To not support England?!

Feetballislife · Today 10:12

Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER.
Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well.
If you live here then you should etc etc

YANBU - support who you like!
YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

Why? I love football. I've been a fan of my domestic team since I was a nipper. I don't live in my home city and haven't done for a long time. Should I have just started supporting the local team here where I live now instead?

This woman is still whatever nationality she is, despite living in England. Are all the expats in Spain waving Spanish flags for the world cup? Ditto those in Saudi. Its a bizarre notion.

No but I'd assume that the Brits living in Spain would have a bit of affection for the country they made their home and if England hadn't qualified I'd assume they'd be supporting Spain

Every. Single. Time 🙄

And yet they think the 'whip up a Scotland/England bun fight' thread is so original 🥱

Yep, every 4 years like clockwork 🥱

Walkyrie · Today 10:30

It’s boring now, OP.

2chocolateoranges · Today 10:31

Support who you like.

Us Scottish fans know how to party (well according to Susanna Reid and her pals, We will be recovering from hangovers since we are all drunkards here in Scotland)

more like we will be partying for every game, no alcohol required.

No Scotland No Party!

OneEagerLeader · Today 10:31

It's weird that you're making such a point of not supporting England.

HelpMeGetThrough · Today 10:31

I’m English and couldn’t give a shit whether we win or lose.

I won’t be watching any of it. Some colleagues of mine can’t understand it and think I should be hoping they win. As I said to them, that’s a you problem, not my problem.

x2boys · Today 10:32

Ok
The anyone but England threads do get a bit tiresome everytime theres a internstional tournament

That's the weird, performative part of what the op is saying.

Why make the comment, do you just like drama!

Why assume that though? Why assume someone has to hold some affection for where they live too? For many people where they live is determined by their job, family or partner and may not be where they'd actively choose to be otherwise.

I actively dislike the whole England football fan culture and I'm English. Perhaps OP feels similarly.

WhatAMarvelousTune · Today 10:32

I’ve no interest in football and don’t really care if England win (in the same way I wouldn’t care if they won the world bowling championships or whatever. No malice, just no interest).
But I do find people’s “anyone but england” “I never ever support England in anything ever!!!!” mildly tedious.

Tryagain26 · Today 10:34

My husband is English and doesn't support England he supports a different country
Support whoever you want or be like me and don't support any team.

As if the culture of other European countries football fan bases are any different/better? 😂

Yeah I think it's very strange to not have any affection whatsoever for a country you choose to live in.

Paris this last couple of weeks is a great example… 😬

NimbleHiker · Today 10:34

I am not supporting anyone in the world cup because i don't like football.

Strangerthanfictions · Today 10:36

The main aspect of the Scottish team is supporting them 😂😂 so I get why people like to join in supporting us, no Scotland no party 🎉 🎉 I have found English colleagues and friends very rattled about Scottish people not supporting England, it would be nice if we all lived together in harmony and politics wasn't a factor, but for most Scots we have grown up being dwarfed and marginalised on a national level by England and made to feel like the much inferior little brother, so it's like siblings, could be the closest thing to you but you'd still grudge them winning. Also we keep getting the fallout of their shitty prime Ministers.

Feetballislife · Today 10:38

LizardyGuts · Today 10:16

Depends how long you've lived in England I suppose. Two years - it's normal that your outlook is still international. Twenty years - a bit unusual that you don't want to support the national team of the country you have made home (as well as your country of origin if applicable).

But 'unusual' is your choice, and shouldn't be viewed as some kind of personal or national insult by others.

30! But I’m not English so…

I was born in England but to Scottish parents, you know who I'm supporting 🤣 As my Uncle always said (Scottish but living in London) "There's no Scot as Scottish as one who left"

Aye, it’s funny how the most passionate scotch so often choose not to live there.

Sean Connery, Alan Cummings, Nicola Sturgeon…

Why would English people want Scots to support England? Of course they're not going to. But the op isn't Scottish.

Needmorelego · Today 10:38

I live in London and my daughter's primary school was full of kids whose parents were from other countries. Sometimes one parent from one country and the other from a completely different one.
Asking the children "who's your team" was always a fascinating conversation.
Sometimes it wasn't England or their parent/s country but another one (often Brazil 😂).
One year their classroom was set up with flags of all the nations and photos of some of the children with "I'm supporting....." stuck to them.
To me.... that's what it's all about.
Having fun and celebration.
Obviously if you are watching an England match in a public place you shouldn't be booing them or anything because that's rude.

I'm fairly well travelled and have been to football matches in most European countries. The football culture is not the same in the majority of those countries.

One of the places I work frequently is in a country whose team are not in the world cup. Most of the people there seem to be supporting whoever they've drawn in the office sweep.

It's really fucking odd to think anyone has any right to dictate who other people should support in a football tournament. It's even odder to be offended by someone not supporting the same team as you. Actually it's pathetic.

ConcernedForWales · Today 10:39

I will be rooting for Scotland. Also supporting Brazil. And Japan. But I will give England a cheer if they do well.

AnonymityAnonymity · Today 10:40

I'm English born and bred but I'm a very long time resident of Scotland

I support Scotland in all sports. Not because I feel a duty to because I live here but because I identify as Scottish.
If i'm watching a sporting competition Scotlandarent't taking part in i generally support the under dog . I don't support England in anything really.

I totally agree OP you should support whoever you want at the World Cup.

Feetballislife · Today 10:41

I’ll also be supporting the European country I got in the sweepstakes! There’s prizes… plus they have an actual shot at winning.

support who you want or don’t want. It doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.

but there’s always the ‘urgh, I’d never support England/watch the number 1 series on the streaming apps/listen to a really popular, world record selling band’ who can’t simply not enjoy those things and carry on with their lives, but have to make it known how different they are whilst sneering down amongst the people that do.

It’s all a bit strange, isn’t it?
the performance some people go to in an attempt
to stand out from the crowd.
