Sandals and crusty feet at work

AIBU to think that walking sandals and flip flops are not professional workwear? Yes, it’s been ridiculously hot, but I don’t want to see brittle yellow toenails, crusty dry skin and, in one case, flakes and chunks of skin hanging off the manky trotters of my colleagues 🤮 At the very least, if we are going to be subjected to your toe cleavage, have a pedicure first. And don’t get me started on the smelly ones!

Does someone actually need to be a dentist to know that flossing is essential or a podiatrist to know that removing dead skin is also essential? The reason so many elderly people have to see a chiropodist is because they can no longer reach their own feet to do essential foot maintenance - nothing to do with aesthetics. Charities like Age UK offer foot care services for elderly people for this very reason.

Have you never tripped over an unexpectedly deep step or unexpectedly raised part of the pavement? Are all surfaces totally flat where you live? I live on a tree lined street, old, rooty trees and the pavements are very uneven.

If I were walking on such a pavement, I would not be focusing on a stranger's feet.

I mean, good gracious, it's odd walking around with your gaze lowered to the ground, trying to pinpoint dry feet, cracked heels and hairy toes. To then make a post about your dislike for dry feet is audacious and ridiculous.

My life has substance. I don't care about how other people look after their feet.

Are you a dentist and podiatrist?

I'm a regular user of both as are all members of my family. We know what we need to do ourselves every day as routine hygiene and what professionals are for.

Why people are so resistant to basic hygiene tasks is very mysterious. There's an odd pride in being gross.

You do realise that these NHS provisions are under an immense amount of pressure, right? Many people can't access these services.

A. They may need to wear sandals if they're having difficulty wearing other types of shoes.

B. They may not be able to floss their teeth due to severe dental issues.

People need to mind their own business and worry about their own precious lives.

CRITICAL THINKING.

Yes, I do the same.

However, I'm more concerned with my appearance than with sharing a dislike for those who can't access the same provisions I can.

I don't care about what others are doing.

Dry feet? I don't care.
Cracked heels? I really don't care.
Hairy toes? None of my business.
Imperfect teeth? Good for you!

My life isn't dull enough to be looking at feet 🤣

Flossing teeth is absolutely essential. The ignorance on this thread is catastrophic.

What is ‘catastrophic’ on this thread is the hyperbole from people who are so shallow that they don’t see the difference between cleanliness and cosmetic.

I had no idea flossing was 'essential' - I've never bothered, never had a filling. Also, removing dead skin on feet - what dead skin? Only time I've had dead skin is after a blister has healed and that can be trimmed away with scissors. And I never get blisters anyway, as I don't run ultras any more.

Anarchy99 · 30/06/2026 09:40

I did read your post.

You don’t ‘owe’ anyone else a thing when it comes to your own appearance.

If I wore open toed shoes then you would see I have next to no toenails and the soles of my feet are probably not great. Do I owe it to others to take care of how my feet look if they don’t bother me?

You should probably go live in a forest somewhere because being a part of society isn’t your thing. And you like to try to shame those of us who care about hygiene and basic appearance. It won’t work on me. The vast majority of people in our society do care; you are an outlier.

It’s only essential if you don’t want bad breath but some of you obviously don’t care. 🥴🤢

The only shaming is coming from those who insist their standards of aesthetics are in fact basic hygiene. Nobody has tried to shame anyone for what they want to do to themselves, only for judging other people who don't want to do the same.

I am always incredibly clean, that is a courtesy to myself more than others. My clothes are appropriate for wherever I am.

Please tell me how I owe anyone else anything? Should I have to subject myself to the cost and unpleasantness of a pedicure as a ‘courtesy’ to others? Why?

I bite my nails - do I owe others a duty to put false nails on, use hand cream etc?

Please explain why I am expected to go through expense and potential stress just to keep others from being mortally offended by my existence.

I am unattractive - should I have cosmetic surgery? What about weight loss surgery? How far should this duty go?

To be fair, nailbiting is pretty gross.

I find all of this body fascism really disturbing.

Maybe they find your face or hands revolting. Maybe they hate your haircut or your dry lips.

The state of someone else's feet is really none of your business.

Absolutely agree. Do you complain about other parts of other people's bodies? What other bits do you find unacceptable? It might be that someone really objects to your upper arms, your shins, your chin, your fingers, your face even. I wonder if they have done a post on MN about it?

The NHS is under pressure because people refuse to take care of themselves. Foot health is absolutely crucial for posture, joints etc beyond being essential for mobility which itself is a huge driver of health outcomes.

What is shallow on this thread is people who don't know how to look after themselves because they end up bankrupting the NHS.

Not moisturising / exfoliating your feet is not what is bankrupting the NHS.

There may be hyperbole on here, but if you see someone with thick yellow, cracked hard skin, it looks dirty. They may in fact, be fresh out of the shower, but their feet make them look minging.

Well I’m sorry I have such ingrained anxiety that I have been doing it since I was a child. Should I wear false nails so as not to offend you? Perhaps I should have a regular manicure?

Some of you are missing the point. If someone is clean, and dressed in an appropriate manner if the situation calls for it, how does it affect you?

I brush my teeth twice a day like a normal person. Flossing is only if you have something stuck between your teeth surely? How does it prevent bad breath?

Are you okay?

I shower and wash my hair every day and my clothes are always clean. I clean my teeth. I dress appropriately for wherever I am. So hygiene and basic appearance is covered.

What about that makes me someone who isn’t fit to live on society?

Does nothing at floor level ever catch your eye, then?

I love shoes. Often the first thing I look at, so yes, I see.

backformoreofthesame · 30/06/2026 11:49

It LOOKS dirty but IS NOT dirty - that’s your problem not theirs. If you can’t tell the difference that’s your lack of knowledge. We shouldn’t work to the lowest common denominator

iread this thread and think “oh I have been making a mistake”

It isn't the appearance of the nails, it is the act of biting them itself. If you do that in front of others it's minging.
