To think DH shouldn’t have washed this?

We have garden furniture at the back of our garden with trees above , so over the winter it bears the brunt of the elements and is covered in bird crap etc.

DH has taken it off this morning and put it in the washing machine.

Is it me or is this really unhygienic given it’s covered in all sorts of crap?! He didn’t wash it down first .

Urgh I hadn’t even thought of that. I’ll ask him when he’s off his call.

That’s why men should leave the washing to the ladies!!

I really hope that's sarcasm, all adults should know how to use a washing machine whatever their gender

Didn't realise being a woman means that I am born with laundry skills. Are you one of those tradwives who believes that only women should do household chores? What a regressive attitude!

Only if you have a stupid husband.

I would hate this. Washing machines get things clean yes but they're not magic. I think people put too much faith in them sometimes.

But what do you think happens with cloth nappies?

People who use them for their kids (which pre 1970 ish was everyone) aren't dying of shit borne disease left right and centre!

rainbowunicorn22 · 08/05/2026 18:06

Stick a washing machine cleaner through the washer and be grateful your husband does something

You could prob spray it with waterproofing spray available from outdoors stores🤞

Think mine learnt after divorce.

Oh goodness- like none of us have ever made a mistake when washing something 😬.
When something is that dirty sometimes the only thing to do is put it through a wash.

Mymanyellow · 08/05/2026 18:55

Usernamenotav · 07/05/2026 22:20

The literally purpose of a washing machine is to wash things that are dirty. Do you wipe yourself down before you go in the shower?

I mean tbf I’m not usually covered in bird shit.
I would have given it a wipe over before putting it in the machine. But it’s done now if you’re worried run a hit, empty wash before using it again.

I don't think anything will happen I just don't like the idea of it. I'd be surprised if there's absolutely no trace of anything left on an item if they took it to be forensically examined.

I'd have binned it tbh. Bird poo gives me the giant ick.

If you can use bleach in your machine, stick that in on a boil wash.

Bleach doesn’t work in water that’s too hot..

My DP can manage the washing machine fine thanks 🙄

Devondevs · 08/05/2026 20:28

DP says it’ll be fine but you could do a hot wash with nothing in afterwards if you’re concerned about bacteria, he said don’t use bleach or anything other than antibacterial fabric cleaner as it can damage the rubber seals.

He’s not a washing machine technician, just a man who does all the laundry in our house, washes clothes, bedding, curtains…etc.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 08/05/2026 21:35

If you wash any garden stuff again do the following.

1.Put your items in buckets of hot water with a good bio washing powder. ALDI is fine. Leave to soak overnight.

  1. Rinse thoroughly with hotter water..
Throw dirty water from buckets down an outside drain.
  1. .Put items on a hot wash 40 degrees in your washer with a tea spoonful full of Dettol.Normal spin cycle.

4.. When items are washed. If you can put them on a outside washing line to dry. Will smell nice and fresh.

  1. Use the washer cleaning cycle and some anti bacterial washer solution.

Newer type washers do not use the same amount of water than older models. This is old course to save energy and money.

You don't know what sort of animals have sat on your furniture. And l would feel the same.

Good for you.

Lesson learnt…put the cover on for next winter, that you didn’t bother doing 'last ' winter!

Oh give over. If he's capable of operating a phone, he's capable of checking the furniture cover.

The entire purpose of the washing machine is to get things clean. The enzymes in the washing powder/liquid/whatever are designed to eat away the dirt and remove it.

Run a 90° wash with a cleaner after if you're still squeamish.

Chiefangel · 09/05/2026 15:40

I would have got the crap off with an old scrubbing brush first and then sponged them down. The weatherproofing will be wrecked now from the washing machine and next winter, get a cover for the furniture.

GingerdeadMan · 09/05/2026 15:49

Firefly1987 · 08/05/2026 19:42

But...so what? 🤷‍♀️

Do you forensically examine all your clothes for traces of dirt ?

Unless you're wearing it in an operating theatre, it's clean enough.

So many posters on MN saying they would throw away items rather than clean them - even things like blankets and rugs.

Its really wasteful and un environmentally friendly. There's no need to treat everything as disposable.

Catandmousemam · 09/05/2026 18:49

I'm very much of the mindset & would NOT have had it in my washing machine either!!!!

CluckYeahCluck · 09/05/2026 19:05

Basically he's not good at cleaning stuff. You could educate him, if he'll let you. And point out how bad it could be for the machine, which is intended for normal domestic use - which would include removing heavy soiling first.

Bcmbc · 09/05/2026 19:09

If he's not done it to your exacting standards, do it yourself next time!

LubyLooTwo · 09/05/2026 20:12

Wow must have been difficult getting garden furniture in a washing machine!
