AIBU to be fed up with the heatwave panic?

I'm fully aware that ots of people are goign to tell me I am BU but my god, I am so tired of the trauma over this heatwave.

The endless facebook posts (and MN) about if someone dares to take a dog out in the heat - my local page had pictures of three dogs, looking pretty relaxed, albeit with their tongues hanging out, and a story about how she cornered the woman who had gone into the shop (to buy fags! [gasp]. If that's even true.) and then the woman was rude to her and basically 500 posts agreeing how awful those poor dogs must be finding things.

The people who can't leave the house because it's too hot.

The trauma about whether the kids should be allowed out because it's too hot for them.

Blah blah blah.

It's hot. Yes, it means you have to adjust a few things. Yes, you might not lke it. But it's not the end of the bloody world. I don't like the cold. But it doesn't cause me to be completely unable to do anything, go anywhere, or let my children do anything.

The whole thing about dogs and heat drives me insane. It's the same every year and the vitriol is unbelievable.

Some dogs cope much better with the heat than others. Some dogs are rescued from countries that are much hotter. Unless you see a dog clearly in distress, stay out of it.

I think this is it. My dog could cope with the heat when she was younger, but yes, not long walks. But so many people just get completely OTT and dramatic. Babies left in car - obviously bad - but I met someone who said she doesn't allow the children out of the house in this weather. At all.

Ditto, of course people who struggle with medical conditions have every right to find it hard. Just as people who tend to get chilblains kr have Reaunards must hate winter. But thats not who I am talking about.

I'm with you OP. I've had a supplier cancel a meeting today because of the heat. I don't understand the fuss.

It's a bit warm. It is managed easily by drinking plenty of water and dressing appropriately. Take things slowly, don't rush, carry on as normal.

I ran a charity 10k yesterday. Not fast but I still ran it. It was certainly warm but nothing to panic about.

JustAnUdea · 26/05/2026 18:05

I wish tge panic, on the lead up, was about water safety. 4 different incidents over the weejend acrosd England.

OriginalSkang · 26/05/2026 18:06

Sounds like this could you cured by you just closing facebook

thetruthshallsetyoufreebutfirstitwillpissyouoff · 26/05/2026 18:08

I get it OP, it's the same for any weather. Appropriate clothing and carry on (medical conditions aside)! I took my eldest into our nearest city today as I'd already booked stuff before realising how hot it would be. It was fine - light clothing, took our time, stopped more often for drinks than we otherwise would have. Both had a great day.

I am wearing very light clothes and drinking water and staying in a room with the curtains closed.

Yet I feel sick and haven’t had more than an hour or so sleep each night over the last few days.

Please tell me how I can suddenly be okay with this?

Do you not get that some people struggle more than others and there might be good reason for someone to cancel a meeting, even if you don’t suffer

To be fair to the supplier... did they cancel because of the heat or because they wanted to enjoy the heat? 😆

sunnydisaster · 26/05/2026 18:11

I could barely step on my patio barefoot as it’s so hot! So just imagine how a dog’s paws would feel. My cat literally runs over the patio stones or walks under the chair as it’s more shady.
Take a dog out early or later in the day.
My house is set up for cold, not heat, it gets very hot so the only place to be is in the shade in the garden.
I’m not panicking- just taking precautions.

sunnydisaster · 26/05/2026 18:12

@Meadowfinch- London isn’t ’a bit warm’ - it’s fucking boiling!

This!

I just went out to bring the washing in & almost passed out, my neighbour saw me & came to help.

since my stroke I just can't tolerate the heat, but you know a few little adjustments & itll be fine 🙄🙄🙇🏻‍♀️

before the stroke i lived this weather. It's no fucking fun not being able to tolerate it any more, I'm very sad about it, just another thing to add to the list if many things I can't do or tolerate anymore 😢

OP's like this one just making things so much better. NOT.

It’s bloody lovely! I am enjoying every second of it.

I wouldn’t take a dog out for a walk during peak sun though…

Edited

I'm (genuinely) pleased you're enjoying it! So you should (as you can) wring every bit of pleasure/enjoyment out of it. 🌷💕

We have two dogs, one a foreign rescue from a hot country and one a traditional British breed. The rescue hates the heat and can't cope at all and the British one is fine with it!

I think even the dogs have the mad dogs and Englishmen mentality about sun exposure! 😂The one used to the heat is the more sensible one.

At about 3.30 today I saw a bloke walking his dog…with a very new looking baby (max 3 months) strapped to his chest in a carrier…

I went to do my weekly shop at the weekend and came home with just cupboard things as the whole of the UK seems to have gone bbq crazy. I tried 3 different shops for just chicken breasts and the meat isles were empty. Bread shelves were empty, salad isles contained the cast offs nobody wanted. My partner has gone tonight after he finished work to see if he can get us our normal weekly shop.
Im not at all against enjoying the warm weather but it’s just taken to extremes when it happens.

My mate was complaining the queue was out the butchers door & down the street on Saturday morning. I said it was hardly bloody surprising on a bank holiday with lovely weather & asked why they hadn't gone on Friday (neither of them working Friday)...

