AIBU - Matcha is disgusting

PennyThought · 06/05/2026 06:50

Matcha tastes like rubbish and I do not understand why people pretend to like the taste of this green bile.

I have tried it cold with various types of "milk" and even real milk, added ice and flavoured and plain syrups.

Despite all the effort and promises of enjoyment, this "drink" makes me feel like I spent good money on off cuts of grass from the neighbours garden recycling.

Currently, Starbucks offers this amazing blend for £7.50, for a grande, because it's full of "protein" 🤔

I have also tried to wear leggings and update my Botox, but the disgusting taste remains.

YABU - add eco friendly things (like crickets) or add alcohol and try again
YANBU - people drink grass because it's trendy and they like to waste money

Why do you assume people pretend to like it rather than just acknowledging people like different things?

What are your thoughts on other types of green tea?

I like good quality matcha, wouldn’t bother getting it in Starbucks, Costa etc.

Hostile17Lover · 06/05/2026 15:21

It's so funny to me that so many people find matcha disgusting when matcha tastes lovely and fresh to me, while regular black tea tastes like the dried-up, mummified old corpse of matcha to me. Taste buds, eh?

DeftGoldHedgehog · 06/05/2026 15:23

It's just green tea isn't it? I barely like normal black tea with milk and really don't appreciate matcha flavour being added to things like cake and chocolate. There aren't many things I don't care for generally but this is one of them, YANBU. However, mostly I manage to avoid it!

Yes, it's just green tea, but it's powdered so that you consume the whole leaf instead of just steeping it.

Avocado on its own is disgusting, but mashed up with lime juice, chili flakes, and seat salt, and spread on toast, it's one of my favourite things.

It's funny how tea sometimes tastes/smells of fish. All tea,not just matcha, but only sometimes. Very odd. Feels like some sort of glitch in the Matrix.

Decaffinated tea totally tastes/smells of fish - the PG tips one for example. I used to drink decaff tea, but after DH pointed this out to me I could not unsmell/untaste it and had to go back to lovely delicious normal tea.

LakeGeneva1 · 06/05/2026 15:44

It makes me nauseous. All green tea does.

beencaughttrollin · 06/05/2026 15:45

I like matcha made at home with pure matcha powder, frothed almond milk, and honey or agave. For the most pleasant taste, you do need a plant-based milk IMO, and most people will want quite a bit of sweetener.

Currently, Starbucks offers this amazing blend for £7.50, for a grande, because it's full of "protein" 🤔

Not familiar with the specific Starbucks product, but matcha itself only has a trace amounts of protein.

I have also tried to wear leggings and update my Botox, but the disgusting taste remains.

It would be more logical (and less performative) to just stop drinking the drink that you've repeatedly tried in different formulations and still fundamentally dislike.

AIBU fail; you have to give people a binary choice. This feels like you've taken those mind-2010s over the top cringey advertising ploys ([ ] Yes! How about you all get a sense of humour? You're making yourself look really silly by taking this thread so seriously and trying to school adults on things as basic as "differing opinions exist".

lololol

@beencaughttrollin @Hostile17Lover @VegQueen

The post isn't that deep! Loosen up a little and try commenting, in the spirit of fun, with your beloved matcha!

Didn’t see much fun in the posts I replied to tbh. Just people thinking anyone who likes something they don’t is a poser.

I don’t think I was trying to school anyone either. If you think posts are silly or humorous then you must be easily pleased!

The specific pots I replied to were not fun, they weee stereotyping people who like a certain thing.

if you think the posts are funny then you don’t have much of a sense of humour yourself - they’re just basic.

That any clearer?

WorstPaceScenario · 06/05/2026 16:17

Matcha tastes like a slide tackle. YANBU

BananaPeels · 06/05/2026 16:17

It is horrible. People say they like it but then you find out the drink is almost 100 sugar to disguise the taste of the matcha!

if you have sugar in your matcha then you don’t really like matcha!

I don’t know about OP but that’s as clear as mud to me. Or as clear as a cup of Matcha.

Not really but I do hope you are in the position to enjoy your drink of preference! Feel free to share whatever that is!

Yes, oat milk for the win 😍 never made it with cows milk actually since I don’t buy that at all.

Protein matcha doesn’t particularly appeal to me lol but I know many people that are very into getting their protein intake nowadays! Especially those who are into the gym.

My local gym had a vending machine full of protein chocolate bars - very calorific and sugary but branded as healthy ‘cos protein. Lol

So I guess it’ll be popular.

Not possible on MN. Never seen a lighthearted thread yet that doesn’t get infiltrated by the po faced. 😁

Have a good laugh at? Or in fact, try to calmly talk about the differences in something I'm interested in, a product I feel isn't represented in it's best light in the UK?

When I said very funny, I mean it's funny that loads of people form an opinion based on a version of the drink (which isn't often the nicest it could be, when made in the UK,), not "haha look at dumb people hating matcha", which is what I'm presuming you think I mean.

Enjoy my superiority? Or merely talk about my preference and experience, which don't align with yours? That isn't worthy of getting offended over, I bet there are lots of differences between you and I, but we are both ok to love or hate matcha, and to talk about it on a thread about matcha in the UK.

"It's very funny to me to see British people freaking out about matcha". They were literally your words. Characterising a whole nation as 'freaking out' and finding it amusing is not calmly talking about differences - maybe you also think we are stupid.

I can have it with or without honey, recently I’ve had it without honey (or any other sweetener) but I don’t really agree if you need sweetener in it that means you don’t like it.

Or if so by that token MANY people don’t really like “regular” tea or coffee since they take it with sugar.

Yes, this. I've enjoyed the thread, @PennyThought. For those that don't like it, I'd suggest cooling your ire down from boiling point to 80 degrees or less before reading. It's excessive heat that brings out the bitterness.Wink

Alternatively you could try taking the thread with a pinch of salt. Or coconut sugar, or something

I notice all the time on Mumsnet that a worrying number of people cannot imagine an experience different to their own being real or true in any way!

Yeah it’s a lack of imagination.

I don’t know many people like that in real life thankfully.

I would find it so weird if a friend insisted I didn’t like X because they have “tried it many times” and “know” its “disgusting”. 😆

I’ll self-appoint myself as a superior beverage consumer 😊 as I don’t take sugar (or milk) in tea or coffee 😁
