AIBU to be fed up with the heatwave panic?

I'm fully aware that ots of people are goign to tell me I am BU but my god, I am so tired of the trauma over this heatwave.

The endless facebook posts (and MN) about if someone dares to take a dog out in the heat - my local page had pictures of three dogs, looking pretty relaxed, albeit with their tongues hanging out, and a story about how she cornered the woman who had gone into the shop (to buy fags! [gasp]. If that's even true.) and then the woman was rude to her and basically 500 posts agreeing how awful those poor dogs must be finding things.

The people who can't leave the house because it's too hot.

The trauma about whether the kids should be allowed out because it's too hot for them.

Blah blah blah.

It's hot. Yes, it means you have to adjust a few things. Yes, you might not lke it. But it's not the end of the bloody world. I don't like the cold. But it doesn't cause me to be completely unable to do anything, go anywhere, or let my children do anything.

”Their” buildings aren’t made for it at all. They are regular houses with AC. That’s it. We all just need to get AC.

Worsening global heating with AC?

Yes I’d judge and be disgusted In anyone for taking their dog out in 32 degree heat you go throw a big fur outfit on have no access to water and go bare foot on fhe burning pavement and then tell me how your feeling what an inconsiderate person you are.

everyone is entitled to feel how they feel and dogs certainly shouldn’t be walked. I hope you don’t have a dog for their sake

Ours went out at 8am, they were fine. I’m sick of all the dramatics too. We get so little glorious weather and some people begrudge those of us who enjoy it the tiny bit we do get.

Im mot panicking, my body cannnot 'carry on as normal '

when you have a serious medical event/condition, that changes your body and your whole fucking life, get back to me again to tell me how easy it is. Or to the 5 year old who is very ill due to her life long heath issue being made much worse by the heat.

Exactly.
Some people are so ignorant about how the heat can affect others. Or perhaps they just don't care.
I'm fortunate in that I don't have any medical problems, but I simply cannot cope with heat like I used to. I'm late 50s, live in a very built-up and not very pleasant area and my flat is like a greenhouse in this weather. I do all the sensible things, but it is just way too hot for me. Effectively my life is on hold until it cools significantly.
Being unwell or unable to tolerate extreme heat is not a choice; it's plain reality for many people.

And it's not all about you either. The majority of people don't have medical conditions that prevent them going out in the heat

The majority of people are immune to UV? When did that happen? Have you informed the NHS their warnings are wrong?

I wish tge panic, on the lead up, was about water safety. 4 different incidents over the weejend acrosd England.

Yes this is the justified concern IMO.

i would be lying though if I said a misanthropic part of me wasn’t secretly enjoying the hysteria of posters who are very quick to dismiss posters who complain about the endless grey and rain with ‘no such thing as wrong weather just wrong clothes’ ‘it IS the UK, what do you expect’ ‘there’s nothing you can’t do in the rain with the right mindset’

Well they’ve suddenly changed their tune about the irrelevance of weather conditions haven’t they?

Anyahyacinth · 26/05/2026 19:27

Gamerlady · 26/05/2026 17:06

People just need to be quiet and make the most of it. Whatever the weather someone is always complaining about it and im tired of it. This heatwave has been glorious and even though its been hot it's not forever, the temperature is going to come down in the next day or two. People have windows and fans , use them. Like the poster im loving it and making the most of it.

You think everyone has windows and fans ? Everywhere they go? At work?

Thepeopleversuswork · 26/05/2026 19:28

I have sympathy for people who suffer from medical conditions but for healthy adults yes the whingeing is annoying.

My DP is like this and he turns hot days into an endless drama, insisting on putting wet towels on, sitting next to the fan and refusing to go outside. Its intensely irritating and self indulgent and I have to bite my tongue to restrain myself from telling him to man up.

5128gap · 26/05/2026 19:29

Its hot enough to have to make adjustments, curtail some activities for comfort and health and be mindful of the welfare of children and animals. I'd rather people got a bit overzealous about that than people and animals came to harm. Scoffing at those who are following government guidance to take precautions isn't a sign of superiority. It just means you're probably pretty robust with no one vulnerable to look out for.

.... .or about to have a nasty shock and be taken to an overwhelmed A&E with heat stroke or another heat related issue

Judgejudysno1fanagain · 26/05/2026 19:49

Thank you everyone for your kind messages towards my little girl. Its been truly horrible these last few days. 😔 hope it gets easier for you all with medical conditions too 🌹

Stelladid · 26/05/2026 19:51

Is it just me who thinks that those who post these sorts of questions which dismiss the needs and problems of others, do so just to be provocative? They must be very bored to need to do this.

