AIBU - Matcha is disgusting

Matcha tastes like rubbish and I do not understand why people pretend to like the taste of this green bile.

I have tried it cold with various types of "milk" and even real milk, added ice and flavoured and plain syrups.

Despite all the effort and promises of enjoyment, this "drink" makes me feel like I spent good money on off cuts of grass from the neighbours garden recycling.

Currently, Starbucks offers this amazing blend for £7.50, for a grande, because it's full of "protein" 🤔

I have also tried to wear leggings and update my Botox, but the disgusting taste remains.

YABU - add eco friendly things (like crickets) or add alcohol and try again
YANBU - people drink grass because it's trendy and they like to waste money

We tried some matcha sweets a few years ago in Japan before it became massive here ( uk) I was excited to try it but it tasted like glutionous grass. Dhs face a picture when he bit into one. The box went in the bin!

Avocado on its own is disgusting, but mashed up with lime juice, chili flakes, and seat salt, and spread on toast, it's one of my favourite things.

Horses for courses, I love an unadorned avocado.

I reckon someone needs to start a thread about okra.

That'll get 'em going.

I’ll self-appoint myself as a superior beverage consumer 😊 as I don’t take sugar (or milk) in tea or coffee 😁

Haha ok chief superior beverage drinker 😂

Well tbf I don’t usually add sweetener in my beverages either and normally have my coffee black.

I do have a sweet tooth but that comes out more in my love of fruit or cakes 😆 I feel coffee/tea/matcha etc already has a strong enough flavour for me

I can have it with or without honey, recently I’ve had it without honey (or any other sweetener) but I don’t really agree if you need sweetener in it that means you don’t like it.

Or if so by that token MANY people don’t really like “regular” tea or coffee since they take it with sugar.

A tiny bit of sweetener is fine but try the Starbucks drink- it literally tastes of sugar with barely a twang of matcha. No one who drinks that really likes matcha- they just like a sugary, milky drink. I tried one sip and that was enough- my teeth were crying!!!

Me too. I can never turn down cake 😁

TBF you could say the same for most Starbucks drinks - the sugar and syrup hides the taste of coffee as well.

I find matcha tastes too much like grass for me (and, yes, I have tried the good stuff made properly). I’m not a big fan of green tea either, though, and didn’t like wheatgrass when that was a thing a few years back, so it’s obviously just that taste for me.

I do wonder if it would be as popular if if wasn’t so vibrantly coloured.

Occasionalsnaccident · 06/05/2026 18:10

For me it’s a healthy alternative to coffee rather than something I enjoy drinking. Mine also tastes a bit fishy because it has added marine collagen 🤢 you do get used to it eventually

ringoutsolsticebells · 06/05/2026 18:35

I have had the dubious pleasure of consuming matcha tea prepared by a Geiko in Kyoto. I can confirm that it is bitter and horrible. Even the Japanese seem to think so as it was accompanied by sweet treats to make it more palatable

I’ve only had matcha in UK coffee shops a couple of times. Can’t quite recall if it was Starbucks specifically but I didn’t like it so don’t order it at all now when I’m out!

Someone upthread said it’s made with some kind of liquid matcha whereas without sounding like a matcha snob I use the ceremonial grade matcha powder found in East Asian stores 😆

Not surprised to hear it’s super sugary, Starbucks is like that - not for me!

catmum44 · 07/05/2026 09:25

Yup. It's awful.
Filed away alongside goji berries.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 07/05/2026 09:29

Ugh goji berries, they used to be all over the place! Hideous little gits.

Cfcbaz · 08/05/2026 23:21

Matcha never appealed to me since its been "in fashion" but the other week I finally decided to try my friends. It was with coconut milk and sugar free vanilla syrup and I loved it. It is now my daily afternoon treat, replacing the coffee milkshake I used to get from the coffee shop.

See also Kambucha 🤢

I raise you with camomile tea 😬

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/05/2026 08:33

Isn't matcha just powdered green tea? I drink a lot of green tea, usally with lemon or ginger.

Takoneko · 10/05/2026 08:54

@Ginmonkeyagain Matcha is a kind of powdered green tea. It’s not the only kind.
Konacha or agari (which is what you often get at sushi bars) is also a powdered green tea, but quite different.

chocolateaddictions · 10/05/2026 10:06

It is disgusting. Everyone at work is obsessed with it.

ThatWhiteElephant · 10/05/2026 11:33

I really like matcha. I prefer it plain. Yes it tastes grassy / earthy, but I also like celery juice and beetroot juice. Hate coriander though!

Don’t wear leggings and have never had Botox.

MasterBeth · 10/05/2026 11:37

It's not disgusting.

You just don't like it.

Your taste does not define objective truth.

It's OK that we like different things.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 10/05/2026 12:28

I had my authentic matcha at Matchado in Chiswick. Just googled other places and there’s loads in Birmingham for some reason.

I don’t mind that for certain situations. If my stomach is feeling a bit 🤢 or I’ve over indulged I find camomile tea can calm it.

Funnily enough someone just asked me if I use Botox (I don’t!).

Apparently it was because they reckoned my skin/face looked over a decade younger than my actual age.

I told them it must be all the matcha I drink 🤪
