AIBU to be fed up with the heatwave panic?

I'm fully aware that ots of people are goign to tell me I am BU but my god, I am so tired of the trauma over this heatwave.

The endless facebook posts (and MN) about if someone dares to take a dog out in the heat - my local page had pictures of three dogs, looking pretty relaxed, albeit with their tongues hanging out, and a story about how she cornered the woman who had gone into the shop (to buy fags! [gasp]. If that's even true.) and then the woman was rude to her and basically 500 posts agreeing how awful those poor dogs must be finding things.

The people who can't leave the house because it's too hot.

The trauma about whether the kids should be allowed out because it's too hot for them.

Blah blah blah.

It's hot. Yes, it means you have to adjust a few things. Yes, you might not lke it. But it's not the end of the bloody world. I don't like the cold. But it doesn't cause me to be completely unable to do anything, go anywhere, or let my children do anything.

Yes I’d judge and be disgusted In anyone for taking their dog out in 32 degree heat you go throw a big fur outfit on have no access to water and go bare foot on fhe burning pavement and then tell me how your feeling what an inconsiderate person you are.

everyone is entitled to feel how they feel and dogs certainly shouldn’t be walked. I hope you don’t have a dog for their sake

Stoicandhappy · 26/05/2026 16:49

It’s bloody lovely! I am enjoying every second of it.

I wouldn’t take a dog out for a walk during peak sun though…

Overtheatlantic · 26/05/2026 16:50

I agree. And then there’s the thread advocating for the banning of air conditioners. It’s two days of heat, then we will be back to 13 degrees and jumpers. And cosy fairy lights.

ScaredButUnavoidable · 26/05/2026 16:50

I don’t think anything you have listed implies people are panicked about a heatwave, it’s more like showing general concern for the well-being of animals and children. Awful, I know.

hahabahbag · 26/05/2026 16:52

I’m with you op to a point, it’s lovely warm weather. But the issue is our country isn’t set up for it, our homes retain heat. I can see dogs happily swimming in the marina from my window along with many teenagers who are diving in my the no swimming sign!

MauriceTheMussel · 26/05/2026 16:53

At about 3.30 today I saw a bloke walking his dog…with a very new looking baby (max 3 months) strapped to his chest in a carrier…

cauliflowercheeseplease · 26/05/2026 16:56

I went to do my weekly shop at the weekend and came home with just cupboard things as the whole of the UK seems to have gone bbq crazy. I tried 3 different shops for just chicken breasts and the meat isles were empty. Bread shelves were empty, salad isles contained the cast offs nobody wanted. My partner has gone tonight after he finished work to see if he can get us our normal weekly shop.
Im not at all against enjoying the warm weather but it’s just taken to extremes when it happens.

Whosthetabbynow · 26/05/2026 16:57

It’s hardly a “panic” is it. Some people don’t like extreme heat. Our homes aren’t built for it. I don’t understand why anyone would want to sit in a park in he blazing sun just as someone else might not understand my love of the Autumn/Winter. It is what it is for a few days. We’ll cope

KeyLimeCake · 26/05/2026 16:58

Stay off social media, it brings out the worst of everything always.

People shouldn't walk dogs (apart from early morning/late evening), it's too hot.
I'm finding it too hot and I'd to be able to go for swim somewhere. Besides that, I'm just getting on with things.

WellFineThen · 26/05/2026 16:59

I come from a very hot country and we had air conditioners everywhere but, also, there are warnings for the vulnerable like the elderly, children and pets. I think that's just part of heatwaves. Some don't realise how hot it is and get themselves and others into a mess. I remember when we went on holiday to Malta with MIL and she was fine and then, suddenly, we realised she was suffering from heat stroke.

Things happen fast.

Judgejudysno1fanagain · 26/05/2026 16:59

I feel sorry for those in multiple floor flats with no air con. Heat rises and fans dont do anything except circulate hot air.

Like a previous poster, my daughter has a life long medical condition and its truly awful seeing how sick she is from the heatwave. She is on the sofa, with dark circles round her eyes weak and sick 😫 shes just 5.

Anarchy99 · 26/05/2026 17:00

if you are cold you can put more layers on. Do you not see the difference between not liking the cold (which is easily remedied) and not coping in the heat?

Please share what people should ‘adjust’ as I would love to know.

But yes I complain because it makes me ill, I can’t sleep either.

Would you advocate walking a dog in 30 deg heat? Or would you leave your child in the car?

