AIBU - Matcha is disgusting

PennyThought · 06/05/2026 06:50

Matcha tastes like rubbish and I do not understand why people pretend to like the taste of this green bile.

I have tried it cold with various types of "milk" and even real milk, added ice and flavoured and plain syrups.

Despite all the effort and promises of enjoyment, this "drink" makes me feel like I spent good money on off cuts of grass from the neighbours garden recycling.

Currently, Starbucks offers this amazing blend for £7.50, for a grande, because it's full of "protein" 🤔

I have also tried to wear leggings and update my Botox, but the disgusting taste remains.

YABU - add eco friendly things (like crickets) or add alcohol and try again
YANBU - people drink grass because it's trendy and they like to waste money

I’m getting the impression Matcha drinkers are quite serious people.

😆

ha - references a thread recently that said all school mums wear leggings, have botox and drink matcha 😉

This made me laugh! I wear Gymshark leggings and get Botox but can’t stand matcha. I have tried so hard to like it but it’s awful

PinkPonyAnonymous · 06/05/2026 08:49

I like good matcha. It should taste a little bitter, but kind of smooth bitter. The big chains (blank street, Starbucks, Costa etc) are not using matcha powder they are using a pre-made liquid that tastes grassy and weak. When I’ve tried their stuff it inevitable tastes like the milk/syrup with a hint of grass.

The syrups and milks should complement, not disguise, the taste. Good matcha is delicious on its own and takes a few minutes to make. If they are handing it to you like a production line, it’s going to be crap.

Nice. I did not know this existed!

They do lots of flavours, like birthday cake and salted caramel and they’re all really good!

So they’re using a liquid really? maybe that’s why I don’t like it in coffee shops but l like the one I make at home.

Saves me money anyway as I don’t like to buy hot drinks when I’m out most days!

GrandmasCat · 06/05/2026 08:54

I think it is a bit like gin, everybody making a fuss of it when it tastes like shit.

eh?

I like your style and know the thread you're referring to.🤣
Ah but what about you're eye lashes.

MiddleAgedDread · 06/05/2026 08:55

i can't even bring myself to try it, something about the look of it just makes me feel ill.

Yes, I have a dairy intolerance so I always watch them making my drink like a hawk (I’m sure they hate me!) They just have a pre-made bottle of green liquid that they pour out a shot of.

I did not know matcha could come in faux liquid form. This thread has been educational!

Couldn't agree more, that stuff is nasty.
Can't avoid it I am afraid as Japan and Korea is the trend of the moment.
Can say I am sorry to see pistachios going tho, ube seems to be the new one🤔.

I wonder it matcha will turn out to be like coriander where people have completely experiences when tasting it. To me it’s a bit grassy but it doesn’t prompt anything like a sense of disgust when I drink it. Diluted in milk it’s barely even there as a flavour.

This. It just tastes like nothing. Worse than water.

yeah I watch like a hawk too 😂dairy intolerance is another reason I prefer to make my matcha or any other drinks at home rather than coffee shops!

ButterYellowFlowers · 06/05/2026 09:19

It’s a specific flavour… just like some people don’t like aniseed, tea or beer not everyone likes matcha. I don’t buy it because it’s too expensive but I enjoyed it in Japan with red bean sweets (also an acquired taste).

And before that it was prosecco. The next thing will be along soon. And it will be all over tiktok with creators saying its the best thing ever. And people like op will try desperately to like it so that they can make it their whole personality

I am desperately trying to like it and make it my personality?

The whole thread is about how I hate it!

Reading comprehension is a thing.

Have a rethink about your username. You're clearly not alright. 😄

Edited

So why do you keep repeatedly trying it in different ways to try and like it. You don't like matcha and thats ok. Just drink what you like not what others like

I can never understand the love for gin, it tastes of depression. The fancy fruity ones are disgusting too.

Yep this. It’s not rocket science.

I hated licorice and Dr Pepper growing up - and still do - but didn’t question my neighbour who was obsessed with both.

I just got an email this morning from a bakery that does huge slabs of cake and it reminded me they did a matcha cake the other week and I ordered it and ate the whole huge slice. Delicious 😋 and the beauty of it is those who didn’t like matcha could order other flavours of cake 😄

Topseyt123 · 06/05/2026 09:35

It's utterly horrendous.

I tried it once when out for a coffee. Never again, and nobody needs to bother telling me I was doing it wrong. It's horrendous stuff.

Newmeagain · 06/05/2026 09:41

Everyone likes different things. There are lots of flavours and textures I really like that other people do not and vice versa.

btw, good matcha is supposed to have a grassy flavour because it is tea that is not fermented like black tea - so it has the real taste of fresh tea leaves.

MyThreeWords · 06/05/2026 09:45

PennyThought · 06/05/2026 08:15

I tried different versions of it because everyone has an opinion on how to make it "better".

Surely you read that part?

Yes, agree. Also, like lots of things it is an acquired taste; and since it is so healthy and lovely it is a taste worth acquiring.

I'm guessing that even ordinary tea is an acquired taste for most people. I know that in childhood I thought it was disgusting and didn't understand why adults drank it. Likewise, coffee , whisky, beer, wine, etc.

We deliberately acquire certain tastes because it gives us a new source of pleasure -- usually a more complex and enjoyable pleasure than the easiest flavours give us. And in this case (unlike alcohol) it is also good for us

Best way to speed up the acquisition of a taste for matcha is to drink it when your body is VERY low on caffeine. Then your body will trick you into thinking it is delicious just because it is giving you a hit.

Newmeagain · 06/05/2026 09:46

Have a think about a lot of the foods that we grow up with. There are many that we would not like if we tried them for the first time as an adult. Cheese is a really good example. Most of us love cheese - but it is basically curdled milk that sits around and goes off even more, often developing a strong off taste as a result!
