AIBU to think teal is an awful choice for interiors?

The colour teal - it is the work of the devil!!! I have no idea why this colour is so popular because it is just GROSS 🤮

watching Interior Design Masters last night and was like ‘Sophie Noooooooo’.

Im not sure why I find it quite so appalling!
No offence if you’ve decorated your house in teal, I’m no interior designer and my home is pretty average but …. Shudder

I love teal. I don't think it would work in my house, but in the right room, it looks stunning.

I love teal too. But I love your username more!

WhereYouLeftIt · 10/06/2026 17:42

We have a teal bedroom - it gives it a bit of a 1930s vibe. I really like it!

But - it's a fair-sized room, south facing and with lots of light. Had it been north-facing I probably wouldn't have gone with teal.

@Thechaseison71 , i could cope with beige but not magnolia. I like a pale yellow but it needs to be yellow not a yellowish off-white. Teal's not for me.

Yellow of any shade isn't for me

offtodreamland · 10/06/2026 18:02

I like teal, but I wouldn't paint walls a dark colour. I've done it before and regretted it, so now I keep walls light and opt for dark/daring colours in furniture, curtains, and decorative objects that aren't as permanent or as likely to overwhelm. I'm sure some dark painted or wallpapered rooms are lovely, but I prefer my something less 'statement' for my own home.

Love your bedroom! Love your cat! Love the view! 😃

Thank you!! I love it, it's south facing and we are on the canal/marina so as the light bounces off the water and onto our teal walls it's like the ocean.

I've become braver with colour in our home, my lounge is a mixture of soft blues, mauve and we have a soft teal sofa LOL.

After years of renting and having magnolia or grey I am embracing some colour!

Yes. If you see a grumpy-looking woman walking by muttering 'The houses looked nice when they were brick' give us a wave.

Unfortunately it was rendered before so we had to just redo it as it would cost too much to repoint.
I actually say someone clean their bricks with an acid wash, and I thought they looked better dirty 😂😂

It is one of the best names on here, @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack.

Though as I always imagine you as Alison Steadman chewing scenery and crying 'You have no compassion on my poor nerves!' it is invariably slightly surprising when you post with eminent good sense and no demands for Hill's attendance or nudge nudge wink wink remarks about liking a red coat.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 10/06/2026 18:43

As a feature wall it’s fine. I know people who have all teal in a room, not my taste. Even a teal sofa isn’t my taste. There’s worse though, bright red which my best friend’s ex had in his living room on all 4 walls, I sometimes slept over there in that room and never slept well.

Catladywithacat · 10/06/2026 11:51

teal is a beautiful colour like a peacock

That’s more of a dark teal to me.

HaddockDiem · 10/06/2026 20:34

looks like it’s me that’s the weirdo ):

Each to his own - my decor certainly isn’t to everyone’s taste that’s for sure.

You're not a weirdo, @HaddockDiem .

mumumental · 10/06/2026 21:23

I love it in small doses. Not 4 walls. It’s a great colour (especially the paler versions of it) in east facing spaces, as it doesn’t feel cold.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 10/06/2026 23:51

@Callipygion That’s because style costs and boring grey and white takes no time, effort or imagination.

Kokonimater · 10/06/2026 23:55

I love teal and turquoise and dark blue. Gorgeous

My sister had a green car once, and she said people were always pulling out in front of her - a few near misses and an accident (not her fault!). She thought it was maybe because she lived rurally and people didn’t see her?!

Isn’t dark green sometimes labelled as invisible green!?

TheTealHiker · 11/06/2026 00:13

Despite my name I don't like teal for decorating. IMO it's either too dark or too loud.

However, I have quite a few clothes in that colour. 🙂

2pence · 11/06/2026 00:14

My bathroom is teal and white. It’s painted to match a beautiful teal, royal blue, silver and white oil painting of a shoal of fish from Mexico that hangs over the bath. It’s beautiful. Gutted it’s going out of fashion but yes, we did decorate it 10 years ago and nothing lasts forever does it?

I love dark colours and use Red and Green where I can. The entire back of my house is lighter, a sage green that blends into the garden. From what people are saying here my house is ugly but people who visit always comment on how beautiful it is. Each to their own I suppose.

I love teal and my living room is teal. it isn;t dark at all. The room is South facing and it is lovely. ONe wall (facing the window) is a darker colour called French turquoise and the other walls are morris blue (which is more green than blue)

The colour scheme is always complimented.

Edited

I love French Turquoise! We used it on all the walls of the main bedroom of our last-but-one house.

I didn't have a problem with the teal colour of Sophie's hall walls per se, but I wouldn't have chosen that particular colour for that space. The animal print ceiling was awful! Otoh, Lia's hall was very boring.

We hate white (or grey!) rooms and have always decorated using deep, saturated colours as we prefer them plus imo they suit the period houses we've owned. Currently we're renovating a Georgian cottage and so far we've used Edward Bulmer Pompadour (dark, almost burgundy pink) in the kitchen (walls and base cabinets), F&B De Nimes colour-drenched in bedroom 2 and Edward Bulmer Nicaragua (pink) in the snug. I love how they've turned out.

For our other living room where we watch tv/listen to music we have a teal velvet three seater sofa and an Arts & Crafts two seater in dusky pink with red applique flowers, plus a very colourful antique Persian rug. Cushions are primarily a mix of blues and reds. We're going to be using some amazing vintage Art Nouveau wallpaper in a deep turquoise/teal and black on all the walls. The woodwork will be F&B Vardo.

I have teal in one bedroom and I love the colour but on its own I think it looks a bit dated. With terracotta or red it looks a bit more modern but I’m surprised people are still decorating with it as I bought the teal accessories 15 years ago 🙈

I was going to say I like Teal but I think maybe that's because I'm an older millennial. I think it probably dates me.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/06/2026 01:06

I don’t think it’s a horrible colour. It’s quite nice in the right scenario.

I think it’s rare that you can completely write off a colour entirely.

But it’s personal choice really.

Most of my house is various pale blue ish shades because I find it restful.

FourCatMama · 11/06/2026 01:39

I LOVE teal! I have teal sofas and my fireplace is painted that color

Feelinhothothott · 11/06/2026 02:03

"No offence" so what is the aibu, or the point of the thread? Some people like teal, some don't & prefer other colours 🤷‍♀️

canuckup · 11/06/2026 02:15

I adore teal

But I do think if you have a small house and an entire room is teal, then yes, it wouldn't be good

Big room and one teal wall, fine
