Is Andy Burnham reasonable to say only a small minority of women object to men being in their toilets? YABU he's right, YANBU he's wrong *titled tweaked by MNHQ at OP's request*

'I don't think that's a majority view. I think it's a minority view and quite a small minority view, actually. But it is a view so you can't completely ignore it. Possibly they might be women who have experienced male violence at some point in their life. I don't know, that's one way of looking at it.'

Andy Burnham backs men who identify as female using women's toilets

The Greater Manchester mayor said the idea that single sex spaces like toilets should be protected for biological women was a 'minority view'.

This is Mumsnet, there was only one way this vote was going to go. Are you new here OP?

@OpheliaWitchoftheWoods
OK. No point in me replying any more. I was just asking about one thing but now you are twisting that as 'people like you' and creating division when 'people like me' could have stayed on this thread and learnt something.

I'd prefer not to now.

If you didn't learn anything, that's on you, it's not down to the wording of other posters.

I hope you did learn something.

No. In fact without the support of hundreds of intelligent, informed, driven women right here, I would never have done this - https://www.thetimes.com/uk/law/article/father-sue-school-over-trans-pupils-using-female-lavatories-jz76f6r5m but I did.

Father may sue school over trans pupils ‘using female lavatories’

The father of a 15-year-old girl alleges that the unidentified secondary school in Brighton and Hove has breached safeguarding rules and equality laws

What's the implication here? You think it's wrong for women to want their own spaces?

The majority of women want single sex spaces to remain so. Mumsnet is mainly populated by women (the old fashioned kind). Get over it.

MNLurker1345 · 20/05/2026 11:36

@moto748e, well we have seen that AB says whatever he needs to say - his switch on rejoining the EU position.

He is a duplicitous, spineless example of a man, or is he actually a man, he might be confused, tomorrow he might be a frog, just like his wife is.

And his legs are nothing to show off.

titchy · 20/05/2026 11:36

You should be actively campaigning for AB - as you said on another thread, if he becomes PM, you reckon there’ll be a general election and then Reform will be in - which is what you want!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 20/05/2026 11:36

simpsonthecat · 20/05/2026 11:12

I was just talking about toilets actually.

I understand that. I was just pointing out that when women passively accept we have no right to expect privacy / safety / dignity from men when we've got our knickers round our ankles on a toilet, men like Burnham apply the same principles to when we're asleep on a hospital ward, undressing for swimming in a changing room or our daughters are changing for PE in a school changing room.

Once people claim it's only a tiny % of women who are bothered (despite the evidence to the contrary), then women assume that they have no voice and must consent to sharing facilities with men - including the predatory men.

PencilsInSpace · 20/05/2026 09:48

Andy Burnham can fuck right off.

Yeah this. I really really really hope he doesn’t get elected.

Does he actually understand what the word “minority” means? It’s the minority of trans activists who are causing all the BS and drama 🤦‍♀️

WildEnergySupplier · 20/05/2026 11:38

He's made a massive blooper IMO.

Every interviewer is going to ask him what his views on trans now is.

If he says he's changed his mind then he looks weak and could lose the left of his party.

If he says he still supports self ID, that won't go down well with the voters of Makerfield.

Jojoanna · 20/05/2026 11:38

Can’t stand Andy Burham ,, he’s a man who’s does not speak for me as a women ,, very entitled , shove over woman

TheFlyingPenguin · 20/05/2026 11:38

Believe it or not some men really do not want random men following women (such as their wives& daughters etc) into single sex spaces for females.

TheKeatingFive · 20/05/2026 11:38

elgreco · 20/05/2026 11:17

I think he is unreasonable.

Why do men who dress as women think they are unsafe in the male toilets?

Is there any actual data on rate of assaults?

Why are men dangerous in the men's toilets but perfectly safe in the women's?

Even if they are unsafe in the men's, why should that be made a woman's problem?

If men are treating other men badly, in men's spaces - surely that is entirely a men's issue to solve

BridgetPhillipsonIsACowardlyJobsworth · 20/05/2026 11:39

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 20/05/2026 09:47

Why is a man explaining what women apparently think?

Well, I assume Andy Burnham also speaks for all the females in his family, so perhaps he'd like to test his assertions and volunteer each and every woman and girl in his family to take one for the team?

He could start with public toilets, then perhaps move on to those women in his family who have employers who might sack them if they "say something unkind". Then, let's see how the school age girls in his family fare in "single-sex" toilets in school which actually include boys. Finally, he could volunteer the elderly women in his family who need medical or inpatient hospital care to stay on so-called single-sex wards or ask for a female doctor or carer for intimate care.

Let's see how he thinks about the rights of women after that.

The implication is that I'm sick of all the AIBU posts where people know exactly what the answer is going to be. Why not post in chat? It's gets just as much traffic without the fake naivety.

I never said I thought it was wrong.

ImABigOleBadLass · 20/05/2026 11:39

I voted YABU as this is a massive distraction and there are about a million more important things to be dealing with in the UK right now - this has been set up as a right wing dead cat.

If you really care about women and their rights, you'll stay well away from voting Reform, who are going to have to repay their Evangelical US backers with some anti-women, anti-abortion, pro-tradwife policies at some point. Farage has already been agitating about abortion control.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 20/05/2026 11:25

It should matter that a man is dismissing women’s concerns.

it should matter that someone who wants to be our prime minister will not support laws grounded in material reality but instead supports laws based on quasi religious beliefs that are detrimental to women.

It might matter to you but it does not matter to me. And I don't need to be told how to think, thanks.

VeganSteakAndFries · 20/05/2026 11:41

Of course he knows what ALL women think! TWAT.

Well I guess that's good.

But I still don't understand what your point is? There shouldn't have been a poll? We shouldn't react to what Burnham said? What?

Dogladyloveswine · 20/05/2026 11:42

Oh you mean a forum that is a majority of females are voting to not have males in spaces where they remove their underwear....?]

Maybe they know more about it than males who thinks being a female is reduced to their outward appearance.

Why wasn't this a 'distraction' and 'a million more important things to worry about' when men demanded access to women's spaces?

Why is it only a 'distraction' now that women want their rights back?

Funny, isn't it.

And you seriously think wanting single sex spaces makes women right wing? You genuinely believe that? 😵‍💫

Weirdly only got complicated the last 10 years. Before that it was pretty obvious...

Even weirder is how they all know who the women are, both when it suits them and when it doesn't. Even by telling us that not many women object to transwomen in women's toilets, he tacity admits that they aren't women. "Most people don't mind" and "It's only a small number" are admissions that they aren't women.
