To really hate seeing bare chested men in the street?

It doesn't matter if they're in good shape or not, in fact they very well formed ones almost make it worse. It's not about whether it's nice to look at or not, but it feels uncomfortable, whether subconcious or not, it seems designed to demonstrate male dominance and is all a bit chest beating, like gorillas in the zoo!

Having seen some of the specimens wandering about during the hot weather I wish they'd keep their clothes on. None of them demonstrate male masculinity, usually far from it.

You are free to find it 'strange' but you don't get to tell women how they should feel, or that their feelings are 'wrong' and 'not valid.' As a pp said, in most other countries, men cover up, but men in the UK seem to want to push their sweaty, hairy chests and fat bellies into womens faces.

You are free not to like it but you are not free to dictate how other people dress. See how it works?

Me when I do see a top less man.

Errrr, OK then. Confused The problem is, the men who are topless around the UK look more like pic 1, and not like pic 2. I see waaaaaay more men who look like pic 1 who are topless, than I do of men who look like pic 2!

Imagine if these kind of 'cor' and 'phew, I'm fanning myself' type comments ended up on here (posted by men) on a thread about women.

Mumsnet double standards at its finest.

Just echoing my own words back at me is really not a good defence, and is a sure sign that somebody is losing the argument, 2/10.

Probably getting it from their dads.

It’s funny the other day I went for a walk near the leisure centre (was looking for my cat) and felt self conscious over my shorts as have cellulite. Saw a load of lads that had been playing footy and they didn’t have tops on. One was rather big in the tummy and I thought why am I self conscious?

NessCaffayy · 29/06/2026 13:05

Agree. It’s revolting.
Although I’d extend it to hating seeing men in the street …

GimmieABreakOr3 · 29/06/2026 13:07

YANBU, men need to put it away!

Mindtheagp · 29/06/2026 13:08

I think it’s lovely

Men are born and raised to have more confidence. They are rarely slated or berated, and mummy often tells him he's amazing. Girls/daughters don't tend to get this treatment so much growing up. Women are criticised and berated by society too. Listen to the song 'The Man' by Taylor Swift. (Click on the number 1 below to see the video.)

GucciBear · 29/06/2026 13:15

Quite.

Bertiebiscuit · 29/06/2026 13:19

Absolutely revolting, intimidating, unhygienic in public, i hate this. Its an offence except for on the beach in most European countries, much more civilised.
1)it is a public statement of male supremacy as women cannot walk about topless - why are male nipples and moobs ok when women get harassed for daring to feed their babies in public?
2)its unhygienic in hot sweaty weather
3) most men who do it have foul beer bellies, no one should have to see that

BatchCookBabe · 29/06/2026 13:26

Brilliantly put @Bertiebiscuit 👏

Beamsss · 29/06/2026 12:32

I think that's a very naive view, whoch you've been conditioned to.

Do you feel the same way about men who interupt, manspreading, calling you love, asking you to make the tea, mansplaining etc etc. A million "normal" daily things that are all designed to ket you know who's boss, even if the individual men doing it aren't conciously aware that's what they're doing.

🙄🙄🙄

It's not a naive view at all.

im quite able to call out a mansplaining idiot or shut down one that interrupts etc.

im also not terrified of a shirtless man or expect them all to have 'the body beautiful' when they remove their tops & in this heat I don't blame any of them for doing so. Nor my (f) neighbour in just HER pants.

I didn't do the same for fear of traumatising the other neighbours children, but that's my own issue.

MrsKeats · 29/06/2026 13:28

Agreed. Common as muck as my Nan would have said.

FWC2026 · 29/06/2026 13:29

BatchCookBabe · 29/06/2026 12:42

Yep!

Nope

FWC2026 · 29/06/2026 13:35

Beamsss · 29/06/2026 12:56

No, it's a discussion about the way bare chests are (another) thing men use to assert male dominance. And it is male dominance which kills women.

Which is why all the stuff about double standards is nonsense. It's different becuaae it is different.

It's a thread about how it makes YOU feel,

you're entitled to feel that way, what you're not entitled to do is state it as fact.

Classic MN
Sure some on her would be happy with total men and women segregation.

StormGazing · 29/06/2026 12:59

ug … agreed! There was an old bloke who lives near us, not seen him for a few years actually, but he’d be sitting on a bench in our high street in …. SPEEDO teeny trunks …. Only Olympic divers should be allowed to purchase
these!!!

And only models should be able to buy bikinis??

SadiraOfTyr · 29/06/2026 13:47

countrygirl99 · 29/06/2026 11:24

Maybe they are just hot. Why exactly do you find a man more scarey without a shirt? What is it about a shirt that makes them less scarey.

It's done to intimidate and dominate. It's never decent men who do this, it's always lairy 'lads'. Can you imagine your GP or your child's headmaster hanging around outside Wetherspoons with his top off?

You can tell whether a man's a "lairy lad" or their profession just from what they're wearing or not wearing
You should have that as your superpower 🙄😁
