Sandals and crusty feet at work

AIBU to think that walking sandals and flip flops are not professional workwear? Yes, it’s been ridiculously hot, but I don’t want to see brittle yellow toenails, crusty dry skin and, in one case, flakes and chunks of skin hanging off the manky trotters of my colleagues 🤮 At the very least, if we are going to be subjected to your toe cleavage, have a pedicure first. And don’t get me started on the smelly ones!

I agree but it’s usually men’s feet that give me the ick. They’re often the ones with the yellow toe nails and hard skin all over their feet.. yuk.

What’s wrong with toes being visible? I think I have beautiful feet and I am going to flaunt them ;) Who is going wear shoes in this hot weather. You don’t have to look at them if you have feet phobia.

I'm not expecting that everyone who wears sandals has to have pedicure or painted nails and completely moisturised heels. But my colleague wears sandals on absolutely crusty feet.. Nails haven't even been trimmed for weeks(months?), and the heels are so flaky I didn't even know they could get that bad.

I wear light trainers all summer and I'm OK, I don't know why someone HAS to wear strappy sandals especially if the feet are absolutely horrendous. It's just not very professional.

I don’t have an issue with feet, I just don’t feel toes are appropriate in a professional business setting so would rather keep mine covered at work. These shoes are still cool to wear as they aren’t a solid front, that’s all.

People were saying they couldn't do it every week, so I told them every three weeks was fine. If they wanted to do it, of course.

Good to hear you find them cool, I thought they looked sweaty. Useful info if people are looking for that style.

Still a fair bit of foot including some toe on display though. Don't know that it would satisfy the purists!

Haha, I agree with this, I absolutely can’t cope with the slap-slap sound of flip flops either! Also agree I am probably unreasonable ( and unusually sensitive to sounds) 😂

I don't have any of the issues mentioned in your OP but I do have a bunion. I'm very conscious of it and wear long dresses/trousers to try and hide it but I had no choice last week but to wear open toed sandals, surely if people don't like it they just don't look at people's feet!

I absolutely hate feet (horrible nails or really cracked dirty heels) but I think when its 35° id cut some slack about footwear. I didn't wear my flip flops to work last week as I feel my feet get/look dirty on my commute, (obviously I have showered in the morning) so I wore canvas pumps. But my feet would have been a lot cooler in sandals, and I wouldnt blame anyone else for wearing them.
Some people have horrible teeth and thats a lot more difficult not to look at if youre speaking to them!!

Seriously? You don’t see why someone wouldn’t want to pay for a person to fuck about with their feet for non medical purposes?

Thing is, you actively have to look at someone’s feet (as if it’s not like something being at eye level). So don’t bother.

I don’t get why people are expected to subject themselves to ‘beauty treatments’ purely for the sake of strangers. I’m not going to put myself through something unpleasant so I don’t offend someone, especially when they don’t have to look.

I have those as well, Should I pay £350 for dentures so as not to bother people?

When there is yet another thread about how selfish we are as a society, we need only to look at this kind of thread to see what has happened:

People going about their business and others feeling it’s their right to impose certain standards on people’s bodies.

And does your MIL get her teeth cleaned at the dentist twice a month or does she brush and floss twice a day herself? Teeth and feet need just as much attention as each other and that attention is EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE YEAR.

Brushing is basic cleaning, same as washing your feet. Flossing is highly recommended but not actually essential.

All this special cleaning and removing skin and moisturising and oiling is all a completely optional set of steps above and just being clean.

Many people are quite happy being clean without worrying about being aesthetically pleasing to some other random person's arbitrary level.

Hard skin on feet etc is cosmetic and therefore irrelevant. Bad teeth are painful and ideally need to be kept healthy.

Genuine question from someone to whom it has never occurred to have a pedicure etc - what on earth do you do to your feet every day?

She applies her prescribed cream to her feet twice a day in edition to her fortnightly podiatrist appointments. He feet still look fucking horrendous but there is nothing she can do about it.

And you can emphasise EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE YEAR as much as you like but to compare health (teeth) and primping (feet) is ridiculous.

I think you can look clean and tidy (both male and female and whatever else anyone is self-declaring as) and like you haven't just emerged from a swamp whatever the weather, so I kind of agree with OP.

I don't expect people to be manicured and pedicured or with a face full of make up, but I do think it is a courtesy to everyone else to be clean and tidy - particularly if you are working with other people. This extends to all body parts, so includes feet.

I also think feet are very important and need to be looked after. They should not be covered in crust, fungus, corns and callouses with untrimmed toenails and be generally disgusting. Those are not healthy or happy feet!

It’s really easy. Look people in the eye when you speak to them. Like you are meant to.

How could sandals be inappropriate? Inappropriate for what?

I am always incredibly clean, that is a courtesy to myself more than others. My clothes are appropriate for wherever I am.

Please tell me how I owe anyone else anything? Should I have to subject myself to the cost and unpleasantness of a pedicure as a ‘courtesy’ to others? Why?

I bite my nails - do I owe others a duty to put false nails on, use hand cream etc?

Please explain why I am expected to go through expense and potential stress just to keep others from being mortally offended by my existence.

I am unattractive - should I have cosmetic surgery? What about weight loss surgery? How far should this duty go?

If you genuinely look at your coworkers’ body parts for more than a millisecond then perhaps you need to think about why that is

Say what now @Anarchy99 ? If you read my post, instead of jumping to conclusions, you will see that I said that no one needs to be manicured or pedicured or covered in make up - just clean and tidy as a courtesy to yourself and those around you.
