To really hate seeing bare chested men in the street?

It doesn't matter if they're in good shape or not, in fact they very well formed ones almost make it worse. It's not about whether it's nice to look at or not, but it feels uncomfortable, whether subconcious or not, it seems designed to demonstrate male dominance and is all a bit chest beating, like gorillas in the zoo!

OP posts:

You're all still here.

And yet if someone posts complaining about teeny weeny shorts, PJs in Tesco, visible bras or whatever they get roundly told women have the right to wear whatever they want, wherever they want. Does this not apply to men as well?

But what about...????

GreatThingsAwait · 29/06/2026 11:57

I don’t like it either even when the guys have a good body. I also don’t like it if it’s women with too much on show. Trouble is with women is that it’s very subjective. Something can look ok on some women but not other. It feel wrong to think this but I think it’s true. Any butt cheeks hanging out or shorts up arse type of clothing just looks bad.

On the beach it looks ok though.

DabOfPistachio · 29/06/2026 11:58

Interesting thread. I grew up in a beach side town outside of the UK where casual flip flops, bare feet, men with bare chests etc was very normal so I hardly notice it here in hot weather and don't personally find it intimidating.
I can see how others would do as it is outside of the cultural norm here.

Tauranga · 29/06/2026 11:58

countrygirl99 · 29/06/2026 11:24

Maybe they are just hot. Why exactly do you find a man more scarey without a shirt? What is it about a shirt that makes them less scarey.

The OP and other posters have to justify their feelings to you? It is instinctual.

Legomania · 29/06/2026 11:58

Yeah it's tacky AF

Even if they're fit

Shudacudawuda · 29/06/2026 12:00

Its just polite to be clothed in public when going about your normal daily business.
We all judge people on their appearance, even if you say you don't, you do.
A topless man in a McDonalds gives a certain impression and for many people it wont be good! Same as a woman in miniscule hot pants and bikini top.
YANBU OP. And actually I also think it feels like a display of dominance. Hate it.

Lol so women can wear what they like and cover as much or as little of their bodies as they wish but men's clothing needs to be regulated.

How about women get their own house in order about what's acceptable and not?

We are discussing men.
Can you focus?
Sorry for your tiny

Yellowpapersun · 29/06/2026 12:01

Builder's bum is worse, when they bend down and you get an unfortunate eyeful of dark canyon 🤢

Tauranga · 29/06/2026 12:02

ShaggedMen · 29/06/2026 11:47

Have you ever been scared a man will kill you?

You are obviously male

DierdreDaphne · 29/06/2026 12:02

I think the dominance thing is definitely part of it, it's kind of LOOK HERE'S MY BIG BODY.

But also, we don't want your sweat touching us, the back of seats, etc.

If a young woman in tiny shorts was leaving sweat prints from her thighs on a chair that would also be grim. But a) Men are a lot sweatier and b) she is disgusting, yes, but not also threatening.

So I don't want sweaty womens skin to contact me/the furniture either , but while it's unpleasant they do not evoke the same dislike/ disgust in me, and, I think, many others, vs the topless men.

ChamonixMountainBum · 29/06/2026 12:05

There was a largely sweaty topless bloke on the train last week during the heatwave. Grim for whoever had to sit in his damp seat afterwards.

mydogisthebest · 29/06/2026 12:05

I don't find it intimidating but more vomit inducing especially if they have tatoos. I don't like all the female bums on display at the moment either

ShaggedMen · 29/06/2026 12:05

People say "oh the evils of islam...." Men and women have to cover up in both. Ideally though I think modesty is great for both

WhatcakeshalIbaketoday · 29/06/2026 12:06

I just think they look daft. If a man is well toned I’m more likely to look the other way because they may want to be looked at. I don’t find it intimidating though.

Well there’s some kind of lesson which discusses how the rider of a motorbike and the driver of a car can travel along the same road but they both experience it differently. Men and women do not experience the world in the same way. Men’s clothing choices are in no way subject to the same heavy handed policing as experienced by women over the centuries.

FreedomandPeace · 29/06/2026 12:08

I also find it intimidating

I have a rule if I go onto site ( I’m both a client and an Architect )
everyone has to put their clothes on

Bare chests are intimidating

Anyone working in a spot that can be seen by the public also has to put their clothes on.

I don’t care how hot it is. If women did it we’d be arrested

Oh God yes. The tattoos on show is indeed vomit inducing

Well no, because women can be arrested for being topless. So not really the same thing.

BeanQuisine · 29/06/2026 12:09

I'd rather not see bare-chested people in the street of any sex or age. But men and boys are obviously the worst offenders.

Teenagerantruns · 29/06/2026 12:11

I work in a restaurant on a holiday park, we are always having to tell men to out a top on, no one wants to see a naked body while eating.

When was the last time a woman was arrested for being topless? Young women pretty much bare all every day and no one is arresting them.

countrygirl99 · 29/06/2026 12:11

Beamsss · 29/06/2026 11:41

Fgs the situation is entirely different for men/women. It's the whole men are afraid women will laugh at them, women are afraid men will killl them thing

So a man without a shirt is more likely to kill you? Best not go to the beach.

Chritrup · 29/06/2026 12:12

The no shirt hikers will say it’s due to the weather but there’s no appreciable difference between walking shirtless and walking in a light cotton t-shirt or similar. In fact, the t-shirt is probably better than having the beating sun on your body for the best part of the day.
