Sandals and crusty feet at work

AIBU to think that walking sandals and flip flops are not professional workwear? Yes, it’s been ridiculously hot, but I don’t want to see brittle yellow toenails, crusty dry skin and, in one case, flakes and chunks of skin hanging off the manky trotters of my colleagues 🤮 At the very least, if we are going to be subjected to your toe cleavage, have a pedicure first. And don’t get me started on the smelly ones!

I sometimes wear flip.flops to work, once I wore crocs, theres no dress code. I dont have manky or smelly feet. But generally I dont because I feel like my feet get dirtier when commuting in flip flops, and I cant run for the train if im.late.

Everyone (men and women) wear shorts, the other day i wore a tshirt that when I reached up to a high shelf about 1" of midriff was on show, and no one died.

We can't wear flip flops at work for health and safety reasons, but sandals are fine. I haven't seen any of the men in sandals though.

I drive to work so no issues with dirty public transport.

Rosebud987 · 29/06/2026 21:03

I’m a solicitor and have had sandals on all week. I do however have pretty feet and a pedicure and they’re smart sandals/wedges…. I don’t mind as long as the feet are tidy and clean

Esmeraldathe3rd · 29/06/2026 21:12

I don't like seeing acne, eczema, cold sores or hairy ears either but unfortunately other people have imperfect bodies and still have the right to be among us. I, on the other hand, am absolutely perfect in every way.

Baby193 · 29/06/2026 21:25

I wear smart sandals to work all the time in summer. I have regular pedicures and my toenails are painted but even if they weren’t I’d still wear them. It’s honestly never once occurred to me that people are looking at my feet and judging me - as long as I’m comfortable I don’t care! And the same for what anyone else on this planet is wearing. If it’s not affecting me I could not care less, I don’t know why people are so weird about it.

I have that @Ilovemum - I didn't know that was what it was called! It's horrible isn't it?

Anarchy99 · 29/06/2026 21:36

Tbf MN is obsessed with feet and shoes, to a batshit extent.

You've described my mother in laws feet.

She has podiatry twice a month because she has a skin condition which is worse on her feet. She can't help it. Even after having been to podiatry her feet look awful, just much, much better than they did.

You'd think they were never looked after and that couldn't be further from the truth.

That sounds miserable for your MIL. This wasn’t the case with the individuals I referred to.

But again, why does it matter? If they don’t smell then you can just look away.

Fair play to you knowing the medical and podiatry history of everyone with manky feet though.

I presume you would know why I didn’t have toenails if you saw my feet?

Thephantom · 29/06/2026 22:48

I'd rather sandals and crusty feet, than judgy bitchy colleagues in closed-toe shoes who have much too much time on their hands and so keep looking at people's feet. Crusty feet-i wouldn't even notice. But judgy/bitchy colleagues...🤷🏻‍♀️

But how would you know? mil doesn't tell anyone she has it.

Denim4ever · 29/06/2026 23:02

This is an 'only on Mumsnet' kinda clickbait thread. Oh and performance/sporty/walking sandals are appropriate commuting and workwear and don't reveal much of a persons feet.

What does 'crusty' even mean and who goes for regular pedicures/podiatry/chiropody? Serious reality check needed.

SaferHaven · 29/06/2026 23:12

Oh it’s gross op.
I think in uk we forget about feet a lot or they’re ignored as so much of the year they are in socks and shoes/trainers but some people literally do not look after them one iota.

Offherrockingchair · 28/06/2026 21:14

It’s not like I go round deliberately looking - you just can’t help seeing what people are wearing, and when there’s rough skin and yellowing bits on display, yuck!

They’re just feet ffs.

We all have them. Like we all have a fanny or a dick. And we all sweat. And we all shit. Massive smelly shits.

We’re all human. Just grow up and crack on with the job you’re paid to do.

shrunkenhead · 29/06/2026 18:59

Yes. Why are they falling off?! If they've weakened maybe consider a gel pedicure. You can buy self adhesive acrylic toe nails in Boots.

Distance runners often lose toenails. The only times it's happened to me were the two times I ran marathons.

Jk987 · 29/06/2026 23:46

Sandals are fine but why would people wear them without getting a pedicure first. That includes men.

Yeah but surely you can stick a fake nail on if you’re going to wear sandals!

Why should they have to? Fake nails are annoying as fuck and if the person missing a toenail isn’t bothered then it’s nobody else’s business.

Do you expect someone with a missing limb to stick a false limb on too? Or is it just missing nails you object to?

halfpastten · 29/06/2026 23:59

I do not care as long as my feet are comfortable. The same for everyone else.

Other priorities for time and money. I can't understand people who get anxious about just being their natural self.

The Awful Colleague strikes again. I love her silly threads.

Gettingbysomehow · 30/06/2026 00:28

Its so easy not to have disgusting feet.
If feet are creamed everyday for a month they become beautifully baby soft. I have extremely dry skin and this works perfectly.
I would never show my feet if I had disgusting cracked heels.

In my case, both times it was in November, so not really an issue. Losing a toenail is a fairly unpleasant thing. I don't know that I would have wanted a piece of non-breathable plastic stuck on my tender nail bed or interfering with the new nail growing in- you're supposed to give it as much air as possible once the nail bed hardens. I'm generally a pedicure every two weeks person, but I think if it had been hot weather, I would have prioritised a healthy foot over offending other people's sensibilities.
