To not support England?!

Feetballislife · 11/06/2026 10:12

Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER.
Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well.
If you live here then you should etc etc

YANBU - support who you like!
YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

The Irish Bar in Boston that’s been the hub for all the Scottish fans decided to close for the day of the England v Ghana game. Now THAT’s some epic ABE energy right there 😳😀

Allegedly they just needed a day off, back open for the Scotland game tonight. Mmm, suspicious!

You seem to be missing the essence of the thread.

I disagree.

I'm not an ABE - in fact, I'm currently a lukewarm well-wisher, but I hate that attitude of some England fans that other British nations should support them, or that immigrants living in England should adopt them. It's arrogant, entitled and sometimes crosses into xenophobic.

It's also counter-productive in that its going to drive more people away from wanting England to do well.

And even from an English perspective - would any true sports fan really want rival fans to be happy for their successes? Part of the fun is (good natured) rubbing your bragging rights in rivals' faces! You want to be met with seething envy, not "yeah I'm so happy for you!!!"

And is the OP trolling at the moment? Absolutely! It's part of the fun.

If England triumph, then I'm sure everyone will enjoy shitposting in return.

A load of you need to ditch the entitlement, pull the sticks out of yourselves, and embrace the fun of it a bit more.

Nowisthetimeforicecream · 24/06/2026 20:05

Bugger. Your colleagues are right if you not supporting England how can they possibly win? It's probably your lack of support that caused them not to bother scoring any goals.

It would be better if who supported who mattered, maybe the players could get sponsored water or mid game refreshments a bit like in the hunger games.

I've lived and worked in England all my life and I couldn't give a shit who wins the football.

England World Ranking #4
Ghana World ranking #64
Ghana played their hearts out, unlike England.IMHO of course. There may be England fans out there who thought England were good and still have a shot at winning the World Cup.
I can’t see England getting past USA, Norway, Spain, France, Germany, even Belgium playing like that.

I don't think England really want to win. I put this down to one sole reason - the theme song. The "it's coming home" song has got good traction and the inbuilt counter has already doubled in my lifetime from "30" to "60 years of hurt". If they were to win they would need to rewrite the whole thing, and to be honest - who could really be bothered with that.

I thinnk its the other way round if England got knocked out of the world cup but another of the home nations were still i it i think a lot of English fans would temporarily switch their allleigence
But if England was still in the world cup anf all the others werent you gurantee the other home nations would be like the Op anyone but England.

That isn't in line with my personal experience...when England got knocked out of the Euros and Wales made it to the semis, the prevailing attitude I encountered from England fans was wanting Wales to lose (because imagine if we won it before England and how insufferable we'd be).

Which is fine and normal, and you won't see many Welsh fans complaining about it.

That song was to celebrate the world cup coming to the home of football in 1996. The meaning often seems to be forgotten

Exactly. I wouldn’t expect England fans to switch allegiance.
England are never going to win any
major trophy with Harry Kane in charge. They need a winner in charge to really believe they can succeed.

Pedantry time: it was the Euros, not the World Cup.

Probably not but they have done a lot better in recent years.
Than when it was Beckham et al Era ehen there were a lot of big Egos.

@Feetballislife bit quiet this morning aren't you 🤭

I suspect Scotland are going home now.

And we will do it with grace and dignity.

we haven’t qualified for a World Cup in 28 years, just to be part of it was amazing, asking all our friends and family what we wanted out of this World Cup and most of them wanted was to have a good time watching it and for Scotland to score at least one goal so we could celebrate. I don’t think many Scottish people thought we would get out of the group stages anyway.

i also think we have stolen the hearts of the Bostonians. We have family who visited Boston for the first two games and they said that they were so welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere with the fan zone and the bars was amazing.

PomplaMouse · 27/06/2026 08:00

In the spirit of the thread...

Qualifying for the first time in 28 years because the world cup was expanded by 12 teams, only to be among the first 12 sent home, suggests it wasn't much on an achievement...

I thought it was expanded by 16 teams

Lentilcakes · 27/06/2026 08:47

Support who you like, but why would you ‘never’ support England - sounds like you hate the country you live in!
I only have a passing interest in the World Cup (don’t follow football generally but DH does) but still support England and will watch the knock-out matches.
i was chatting to my cleaner about it, she’s Spanish and supports Spain although she’s been here 10 years. Have no issue with that but if she was vehement in her views about never supporting England I’d find it a bit odd.

It was 16 teams actually and Scotland were top of their table to qualify so we did deserve our place there and would have been there if it was 32 teams anyway.

I think only the best 16 should qualify. You deserve the place but don't deserve to go through to the knockout stage. Well done Cape Verde though!
