To really hate seeing bare chested men in the street?

It doesn't matter if they're in good shape or not, in fact they very well formed ones almost make it worse. It's not about whether it's nice to look at or not, but it feels uncomfortable, whether subconcious or not, it seems designed to demonstrate male dominance and is all a bit chest beating, like gorillas in the zoo!

I’m not sure why men think it’s a good look - most are either lobster red, out of shape or plenty with loads of tats- and few look good -

When? Nudity, including full nudity, male or female is not illegal in Uk unless it is with "intent to cause alarm, harassment, or distress."

I'm not suggesting bare chests should be illegal, only pointing out that, IMO, it is another casual way men assert dominance.

I'm sorry you feel like that, but 'asserting make dominance' is a feeling you have & something you need to deal with, a man without a shirt on, is just a man without a shirt on.

SallyCinnamon38 · 29/06/2026 12:28

I agree, I hate it too. There was a topless man in the supermarket at the weekend and it was horrible.

ThatJadeLion · 29/06/2026 12:28

If females can go out bending over with their backsides hanging out, I think it's fair men can be topless. Don't like either, it's 🤢

So?

it's been bloody hot, maybe they're just more comfortable that way.

same as 'unattractive' women wearing boob tubes or skimpy vest tops.

Meh, doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Sometimes it's quite nice to look at anyway 😁

I think that's a very naive view, whoch you've been conditioned to.

Do you feel the same way about men who interupt, manspreading, calling you love, asking you to make the tea, mansplaining etc etc. A million "normal" daily things that are all designed to ket you know who's boss, even if the individual men doing it aren't conciously aware that's what they're doing.

I don't like either to be honest

BatchCookBabe · 29/06/2026 12:41

I completely agree with you @Beamsss and I don't know why people keep banging on about 'but WOMEN can wear what they want then can they?!' That's not what the thread is about. Stop the whataboutery!

Everleigh13 · 29/06/2026 12:43

It genuinely doesn’t bother me. Let them do it if they want.

I find it strange that so many find it disgusting, intimidating etc.

Picklelily99 · 29/06/2026 12:45

I think its more about a lack of decorum for me! On holiday in other countries, you don't see men walking in their own towns and cities with their tops off, because it's disrespectful.

Fgs the situation is entirely different for men/women. It's the whole men are afraid women will laugh at them, women are afraid men will killl them thing

So a man wearing a t-shirt is less likely to kill you?!

Yes this, how on earth is it intimidating?

The OP and other posters have to justify their feelings to you? It is instinctual.

Doesn't sound like they're asking for them to justify , it sounds like they're just asking a question on a discussion forum.

Walkden · 29/06/2026 12:50

Mumsnet double standards to the fore again.

How dare people criticise how women dress. They should be allowed to walk around with ass cheeks showing regardless of how uncomfortable or xfeelz" of others. How dare people police what others wear!

Men walk around with chest on display- they are gorillas asserting dominance which makes the womenz fear for their lives!

Crudd99 · 29/06/2026 12:51

Tauranga · 29/06/2026 12:01

We are discussing men.
Can you focus?
Sorry for your tiny

Tiny what?

Crudd99 · 29/06/2026 12:52

Tauranga · 29/06/2026 12:02

You are obviously male

How do you know that?

Beamsss · 29/06/2026 12:56

TrishM80 · 29/06/2026 12:46

No, it's a discussion about the way bare chests are (another) thing men use to assert male dominance. And it is male dominance which kills women.

Which is why all the stuff about double standards is nonsense. It's different becuaae it is different.

You are free to find it 'strange' but you don't get to tell women how they should feel, or that their feelings are 'wrong' and 'not valid.' As a pp said, in most other countries, men cover up, but men in the UK seem to want to push their sweaty, hairy chests and fat bellies into womens faces.

StormGazing · 29/06/2026 12:59

ug … agreed! There was an old bloke who lives near us, not seen him for a few years actually, but he’d be sitting on a bench in our high street in …. SPEEDO teeny trunks …. Only Olympic divers should be allowed to purchase
these!!!