Same here. The elderly and people with health conditions die in heatwaves, even in this country. There are also a lot of people on medications which make temperature regulation very difficult. It’s good to see this being publicised at last as it was news to me that it was a thing even though I knew how effected by the heat I am.

Worsening global heating with AC?

Every house in the uk could get ac and it wouldn’t make one jot of impact to climate change. Same way if every car in the UK goes electric.
Anyway, you want to sweat and suffer in the name of the environment you crack on. I’ll think of you in my 20deg living room.

MPforTitipu · 26/05/2026 19:54

The BBC are giving out figures for deaths 'due to the heatwave' but don't mention that more people die of cold weather than hot. 9 x as many, statistically.

And of course those people who have medical problems that are worse in the heat need to take precautions, just as those do who have problems that are worse in the cold. Mostly they know this and the best way to deal with the heat or cold. But it's not as if they won't suffer if other people don't admit to enjoying the heat (or the cold) when it comes along.

DoubleFunMum · 26/05/2026 19:55

I have 2 kids sick with heat stroke tonight after their school, in their wisdom, went ahead with sports day and left them standing out in the heat without shade, with a five minute break for 200 of them to refill their water bottles indoors, for 4 hours! Livid doesn't even cover it. In my opinion, some people need to pay a little more heed to the conditions!

Surely it wouldn’t have been 32c at 8am. Are you saying that people who judge harshly those who walk their dog in 32c begrudge people enjoying hot, sunny weather? No one has said that. Just that dogs shouldn’t be walked in high heat and that some people don’t cope well with it 🤷‍♀️

🤣🤣🤣 we Brits do love a good moan though!

I appreciate what you are saying, unfortunately I spent my Thursday and Friday in the pregnancy triage unit with high blood pressure and my partner can’t seem to manage multi-tasking and looking after a toddler if I’m not around.

I think as well my mentality is always “ oh the weather report says we’re having good weather this weekend, we shall see!” Because I’m such a pessimist 😬

I'm sorry your BP is high & you had to spend two days in the triage unit. This weather will not be helping! How are you now? When are you due?

some men people are really not good at multi tasking! Still if he concentrated on looking after your toddler at least he got his priorities right!

I get mine delivered by Tesco, it took a wee while to get it organised so it's a 5 minute job now. I personally find them brilliant & post stroke they have been amazing & I don't know what I'd have done without it!

I think with British weather 'let's see' is the best thing! Sensible not pessimistic!

🌷

That’s loverly. I’ll stick with my Masters in Geophysics thanks.
And my AC

The article I posted down thread says the threat from heat and excess deaths is projected to overtake that for cold temperatures...I think its possible to care about both. Its not an either or choice

Hatty65 · 26/05/2026 19:58

I grew up abroad (rural Oz) and we didn't have aircon. I'm always quite surprised at the fuss people make in Britain when it's hot, but each to their own.

I think if you struggle with either the cold or the heat then there are adjustments you need to make to cope with it. People who live in very hot or very cold countries know this and are used to it.

anxiousflyer · 26/05/2026 20:03

Cosimarocks · 26/05/2026 19:08

It’s not the end of the world…

I mean, it sort of is. Seeing as this heatwave is one of many we are having and will continue to have, alongside other extreme weather conditions going forwards as part of the climate crisis, I suppose it rather depends upon whether you have any care for your own, you children’s and your grandchildren’s future. I do, and I find the knowledge or what’s to come and our inaction in tackling it completely terrifying. Ultimately, it will lead to sea level rises, a loss of biodiversity, food shortages, water shortages, and ultimately billions of deaths and a pretty awful existence for those that remain.

In the shorter term (now) it means a rise in skin cancer dangers and heat exhaustion, failing crops (as did the extraordinary amount of rain earlier), increased wildfires and dangerous heat for children and the elderly in particular. It means that our houses and offices and schools and hospitals and care homes and transport are hideously over hot and humid. It means that pets and farm animals and wildlife are at risk.

It’s about 10 c hotter here (UK) than it should be, it’s 45c in India (which is close to too hot for the human body to function).

What really pisses me off is that in a few days time when it drops to 20 or so (lovely!) and possibly rain comes, people will moan that the summer has gone already (its actually spring still, but hey).

But you crack on and enjoy it. Or, get some education, learn about your world and also learn some common decency and stop moaning about those who are worried or struggle in the heat.

This.
