I work in a Nice gastropub.

Last night a couple came in for a booked table. The booking notes had asked for sit on the edge of the main section of the restaurant. This isn't uncommon as we have live music on a Friday and it's a good viewing spot. It's a lively pub and busy restaurant.

They were in my section and I welcomed them, got chatting and they told me they we out to celebrate their 4 month anniversary. Champagne was ordered. A pleasant, attractive young couple having a lovely night out.

Then the mood changed a bit; the woman went to the loo and the man played with his phone while she did do.

When she came back he moved his phone to his lap and started to mess with it surreptitiously under the table.

It was so freaking obvious what was going on; her face became animated and she started squirming.

I went back to clear their starter dish and offered more drinks, just doing my job, but they were obviously observing me to see if I noticed.

I went down the civil professional and verging on brusque approach to them fro that point and tried to speed them through the meal to get them off the table quickly.

All the other servers that night were a level students and I wasn't going to expose them to that so I took full ownership of the table.

Grim fuckers Do some people have no shame?

So, you didn't actually see anything or any body part etc.
They didn't actually say anything to you of a sexual nature, and they didn't try to show body parts or converse with any other members of staff or clients.

So at best, your post is 100% speculation and assumption.

Now, in your own words this, 'young attractive pleasant couple', are being vilified and called disgusting on a national website and called all sorts of 'disgusting'.

My money is on you either being jealous of their looks or relationship or, more than likely, this never happened at all.

What a ridiculous post. Op has hardly outed anyone. Would you like a sex act done in front of you without your consent, where it would be hard for you to comment on, and sized up to see your reaction?

Thredmill · 16/05/2026 15:48

Creepy people. Sad. Spilling the iced water on his lap is really the only way to respond, and serve them very fast so they are out of there pronto. Twats.

LoyalMember · 16/05/2026 15:48

What a sweetie wife. Do your job, and mind your own business, ffs...

Hallywally · 16/05/2026 15:56

How on earth do you know that’s what they were doing?! It’s quite a stretch to assume that. I’m not sheltered at all and wouldn’t have assumed that. Bizarre your train of thought went to that?!

UnctuousUnicorns · 16/05/2026 15:57

Dirty sods. Fine in the privacy of your own home, hotel bedroom, holiday accommodation etc. but in public? Just no.

Krevlornswath · 16/05/2026 14:32

Not a dig but could you not just have asked them if there was some sort of issue, as their behaviour had been noted within the restaurant and other diners/staff feel uncomfortable? I know they want people to see them but in practice I imagine it does take some of the fun out of it when you realise you are at risk of being booted out or reported to the authorities for public indecency.

I don't think I'd have been able to help but roll my eyes and give them absolutely nothing to be honest, other than to let them know at the end that they aren't welcome back to dine.

No they could not! Why should anyone have to, no one would expect this crass behaviour

TeaPot496 · 16/05/2026 16:02

Totally shit of them to put you in that position. Can you get them banned?

hallenbad · 16/05/2026 16:04

I always come back to the numbers. I don’t get who the 11% are who think this is OK. Feel for you OP. It’s so disrespectful and unpleasant

Owly11 · 16/05/2026 16:07

Couldn't you tell your manager and ask for them to be removed? It's gross public indecency. A restaurant doesn't have to serve people.

Well you are a little sheltered bc this is actually a thing.

She had a vibrator inside her and he was controlling it from his phone?

They obviously get off on the thought of being seen but the problem for these idiots is that it’s against the law. And of course just extremely disrespectful to you and other customers.

Plenty of places for that type of behaviour if they so desire.

She is trying to mind her own own business, they made the choice to involve her. That's part of the thrill for them. Some very weird takes on here.

SqueakyFromme · 16/05/2026 16:10

I’m speechless as to why they weren’t asked to leave, presumably this is a family establishment.

They would have loved a scene, this would have encouraged them even more. And the restaurant couldn't have proved it.

However the venue can and should make a note of their details and prevent them from booking again. No reason needed, manager's decision is final. Hotels do this all the time.

WednesdaysChild73 · 16/05/2026 16:13

I remember a colleague proudly telling us that her and partner did this at a barbecue on a weekend 🤢🤢🤢. We looked at each other like to say what the fuck, talk about over sharing!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 16/05/2026 16:13

I think I'm missing something, like the post is only half written. You say she became animated and started squirming. What do you mean by animated? How on earth do you know that it was sexual unless her behaviour was specifically sexual. People might 'become animated and squirm' on hearing a funny joke. It honestly sounds from the info given that you are just imagining it OP. What specifically did they do that was so weird and definitely sexual?

HyggeTygge · 16/05/2026 16:14

her face became animated and she started squirming.

Maybe the goat's cheese tartlet starter was just really really good?

Ew. That could constitute harassment of you in the workplace. Don't wanna hear it mate. All these pathetic wankers!

Melonmango70 · 16/05/2026 16:16

I didn't even know you could get vibrators that could be controlled by a phone! I'm a bloody dinosaur, clearly!

DavidStopActingLikeADisgruntledPelican · 16/05/2026 16:17

I don’t know how the law would view this but thinking about it, it’s a bit like flashing someone- they didn’t ask for it, don’t want it, and like the flasher these 2 grim bastards are doing it for their own sexual pleasure/power trip. Ugh.

Wingedharpy · 16/05/2026 16:17

I get animated and squirm in restaurants - usually when desert arrives - particularly if it's tiramisu.

No need to prove anything to ask them to go. They could simply have been quietly ushered out. Sure, they might have shouted a bit, but there's not much they can do if the restaurant has withdrawn their permission to be on the premises.

FKAT · 16/05/2026 16:18

They should have been taken the bill as soon as you clocked it - it will say over your door you have the right to refuse service to anyone.

I bet they bought champagne deliberately to make being thrown out less likely.
