Sandals and crusty feet at work

AIBU to think that walking sandals and flip flops are not professional workwear? Yes, it’s been ridiculously hot, but I don’t want to see brittle yellow toenails, crusty dry skin and, in one case, flakes and chunks of skin hanging off the manky trotters of my colleagues 🤮 At the very least, if we are going to be subjected to your toe cleavage, have a pedicure first. And don’t get me started on the smelly ones!

You think that shaving legs is basic hygiene? Oh dear.

How illuminating.

I didn't know shaving your legs was for hygiene purposes.

🤣

backformoreofthesame · 30/06/2026 17:31

shaving legs and armpits may actually be unhygienic and unhealthy

it was a marketing ploy by a razor company way back and it started in the states. Naturally

my toenails are currently black but I can assure you they are clean and no one would be poisoned even if they ate their tea with them

Of course it is!

I'm sorry but a hit dog hollers. I must say that this thread is a bit of an eye opener. I wouldn't dream of going out in public with unshaved legs or armpits, unfiled feet or yellow toenails and cracked cuticles. It makes me wonder what other people consider basic hygiene.

Omg. So let me get this straight, Betty Joan.

  1. A poster who, by her own admission, keeps her body "incredibly clean" and wears appropriate clothing, but who does not have conventionally attractive feet, gets fed up with being called manky, rank, only fit to live in a forest segregated from humanity, etc.
  1. You decide that her defensive attitude is enough to prove that she has poor hygiene overall.
  1. You then list the ways in which you adhere to other standards of conventional beauty, which no one else has even mentioned, to prove your superiority.

Nice.

No part of what I wrote contradicts that. It still doesn’t make it any less valuable because we want to make the best of ourselves to the extent that we can.

I must be lucky in the foot department. I have always had good feet with no effort. It's the only bit of my body I am happy with. It helps I have never worn high heels or court shoes to excess so I don't have my mother and sister's cramped together toes and bunions.

Women have always been hard on their feet. It's all very well pumice-ing and nail painting but the real damage is done by years of pushing all your weight down into a small toe-space.

I thank my narrow feet for never really getting into the typical smart heeled shoe. I can't really wear slip-ons, devastating though that was as an 80s teen before Mary Janes had a sort of retro chic. I had to wear buckled shoes like a five year old. Boy, was I grateful boots were in in the 90s.

Or lack thereof 😅

I have to say, I don't quite understand the posters who are horrified by pedicures. I absolutely love mine. Every other week. Feet in warm lavender scented water, lavender scrub, stress releasing massage, file straight across, paint. In between, some Cerave moisturiser before bed at night. I don't know what's not to like!

My feet are terribly ticklish. It's always put me off. It's not a pleasant sensation, to me, I can't even bear my husband touching my feet. It sounds so relaxing when people talk about it, but my feet recoil at the prospect.

I feel the same....and i dont like the idea of a facial either!

I dont have manicures because my nails get wrecked at work, but I think im pretty presentable and hygienic! I put cream on my feet every day, and paint my own nails in summer. I had a nail infection a year or 2 ago and got it professionally treated.

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 30/06/2026 20:02

I worked with a man who wore flip flops every day of the year, snow, rain whatever, his feet were out. I did not like it.

You should have cast your gaze away from his feet.

This thread is nuts

Thank fuck I don't know people who object to toes and unshaven legs.

Well we shall have to agree to differ @Anarchy99 as I do think we owe our colleagues the courtesy of being clean and tidy in the workplace. I think that is just good manners and respectful of other people.

I also think we owe ourselves the courtesy of looking after the only body that we have - but that is a whole other subject in itself.

Clean feet can have brittle nails or hair on them. They can be dry and clean.
No one owes a damn thing to anyone else about their body.

The smell of lavender makes me instantly nauseous and gives me a dreadful headache. I don’t know why, and it’s only got worse since I had covid and my sense of smell went mental.

Says the poster who has spent so much time on here judging other people's "wanky soaps", "treatments", "perfectly pedicured" etc! Come on now.

I’m amused because you are judging me due to your own insecurities. In reality I wouldn’t even notice because I’m not someone who cares what others look like. 🤷‍♀️

Anarchy99 · 30/06/2026 20:51

BettyJoanPerske · 30/06/2026 16:34

I'm sorry but the more you talk, the more convinced I am that you must be pretty unkempt and that those around you are just too polite to say so.

You can think what you want love. I don’t know why you are so determined to tell me how unkempt I am, it’s making you look a tad unhinged. I have a professional job where you have to dress smart and be clean.

The only thing you would notice is my nails as I don’t expose my legs or feet. And anyone who had an issue with my nails can mind their own business - I’m not going to risk going back to self harming just to protect the sensibilities of people like you.

Good for you. Now if you could just work on being a nice person, I’m sure you would be great.

Bikenutz · 30/06/2026 21:04

I really couldn’t care less about what my colleagues look like. If they smell ok I’m happy with that. 😂

I’m more concerned about whether they can do their job, because it’s more likely to impact on me if they can’t.

Ugliness is sometimes more than skin deep.
