To think DH shouldn’t have washed this?

We have garden furniture at the back of our garden with trees above , so over the winter it bears the brunt of the elements and is covered in bird crap etc.

DH has taken it off this morning and put it in the washing machine.

Is it me or is this really unhygienic given it’s covered in all sorts of crap?! He didn’t wash it down first .

Urgh I hadn’t even thought of that. I’ll ask him when he’s off his call.

That’s why men should leave the washing to the ladies!!

Oh dear Lord...

Also it’s funny how despite the multiple posts telling you it’s fine, you’ve only taken note of the one poster who said the material might have shrunk, so now you’ve got another excuse to phone up and give him a bollocking. Why not just wait until you’re home and have a little look instead of looking for another excuse to be a twat?

Are you a bit dim? Both of us are at home today, I’ve not said otherwise…

You can buy reproofing solution - you stick the cover in the (wait for it) washing machine and then wash it with the solution. Comes out with a waterproof layer as before. So not the end of the world if he's washed a waxed cotton cover.

catipuss · 07/05/2026 14:31

OK as long as he didn't put your best lingerie in with it! I would have hosed it off first though, leaves and twigs and bits will get stuck in the drum, get him to clean the filter, check the drum for debris and do a hot rinse so nothing gets onto the next wash.

Fuck off

Peonies12 · 07/05/2026 14:39

Can't see any issue? I wash dirty nappies in my machine every other day, that's no different.

Muffinmam · 07/05/2026 14:40

Put it on the hottest cycle with a couple of dishwasher tablets. It will Sterilise the machine.

I’ll need to check. Unsurprisingly, buying furniture covers isn’t really my thing!

Honestly it is fine, I wash my "sponge down" waterproof garden covers all the time. If you think they are too dirty for the machine, how would sponging them down be enough? Its basically risk putting through the wash or replace. If you are worried do a drum clean after but I probably would bother TBH

lifeisgoodrightnow · 07/05/2026 15:03

checks notes yes it seems I can file this in ‘someone needs to get out more’.

baguettefan · 07/05/2026 15:08

DH is a farmer. Not once have I ever had any concern about washing his garments which are frequently covered in many things more disgusting and hazardous than a bit of bird poo. Are you actually serious?!

Speechless. So many women make martyrs of themselves. So many people then wonder why we get weaponised incompetence. Not really surprising when people write things like this.

Back to the problem - if you are worried then just put the washing machine on an empty hot wash afterwards. But cleaning dirty fabric is literally what it was designed for.

Rude.

You’re very unreasonable for your sexist comments.

TeaPot496 · 07/05/2026 15:33

Did you put a high loop in OP? When you plumbed the drainage from the washing machine? (or is that a man's job? 🙄)

If so the shit will be washed away, no bother, no issue.

I’d be grateful if my husband knew where the washing machine was…

Just point to it if he’s missed where it is.
