I work in a Nice gastropub.

Last night a couple came in for a booked table. The booking notes had asked for sit on the edge of the main section of the restaurant. This isn't uncommon as we have live music on a Friday and it's a good viewing spot. It's a lively pub and busy restaurant.

They were in my section and I welcomed them, got chatting and they told me they we out to celebrate their 4 month anniversary. Champagne was ordered. A pleasant, attractive young couple having a lovely night out.

Then the mood changed a bit; the woman went to the loo and the man played with his phone while she did do.

When she came back he moved his phone to his lap and started to mess with it surreptitiously under the table.

It was so freaking obvious what was going on; her face became animated and she started squirming.

I went back to clear their starter dish and offered more drinks, just doing my job, but they were obviously observing me to see if I noticed.

I went down the civil professional and verging on brusque approach to them fro that point and tried to speed them through the meal to get them off the table quickly.

All the other servers that night were a level students and I wasn't going to expose them to that so I took full ownership of the table.

I can see how this would be a sexy thing to do with a partner if you can keep a poker face. Sounds as if she was being pretty performative though.

I know this isn't the point of the thread, but it's starting to irk me how perfectly nice and normal female names are starting to be used as insults. It's so sexist! It first started with Karen, and now it's Linda, Janet, Brenda, and I'm sure a few others. It's a chauvinistic trend that should be stamped out, not perpetuated!

It wasn't an insult. It was a (very online) reference that I am too tired to explain right now. Broadly I agree with you. A well known blockbuster movie has an entire sequence taking the piss out of my own name.

I work in the criminal justice sector and come across files of and men who have had sex with babies, dead bodies and animals 😂 There are all sorts of weird practices and fetishes out there. I’ve no doubt some couples do this but in reality the OP really has no idea what they were doing and it’s a really off the wall peculiar assumption to make 😂

I am surprised you didn’t go straight to your manager. This couple were behaving inappropriately to both you, colleagues and other diners. Added to which, you didn’t know if it was going to escalate. What if a child had seen this?

It’s hard to fully express an experience you’ve had in writing. Those saying the face could have been anticipation of food or some other issue really just need to take OP’s word for what she saw. It’s not like it’s something you’re on the look out for so it must have been obvious.

Also these vibrators aren’t new. They’ve surely been around for over a decade.

Surely the whole point of the product, though, is that people use it in public? Presumably, many users try to be more subtle about it and not make it completely obvious in a When-Harry-Met-Sally way what they're doing. If you're in a private bedroom behind closed doors, where would the fun be in trying not to let strangers see you, when they couldn't anyway?

A bit like with those ridiculous tiny bikinis where you're effectively naked but technically not - nobody buys those just to wear them in their own bedroom and get off on how much they're exposing themselves to themselves in private.

I've no idea if either of these are based on what actually happened or not; but if the product exists, people will clearly be buying it and using it.

Often, you get one person with lots of followers doing something seemingly obscure and random on TikTok and then, in no time at all, everybody is copying it.

I had assumed that they were chiefly intended for couples, where one of them is working away, to have remote, ahem, fun. 🤷‍♀️ 😅 That was my take on it, anyway. But I still maintain, if this happened, that involving unwitting and unwilling bystanders in one's "play" in public is most definitely not on. Call me a pearl clutcher all you want, I'd rather be that than crass and sleazy. 🤷‍♀️
