To think DH shouldn’t have washed this?

Power5 · 07/05/2026 13:13

We have garden furniture at the back of our garden with trees above , so over the winter it bears the brunt of the elements and is covered in bird crap etc.

DH has taken it off this morning and put it in the washing machine.

Is it me or is this really unhygienic given it’s covered in all sorts of crap?! He didn’t wash it down first .

I wash our covers in mine

QuietComet · 07/05/2026 22:04

When I was reading up about reusable nappies, I learned that washing machines are so efficient nowadays that you can put in shitty nappies and they will come out clean and the machine will be fine.
Washing machines are literally there to wash stuff.
If you're worried, whack the machine on a boil wash with machine cleaner after.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 07/05/2026 22:14

We (and by we I mostly mean DH as he does most of the washing) put cloth nappies for two kids through ours and it lasted well over ten years. If you’re worried put it on a hot wash cycle (which is actually a good idea to do once a month anyway).

On terms of the waterproofing, ideally you should wash it with a specific detergent designed for waterproof things but you can always reproof it.

Husband uses washing machine to wash something shocker !!🙄

What a bastard 🙂

Usernamenotav · 07/05/2026 22:20

The literally purpose of a washing machine is to wash things that are dirty. Do you wipe yourself down before you go in the shower?

Power5 · 07/05/2026 14:18

Urgh I hadn’t even thought of that. I’ll ask him when he’s off his call.

That’s why men should leave the washing to the ladies!!

Piss off

TheChosenTwo · 07/05/2026 22:22

Do you only wash clean things in your washing machine?
Do you eat dinner off the clothes you take out of your washing machine?
Why the huffing and puffing?

GingerdeadMan · 07/05/2026 22:23

This thread reminds me of my mum saying I shouldn't put the knife Id been using to cut up raw meat into a bowl full of hot soapy water in case it contaminated the other cutlery with germs.

No, the hot soapy water will kill them. That's the point! They aren't doing backstroke around the sink waiting for something new and exciting to latch on to.

I wouldn't like it with the warnings about wild birds and hygiene (bird flu etc.. ) would definitely put a boil wash on after ...yuck

Firefly1987 · 07/05/2026 22:50

I would hate this. Washing machines get things clean yes but they're not magic. I think people put too much faith in them sometimes.

Do you know what washing machines are for?

LaburnumAnagyroides · 07/05/2026 23:26

We wouldn't have left covers on the furniture outdoors all winter in the first place. When I say we, I mean husband wouldn't have. He is the efficient and organised one who winterises things. I would just be running the machine on a hot wash after. Sorry, another correction, he would. Like he did last weekend after he had washed a pile of dustsheets that I needed for my mum’s house.

Yeah, my DH washes and stores all the winter stuff for our garden.

You’re upset that he washed something in a washing machine????? Clue’s in the name…..

Power5 · 07/05/2026 14:30

Are you a bit dim? Both of us are at home today, I’ve not said otherwise…

Reads like you are a bit dim tbh … washing left to the ladies is very sexist .., and all you have to do is stick your machine in an empty hot wash with some cleaner. Maybe you need to find yourself a job if this is such a drama for you!!!

ClassicalQueen · 08/05/2026 06:33

That’s what the washing machine is for. If you’re concerned run it on a 90 degree service wash before you wash anything else.

CupcakeDreams · 08/05/2026 06:35

I know you say that women should be left to the washing and I have no thoughts on that one way or another, if that's what you believe, you're entitled to your belief.

But, with respect, it seems your husband knows how to use the washer better than you do since he put a dirty item into a washing machine...to be washed...

...or did I miss something.

Power5 · 07/05/2026 14:46

I’ll need to check. Unsurprisingly, buying furniture covers isn’t really my thing!

That's right because you're a woman who is only capable of washing, ironing and child rearing 🙄

I have bought both the furniture covers we have had on this set, because I'm an adult

No, it's why everyone including men should inform themselves!

Upsetbetty · 08/05/2026 07:52

Why did you not store the cushions inside over the winter?! That’s what normal people do!!

Seriously? This is a joke post, isn't it?

You ignore all the replies about washing machines being invented to wash things and only bother with the post that potentially puts your husband in the wrong.

'Ladies' should do the washing? 🤮 Get a cover for your furniture if you're so precious.
