To not support England?!

Feetballislife · 11/06/2026 10:12

Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER.
Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well.
If you live here then you should etc etc

YANBU - support who you like!
YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

I'll give you one thing - you're consistant!

You obviously love your country.

As I Iove mine. I'm lucky in this instance because my country is Scotland and Scots, like the Irish (and Welsh tbh) are loved wherever they go.

There is nothing wrong with people supporting Scotland and the Tartan Army.

They cause a wee lump in my throat tbh as you can see the joy they're feeling, and they never cause any bother. Locals everywhere love them. We got adopted at the Euros!

You love England - I'm kind of guessing you don't love Scotland.

Why don't you just support your own team instead of getting upset by people who don't?

The Scots were some of the most vicious slavers and colonialists

SusanChurchouse · 16/06/2026 20:57

I’m Scottish, kids are half English living in Scotland. They’re probably Scotland first but will switch allegiance to England when Scotland invariably get knocked out after the group stage. They’re not massively fussed though. I can’t bring myself to support England, despite having a lovely English DH. Feels intrinsically wrong.

My love for the Scotland team has waned over the years, I can’t seem to get that enthusiastic about them. I’m happy that they’re there, but not to the point of staying up to 4am! The whole Tartan Army bollocks pisses me off. I don’t care what flag you’re waving, large groups of pissed up (mostly) blokes taking over public spaces is never good.

I'm footy mad. I still support my childhood team, Liverpool. That's where I was born and grew up. I have lived in Hull for a long time now but I don't support Hull City. I am always delighted to see them doing well, it's just so good for the city but my loyalties remain with LFC. Can't see how OP is any different to me.

But do you absolutely hate Hull city and all the people living there whilst you live there? That is the difference. Not a Hull supporter but nice to see them promoted.

I predict a draw tonight. Croatia and England are the best in the group. Croatia are decent.

not other city went through what we went through over hillsborough and that wasn’t just the thatcher issue it went on for years!!

Liverpool was also the worst city effected by the managed decline

I live in a dock area. Nobody gave a shit about that either. Still don't think it means being anti English. Anti Westminster is more understandable.

Onefairfish · 17/06/2026 07:35

I don’t support any team as I have no interest in football. Also, my support or non support has no impact whatsoever on the outcome of any game, so it affects no one.

Bitchcraft · 17/06/2026 07:44

Haha I'm not from here but I became a British citizen a couple of months ago. I'm supporting England and Scotland. 😁 I'm not that fussed overall but it's good fun.

It’s not just about the docks though for us! they literally wanted the whole city evacuated and effectively closed down.

read up about how this city was treated by everyone when the hillsbourgh happened and then maybe you’d have some understanding of why we isolate ourselves

Flamingcoming · 17/06/2026 12:15

I am not interested in football, but I do wish our national team the best. I think your attitude is churlish, OP. You live and work in England. You can support whatever country you come from, of course, but it’s a bit mean spirited not to also support the place where you live as well. You can support both. To hope Scotland do well - that is fine, but to say you support Scotland and not England, well, like I say, churlish, silly and creating an atmosphere in the office just for the sake of being contrary. An irritating personality trait.

How the city was treated by ‘everyone’ ?

Dideon · 17/06/2026 12:22

There are millions of us from de-industrialised areas that suffered mass unemployment in the 80’s/90’s . The majority of us who follow the football will be rooting for our national team.. England.

I don't think she's obliged to support England even if she's chosen to live there. That's up to her, and nobody really cares. But going out of her way to let everyone know she's 'anyone but England' is juvenile and attention seeking.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 17/06/2026 12:34

I’m Scottish, now living in England with my English husband and our two England‑born children.

My Scottish family have always held tightly to tradition, cultural pride, and the preservation of Scottish heritage — something I don’t see reflected in the same way here in England.

English culture expresses tradition differently. It’s more subtle, less tied to national identity, and varies a lot from region to region.

From what I’ve seen, many English people don’t grow up with a strong sense of national heritage unless they actively look for it, and I’ve rarely met anyone who has.

Meanwhile, the Tartan Army continues to show the world what Scottish pride looks like — passionate, united, and unforgettable. Win, lose, or draw, we support our country with everything we’ve got.

I’ll always support both Scotland and England, but the level of national pride Scotland carries is something England simply doesn’t share in the same way.

I did not know this! How amazing. I’d love to know more; are there any books or documentaries you would recommend?

Make sure you read up on Derek Hatton as well, might add to your knowledge of Liverpool.

PomplaMouse · 17/06/2026 15:39

Half the fun of sports is lording your team's successes over rival fans. The "let's all hold hands and support each other" stuff is a bunch of shite.

Thanke for the reminder. He's like the English version of Tommy Sheridan!

Differentforgirls · 17/06/2026 17:40

To the England supporters, what are your songs?

A favourite English league one of mine is “his name is Rio and he watches from the stand” 🤣

What are your national ones?

Maybe it isn't as simple as national pride for the Scottish fans, more likely amazement that they actually made the WC after a lifetime!

One of two incidents about which the adult me feels a bit of shame happened in the 1950s, our team had won the quarter final of the FA cup and Wolves, the opponants, were in their coach after the match. Their captain was in tears and we were dancing around laughing at him. Sorry Billy Wright but in my defence I had just turned 8!
OH was hitch-hiking through Germany in July 1966, they didn't get many lifts on WC Final day!

Yeah it can definitely be misplaced. Some ribbing before a game is fine - i shared an AI photo of myself in a Croatia top into a few WhatsApp groups with English friends AS A JOKE before the match when spirits were high. I inevitably got dogs abuse afterwards.

I have lots of business associates that are English and some Scots too. I am Irish. The Euros were on, I'd paid FA attention as we weren't there and I'm not bothered about football especially anyway. But my DH is English so I was vaguely aware of England being knocked out the day before. Then we were on a Zoom call together.

The English people on the call are big footie fans, always squabbling about their premiership teams etc but obviously united in supporting England for the euros. They looked gutted. A Scottish guy came onto the call lording it over then that they had been booted out saying stupid stuff like everyone hates England and the rest of Europe was cheering.

It was absolutely bizarre and I was very embarrassed for him.

This is a big part of it in Ireland for sure.