Somethingbland · 26/05/2026 17:02

Well i'm glad you and many many people are enjoying the heat OP. Hot weather is obviously your peference. But we are all different.
I'm not panicking over the heat OP. But it is seriously depressing me. That's how weather like this affects me. It's not a question of adjusting for me . It's a question of surviving.
Perhaps a bit of understanding for other people's point of view wouldn't come amiss.

Poor kid i hope she feels better soon. Flowers
My one bedroom top floor social housing flat

  1. Fire door and window restrictors. No gaps allowed for the former and windows only open a couple of inches Health and safety rules have turned flats into even worse sweat boxes.
  2. The fridge freezer. It cant cope in these temps and conks out Im damn sure the eco warriors dont like the idea of wasted food either.
  3. Bowel issues. Made a lot worse in this weather.
  4. Food stored in cupboards including the hall cupboard has to be kept an eye on too. It cant all be stored in the fridge and it isnt meant to be.
  5. Medication that has to be stored above 5c but below 25c
youalright · 26/05/2026 17:05

I think you're massively misusing the word trauma

Gamerlady · 26/05/2026 17:06

People just need to be quiet and make the most of it. Whatever the weather someone is always complaining about it and im tired of it. This heatwave has been glorious and even though its been hot it's not forever, the temperature is going to come down in the next day or two. People have windows and fans , use them. Like the poster im loving it and making the most of it.

Hotupnorth · 26/05/2026 17:06

I don't know about panicking as such but definitely the wittering on about it ad infinitum. It happens every year there's 2 consecutive days of sun. To be followed by much panicking about water shortages. Given the state of the water industry that panic''s pretty valid.

In the main the media needs to get a grip, it's very tiring, not least as it's only part of the UK.

RampantIvy · 26/05/2026 17:06

It's cooling down significantly now. Currently 24 degrees and breezy. We have had some thunder but no rain.

NimbleHiker · 26/05/2026 17:13

It is far too hot to walk dogs and uk homes are not equipt for heatwaves. Also it is difficult to get use to the heat. Most of this month has felt like winter where i live and now it feels like i am living in the tropics. I think that i would find it easier to deal with the heat if it warmed up gradually.

glitterpaperchain · 26/05/2026 17:13

You're fed up of people complaining about the weather so you started a thread to complain about people complaining about the weather

I'm gonna start one to complain about people complaining about people complaining about the weather

Except its not two consecutive days of sun.
During the summer of 2022, the UK experienced five distinct heatwave periods ranging from 3 to 16 days in length, which culminated in a historic national temperature record of (40.3^{\circ }\text{C}). 1, 2]
According to the UK Health Security Agency, the five heatwave episodes included:
Episode 1: 4 days (June 16 to June 19)
Episode 2: 16 days (July 10 to July 25), which included the most intense 2-day period of Level 4 extreme heat (July 18 and July 19)
Episode 3: 7 days (July 30 to August 5)
Episode 4: 10 days (August 8 to August 17)
Episode 5: 3 days (August 23 to August 25)
The UK experienced four distinct, relatively short-lived heatwaves during the summer of 2025, each lasting between 5 to 6 days. While these events were brief, they occurred throughout the season and resulted in the warmest overall UK summer on record. 1, 2, 3]
Breakdown of the 2025 heatwave events:
Heatwave 1 (Third week of June): Officially declared in mid-June, lasting about five days in central and eastern England before breaking with thunderstorms.
Heatwave 2 (Late June - Early July): This event lasted about six days for parts of Yorkshire and the Humber and five days in the East. A longer, more intense spell of this heatwave affected London and southern areas, peaking at 34.7°C between June 23 and July 2.
Heatwave 3 & 4 (July and August): Additional, intermittent heatwaves occurred during these months, pushing the overall summer average for the UK to a record-breaking 16.1°C. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

It rained almost every day from October to March, then was pretty chilly, so a few days of sunshine and warmth are lovely. I'm walking the dogs early then they spend the rest of the day alternating between baking in the garden and crashed out in the house.

I should have typed 3 days not 2 as that's officially a heatwave. My point was that there's no shortage of sunny days, heatwaves or otherwise and performative wittering. The media get excited every time.

Passaggressfedup · 26/05/2026 17:30

The whole thing about dogs and heat drives me insane. It's the same every year and the vitriol is unbelievable.

Some dogs cope much better with the heat than others. Some dogs are rescued from countries that are much hotter. Unless you see a dog clearly in distress, stay out of it.