I wasn't saying you shouldn't have gone for your weekly shop at the weekend or been frustrated you couldn't get it!! It just reminded me about my mate!

Yes I’d judge and be disgusted In anyone for taking their dog out in 32 degree heat you go throw a big fur outfit on have no access to water and go bare foot on fhe burning pavement and then tell me how your feeling what an inconsiderate person you are.

everyone is entitled to feel how they feel and dogs certainly shouldn’t be walked. I hope you don’t have a dog for their sake

Yep dead right, we took our dog out to moorland and a river, loved it, yesterday it was to the beach, grass path & found a cove with no one on it and she went bonkers!

To OP, stay off SM, main TV news seems quite gleeful that the highest temp has been beaten!

Feel sorry for the elderly though, this heat aint good.

Sixpence39 · 26/05/2026 18:28

Dogs die terrible, scary deaths in this heat. It"s a very real issue. Many more have their feet pads burned on red hot tarmac. Anyone taking their dog out (other than early morning) deserves to be dressed up in a fur coat and left in the midday sun.

Judgejudysno1fanagain · 26/05/2026 16:59

I feel sorry for those in multiple floor flats with no air con. Heat rises and fans dont do anything except circulate hot air.

Like a previous poster, my daughter has a life long medical condition and its truly awful seeing how sick she is from the heatwave. She is on the sofa, with dark circles round her eyes weak and sick 😫 shes just 5.

Aww bless the poor wee mite. It's awful at 57 post stroke, but it doesn't compare to a 5 year old with a life long illness! 💕💕

🤣🤣🤣 we Brits do love a good moan though!

I appreciate what you are saying, unfortunately I spent my Thursday and Friday in the pregnancy triage unit with high blood pressure and my partner can’t seem to manage multi-tasking and looking after a toddler if I’m not around.

I think as well my mentality is always “ oh the weather report says we’re having good weather this weekend, we shall see!” Because I’m such a pessimist 😬

My little baby, schmooshkins don't have their soft pads on the hot tarmac.

Actually, they are laid out on the floor and not interested in anything, including food. It's cooling off, think thunderstorms are coming, but they are still lethargic and not interested.

MIL just text to say she has a migraine. She's 80 and I have to look out for her to make sure she's drinking plenty of water. Not sure if they have their fan on but I hope so!

Some dogs cope much better with the heat than others. Some dogs are rescued from countries that are much hotter. Unless you see a dog clearly in distress, stay out of it.

The official advice is anything between 25-30 is dangerous for any dog of any age and breed and walks should only happen before 8am or after sunset, and 30+ is severe risk of heat stroke which can very easily kill. Why intentionally put an animals in harms way? As family we're meant to protect them. Not to mention just the pure discomfort of being in such heat in a fur coat with no shade or water. Would you do that to yourself?

That's why theres "vitriol" - it's people looking out for a defenceless animal when their own family is too selfish to. If people would follow the advice they wouldnt get others commenting. Same people who take dog out in 30 degree heat are nowhere to be seen in torrential rain. Funny that.

Poor kid i hope she feels better soon. Flowers
My one bedroom top floor social housing flat

  1. Fire door and window restrictors. No gaps allowed for the former and windows only open a couple of inches Health and safety rules have turned flats into even worse sweat boxes.
  2. The fridge freezer. It cant cope in these temps and conks out Im damn sure the eco warriors dont like the idea of wasted food either.
  3. Bowel issues. Made a lot worse in this weather.
  4. Food stored in cupboards including the hall cupboard has to be kept an eye on too. It cant all be stored in the fridge and it isnt meant to be.
  5. Medication that has to be stored above 5c but below 25c

🌷. You poor thing, that sounds dreadful. I hope you're ok 💕

People just need to be quiet and make the most of it. Whatever the weather someone is always complaining about it and im tired of it. This heatwave has been glorious and even though its been hot it's not forever, the temperature is going to come down in the next day or two. People have windows and fans , use them. Like the poster im loving it and making the most of it.

Be quiet & make the most of it???

try reading the thread. It is making many of us with medical conditions ill. Which part of that should we make the most of.

Devaststingly it's making one posters 5 year old child with a life long medical condition very ill. But she should make the mistake of if it?

its not us that need to be quiet!

SlayTheJAway · 26/05/2026 18:45

I spent yesterday hiding thread after thread on here with people whinging on about the heat. These are the same people who come on here to ask if they should answer their own front doors.

It's cooling down significantly now. Currently 24 degrees and breezy. We have had some thunder but no rain.

Not here it's not, it's still 34°

flapjackfairy · 26/05/2026 18:53

well i have a child who has compromised lungs and he is literally unable to go out at all because he struggles to breathe in hot humid weather so yes for some of us it is more than a mild inconvenience.
And these heatwaves are only becoming more and more frequent and extreme. A few years ago 30 was a v rare occurrence whereas now it is a regular occurrence. It us limiting my families life quite significantly now
