 29/06/2026 11:02

Agreed. Should be "taps oan" for all as far as I am concerned.

Agreed I wouldn't inflict the sight of my moobs on anyone except myself and DW and only at home.

What is there to be intimidated by? It's a bare chest!

Is this because you have moobs and not a toned chest?

BlueFahrenheit · 29/06/2026 18:27

Nope I'm near 60 and have an array of nice polo shirts and tee shirts that get compliments rather than if fatty moi was on display

schnubbins · 29/06/2026 19:06

Men without a top other than on the beach is absolutely disgusting .Same with women having their bum hanging out of shorts .

PurpleCoo · 30/06/2026 20:57

It's inappropriate for men to be in public with their top off. It's vulgar and shows a lack of respect and class. The exception being the beach of course.
