To think DH shouldn’t have washed this?

We have garden furniture at the back of our garden with trees above , so over the winter it bears the brunt of the elements and is covered in bird crap etc.

DH has taken it off this morning and put it in the washing machine.

Is it me or is this really unhygienic given it’s covered in all sorts of crap?! He didn’t wash it down first .

Get him to put on an empty hot wash now to clean the machine out?

APatternGrammar · 07/05/2026 13:17

What has he actually put in the washing machine, assuming it can’t be the furniture, some kind of cover?

Yeah, the (fairly big) cover which is a cotton material.

Washing machines are excellent at getting rid of dirt etc. It's literally their purpose.

He might want to check the filter afterwards but otherwise, crack on!

ColdAsAWitches · 07/05/2026 13:31

He's washed it in a machine for washing things. I can't see the issue.

givemushypeasachance · 07/05/2026 13:32

I'd think it's analogous to washing reusable nappies - so you try to remove "solids", but there is still plenty of shit on the fabric. The washing process and detergent then removes that shit and leaves the machine clean to use again for whatever.

I’d be grateful if my husband knew where the washing machine was…

Use a washing machine cleaner afterwards?

dontmalbeconme · 07/05/2026 13:36

Washing machines exist to wash things. You're meant to put dirty things in them. That's literally the point.

kohlrabislaw · 07/05/2026 13:38

I would’ve brushed off the worst of it first. But put the machine on a hot wash with some disinfectant. No big deal.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 07/05/2026 13:40

It’s literally for washing things in, and is easy to clean as it can also… wash itself. Personally I’d have put the hose on it first but putting stuff in the washing machine to wash is a totally reasonable thing to do.

honeylulu · 07/05/2026 14:02

The purpose of washing machines is to wash dirt off fabric! Do you only ever put clean clothes in it?

What are the covers made from? All of ours say sponge clean only. The weatherproofing won't last a run through a machine.

That's what I'd be concerned about, ruining and or shrinking the covers, not getting a washing machine dirty.

Urgh I hadn’t even thought of that. I’ll ask him when he’s off his call.

That’s why men should leave the washing to the ladies!!

If you have any sons I feel genuinely sorry for the women that marry them with your nasty outdated attitudes

OneNaiceSnail · 07/05/2026 14:22

Actually I feel sorry for your daughters too..

Bloody hell. No wonder men run the world. Women are too busy fretting about laundry.

(Some women I should say!
